I saw that new Star Track film. The Farce Awakens or something. Was ok. At least people weren't jumping and flipping all over the screen throwing laser swords at each other.

^Ha! What a coincidence. I saw the Star Wars yesterday too. First stars wars movie I ever watched.

Honestly it was a lot better than I antecipated. I just didn't get much who was son/daughter of who until the very end because I lacked background but it's ok.
Apart from that it's a predictable story with very good effects, typical movie to see in the cinema, you go see, "wow, look at those graphics and effects!!1" and then go away and forget the entire plot before reaching the car in the parking.

Star Wars would have been a lot better if it had better baddies. Unfortunately they were all a bit rubbish. Hopefully they improve / we get better ones in future iterations. I think it's safe to say it'll move away from the reliance on A New Hope's story derivations on the next ones, and it's already established a strong cast of goodies, so I have some hope.

Saw It Follows last night. It lacked a little in plot I thought (I can't say I really subscribe to the symbolism some other people do) but it more than made up for it with acting, atmosphere, cinematography, music etc. doesn't feel like it only cost 2 million dollars to make.

Currently watching The Martian. Seems decent so far.

I didn't see it yesterday though, somewhere last week. Or the week before. Who remembers. Anyways, I can't imagine watching this movie without watching the original Star Wars films. It must be confusing. But yeah, pretty good popcorn movie indeed.

I'm the opposite, I thought whatshisface with the mask was the best part of the movie. My main problems were that it borrowed a little too much from the original trilogy and that the main character was a Mary Sue. Still, it's a competent movie and as long as they don't go Empire Strikes Back 2 with the sequel(s) I'm hopeful for the future.

I agree with everything you said about It Follows though. The Martian was decent but didn't make me feel anything.

I can agree that was she a bit too über, especially regarding her powers and the fact she had no Jedi training, but the Rey and Finn interplay was probably the highlight of the film.

Kylo Ren was just flat out awful I thought, possibly the worst Star Wars baddie. I'm all for emotively driven characters but having someone with the emotional maturity of a 10 year old, as what, second in command of The New Order or whatever they were called made zero sense to me. They could have done so much more with him. I was hoping to see more of the badass female stormtrooper who I think might give the baddies some depth and cool in future films. I don't think Mr hologram terrible CGI monster face Snoke is going to be particularly interesting somehow.

I don't think he was second in command. I'm pretty sure he didn't have much in the way of a status and he definitely wasn't respected by everyone else in the Order. I assumed he was just there because he's CGI Snookie's apprentice and because the Order begrudgingly took him aboard because he could be useful. If he was second in command I'm pretty sure he would have used his lightclaymore on the stormtroopers and not on the ship's machinery. (correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, I'm really not sure, but that's how I remember it)

I'd also argue he was a far more interesting villain than Vader in A New Hope. Vader was just a bad guy, Ren was conflicted and a bit loco. They could have done (a LOT) more with him for sure, but I'll take a character that isn't sure about whether what he's doing is what he really wants to do, a kid that wants to seem like a badass by wearing a mask, but who really isn't all that intimidating if you look closer, over Mr. I'm-here-to-chew-bubble-gum-and-force-choke-the-living-shit-out-of-everyone-because-I'm-the-villain.

Also, I don't see how that female stormtrooper would have added more depth to the bad guys. She looked kinda cool I guess, but it's not like she was an interesting character. But you're right about CGI SNookie, he didn't intrigue me in the slightest.

The interplay between Rey and Finn was great though, I'll give you that. Just a shame that Rey wasn't challenged at any point while Finn was.

Took it from the wikia page:

Quote:
The First Order was a military junta inspired by the former Galactic Empire.[1][9] Led by dark side user Supreme Leader Snoke, he and his right-hand man Kylo Ren would oversee the colonization of the Unknown Regions and destruction of the last Jedi. Much like the former Empire, Kylo Ren existed outside the formal command structure of the First Order, and frequently came into conflict with military officials owing to his agenda consistantly trumping military objectives.

So yeah, officially he had no control or power over the military, but for all intents and purposes he did what he liked with impunity. The fact he's Snoke's apprentice for me suggests he has more power than anyone other than Snoke. At best there was very lukewarm interplay between him and Domhnall Gleeson's character (probably the most cringeworthy character in the film) which I guess is a sort of parallel between Vader and Tarkin (only 10 times less cool). I can't say I found Kylo Ren interesting at all. He went from ostentatious power displays to emotional stomping around to getting his ass kicked in the space of the film (spoilers I guess). I can't say I remember how I felt with Vader originally but he had a ton more mystery surrounding him which made him far more intriguing and allowed his character to played out perfectly throughout the trilogy as more was revealed.

