I actually thought this thread took a turn for the better, with the random chat about pizza and nomcats. lol The problem with this topic, is not only was it superficial, it's very narrow minded and stereotypical. A metal dude is hardly anymore likely to go for a "fat chick" than any other type of guy. The premise of the thread was iffy right from the start....

haha, that's totally wrong... I've lived in asia for 17 years. Seen so many fat asian girls, but admittedly the US population is generally fatter though

@ Ag Fox: is the UK similar the the US (weight wise)? as i recall there has been a controversy over a beauty queen who was size 16 ,, was that because there are no more good looking skinny chicks so they had to pick a good looking one among the fat ones? or they thought her beauty matched the skinny ones that's why they had her in the competition? ...she lost though

Such generalised annecdotes...'I've lived in Asia for X amount of years' equates to 'Therefore, because I've seen some 'fat chicks' there must be loads of them'

And 'Asian girls are generally thinner' what a load of nonsense...basing these statements on what you've seen in Anime, film or television isn't giving anyone a good picture of anything -_-

Perseonaly I never ever have seen fat asian girl and man, they are here many in Swe and all are slimm, ok Iranians, and persians they are asians to but I talk about yellow people taw, chinese, japanese, koreans etc...

Fat yellow people are be seen as big (a bit grease or little slightly overweight) people of Western. Very so grease and extremely overweight are considered as fat in Western. It always depends on the culutre stance, but there are some real fat asians as equated to real fat white/black.

Anyway, I think Miss Surrey just is fat on the lower, upper not.

to be honest I am not entirely sure. Just basing it from the couples (sample size around 100 pairs) I've met during my travels to Mexico this summer, they seem considerably fatter. My landlord did complain that food in US is a bit too sugery though, so I think diet habits certainly play a role.

I've lived in Asia for definitely more years than you and have travelled to at least 7 other countries in the region, so I believe what I've seen is a bit more accurate than most guess work around here. Perhaps you misunderstood me because of my poor abilities in expressing myself in a clear a succinct manner in the English language, but I was merely try to point out that there are fat people everywhere, including Asia, though probably not as much as the Wester countries such as the US.

There are many factors that leads to this phenomenon and genetics certainly has a role (the A2BP1 gene is among one of them that I can recall on top of my head), but also plenty of socio economic factors like whether the people actually have enough to eat in the first place.

One last point, I did not mention the word TV, anime or movie in my previous post

Yes, you undoubtedly have spent a lot more time in Asia than me [perhaps because I've never been to an Asian country :p] but unfortunately, something like proportionate weights among Asian girls and western girls is kinda ridiculous to generalise.

Why? Well...the 'west' has a far greater population than Asia [USA and Russia alone would account for half the populace, if not more surely], so I think by sheer size in population, the West logically have larger girls than Asia does lol.

NOT because it's Asia and they have some standard of living that helps then maintain slimness whereas in the west we don't. Weight gain, in almost all scenarios, is something the individual takes upon themselves. If one spends all their time in McDonalds and does no exercise and put on a lot of weight, I don't wanna hear no bs about genetics, and their 'predisposition' to put on weight.

The US population is about twice as big as the Russian population. (and combining both of them do not even account for a sixth of the world population)

Furthermore, I think you misunderstood my points about quality of life and genetics. Firstly, I'm well aware that the 'average Chinese farmer' [because the whole of China is in primary sector employment, right??] is more likely to have a healthier diet therefore be thinner than the 'average American' who spends his time in McDonalds [because all Americans spend their lives in Mcdonald's, right???]. You're right: it's common sense

Secondly, my point about genetics, in conjunction with the research undertaken into the A2BP1 gene (wuzzah, someone else who 'knows his stuff'] isn't entirely wrong...yet. All this research has 'proven' is that there is a gene that can influence obesity. There is no causal factor in this gene that suddely makes people put on the pounds. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the methodology and design of the experiment was a bit dodgy, there was no real conclusion as to whether the people WITH the gene actually were obese, as I recall, there was no single variant reproducibly associated with obesity.

All of that aside....[this is getting boring] the bottom line is: you can't generalise an entire CONTINENT [especially Asia ] on the basis of a few observations, why? SAMPLING ERROR my friend!

I know I am generalising a bit too much, but when we talk about east and west these days, it's either about US or China, the two behemoths of a nation and economic power, though I am pretty certain that the Asia probably has a greater population than North American content and Wester Europe combined.

Not sure whether you guys know, but back in the days of emperors in China, fat woman were considered as beautiful and highly sought after as it symbolises fertility. One has to be rich enough to be well fed and can produce enough milk for their child for healthy growth.

I don't claim to know much, I only remember one, but there are others (and I'm sure many more that have yet to be discovered) okay? Regardless, the study never said it's because of one gene that's why people are fat. Hence I said there are socio economic factors that come into play as well. Sometimes it could be as simple as eating habits, but it could be stress that induces certain genetic mechanisms to get activated or other unpredictable events which I won't delve into.

Anyway, I think you have misinterpreted the results of the paper. They didn't say people with the gene would just be obese. In fact, many people have that gene, but variations in a particular section of the gene plays a role in affecting obesity given the "right" conditions