I think that's why I liked the idea of the female stormtrooper, because her load wasn't blown in the first part of the trilogy and it means some decent characterisation can occur. Basically she was cool, like Kylo Ren wasn't.

Well yeah, then the power he has comes from being Snookie's apprentice, so it makes sense to me. Snookie wants to train and manipulate Ren into becoming the new Satan or whatever and puts him in power even though no one in the Order likes him. Makes sense to me.
Worst Star Wars baddie? Man, did you forget about that robot lizard with the four lightsabers? Or spineless CGI Christopher Lee? Or are we just forgetting the prequels in this discussion?

As far as Vader goes, he did indeed get more interesting throughout the trilogy and I'm not saying he was poorly written in the first film, but he wasn't anything more than a bad guy initially. Sure, he had a little mystery surrounding him, that's nice, but I doubt he would be seen as one of cinema's greatest, most iconic villains if Star Wars never got a sequel. But that's pointless speculation.

And yeah, I didn't like Gleeson's character either. Again, too many parallels with A New Hope. And the female stormtrooper, I don't know, I don't think she will be much more than this trilogy's Boba Fett.

*SPOILERS* And the asskicking that Ren received was bizarre not just from Ren's perspective. Which is also why I thought the first half of the film was far better than the second. The ending got a bit stupid and the subplot of another Death Star was eye-roll-inducing. *SPOILERS*

I personally wouldn't put any confidence in someone as unstable as Ren. I don't really know what Abbrams has in mind for the next films (obviously) but I can't fathom what possible use an unstable entity like him could be to someone like Snoke, considering Jedis had basically become mythical at that point and the fact he has a sizeable army with few threats. I certainly wouldn't send my underdeveloped / overly emotional apprentice to hunt down the Jedi that beat (and turned) Darth Vader, and who is ostensibly one of the most power Jedis there ever was. I probably would have stuck to the baton wielding stormtroopers or some other ace in the whole (like a big planet lazer) and chucked Kylo Ren out of an airlock as soon as he'd served his usefulness and become too powerful. It's hard to accept and like a baddie when his existence and status is a bit of a plot hole to begin with, and because he's so openly emotional you can't even rely on dramatic irony on his case. Any old supreme leader would see that he's a serious liability.

Grievous? He was ridiculous, but he was probably one of the most fun parts of the se/prequels I thought. A multi-lightsaber-wielding non-Jedi cyborg thing with bronchitis? It's so ridiculous that it (almost) works. After all, it's a space opera, not hard sci-fi. A Star Wars film without a cool villain isn't really much of a Star Wars film at all and I think that means relying on certain tropes to an extent. Can't really speak much to Lee's character. He wasn't much more than a plot device for Anakin. But it was Christopher Lee at least. The plot hardly revolved around those characters at any rate so I don't think there was much need to have them developed further. Grievous was originally made for The Clone Wars series as far as I know, so not created solely for the films.

On the whole I think they tried to do too much in the new Star Wars, cram too much in, which is probably why my memory of it is so sketchy.

The Lobster.

Been thinking about it a lot since last night. One of the best balances of surrealism, comedy (both satirical and physical) and intrigue I've ever seen. Genuinely laugh out loud funny, but also often unnerving and fascinating. Can't say I've ever been a fan of Colin Farrell (nothing against him either) but he was great in this. Totally against his usual character types (I guess).

Recommended to anyone who can make the slight transition needed to appreciate the tone and humour of the film, which I don't think is that difficult as it's not necessarily a hard film to watch or digest. Just a bit weird.

I'd post the trailer, but I don't think it really conveys the way people communicate with each other in the film, which is in and of itself rather strange.

Arise In Might!
Recently:

The Revenant - Thought it was a good film. It's certainly one of the best looking films I've seen in a while. I'd highly recommend the 2D IMAX version of it. A few problems though: the spiritual segments didn't really work. I also thought it was about 20 minutes too long. I'm someone who can sit through a 4 hour film without flinching, but I think this one dragged just a little. Could have removed some of the night shots, leading into a shot of the sun, then Leo being cold and then moving on with the film. Just nitpicking really though. I think Leo will probably get an Oscar, but I don't think he was as good as Tom Hardy in this.

Bridge of Spies - Enjoyable like most of Spielbergs films, but also had the same issues that I find with most of his movies. Happy endings, everything spelled out in an easy to digest manner, safe and lacking any real tension. Obviously not saying all his films are like that, but a lot of his modern ones really are. Still, it was a good watch.

He's never even been in the same league as Hardy as far as I'm concerned. The Revenant hasn't been released here yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.

Still, it was a good watch.

good film, based on real event ...
