There are still two bands I must have seen live before I die.. these are Children Of Bodom and of course Nightwish ..
I have never seen them, But I heard some good stories about COB. And I have the DVD's from Nightwish, so I know they are good live;).. Dont know if they are still as good as then with the new vocalist but we shall see...

The best live band for me is actually Guns and Roses I think, they do have a great performance with the whole band, And I love how Axl sings so full of energy on his age ^^

Apocalyptica, it isn't only listening to their music and watching them playing, but it is also feeling their music.

Nightwish are also amazing.

THERION! Why? Well, first of all it's my subjective look on it - it's one of my undisoputedly fave bands. Second of all, their performance is flawless, the guys are really amazing live and I love it that they have a small choir of opera singers along. IMO the best concert on the whole wide world would be Therion playing live with symphonic orchestra, that's the only minus actually - that they play orchestral parts on the matrix, but that's fairly excusable since the peparations would take forever and Therion couln't perform in smaller stages. But still, they rockzzzz my sockzzzz and I can't wait for January to see them again! AG! Oh yea, and they have a really nice and diverse setlist + if you want more, they give you more!!!

its next to impossible to widdle it down to one, but im going to have say devildriver, mostly in comparison to there studio stuff, i listened to devildriver on cd and thought they sucked, then i saw them opening for opeth and it was insane. shocked the shit out of me.

my candidate is totalt jävla mörker. a swedish band, not very famous... not famous at all actually... they supported the haunted at a concert some years ago in sweden. anyways, its actually not a very good band... to be sincere, i dont like their sound at all... but when they went up the stage and started playing, i couldnt stop myself from headbanging my ass off! they dont have any special effects of any kind, but they're so genuine in their playing... the atmosphere was great when they played.

Children of Bodom, Sepultura and In Flames are all poor compared to Iron Maiden, especialy their vocals. Fast solos cant outbalance fashioncore songwriting and stupid screaming.

Best live band I;ve seen so far is Therion, all amazing musicians with geat pressence,a nd the singers were perfect, the DVD doesnt compare at all. Most disapointing was Nightwish, mainly Tarja, she had become far too poppy and it sounded wrong and trying to play the orchestral parts of ghost love score with just a keyboard doesnt come out too well. That's only comapred to their studio stuff, the beauty of their music means that it was still a good gig even if not as great as I hoped. The worst band's I've seen are local emocore bands.

This year I'm seeing Amon Amarth, Blind Guardian, Opeth and Iron Maiden so the best band I've seen is likely to change.

From all bands I saw live on stage, there are 3 that really get me moving:

- In Flames because I just like their music a lot and they give an amazing live performance (if Anders is not drunk...)
- Soulfly because they just make the whole place go crazy. Last show on Graspop just kicked everyone in the face. It was like a freight train crushing the audience without any break. Incredible energy.
- After Forever: They just sound amazing. An incredible singer, very powerful songs and how they can sound heavy for a gothic metal band. I was just exhausted after their latest concert. I totally freaked out from beginning to end. Respect!!

I think the best live band is Metallica. It's amazing when they play the classic songs, it's just a complete different feelling.
Special mentions to: Megadeth, Pantera and Dream Theater.

I've heard that Megadeth is pretty weak live, is that true?

Well, I guess it depends what you look for in a live show. I loved the show they put on but I think that's because Megadeth was the first gig I went to so everything blew me away. Dave didn't talk much and crowd interaction was generally low but their set was over two hours and they played really loud and I loved it so, once again it depends on what you look for in a live gig.

@Revenant: Bodom, Sepultura and In Flames are far from 'fashioncore' and don't bash other people's opinions, especially since I KNOW you haven't seen any of those bands live for yourself (or Iron Maiden either!).

I was refiring to them on CD. no they're not fashioncore but they've all done something nu-ish at least in their careers. I like all three but find them overrated.

Well, i have 'some' age and this means i have seen quite some bands playing live in the old days up until recently.

Although in my expreience and taste the vast majority of the music is better on lp/cd, there are some bands that have impressed me also live.

The best live performance (= adding something to the studio album) that i have seen ever came from Stream of Passion, the sound and loudness, the musicianship, teamplay, the feeling. All were uplifted by tenfold compared to the album Embrace the Storm: fantastic!!!!!!!

The following bands are also very good live:
Dream Theater
Metallica
After Forever
Epica
Queensrÿche
Van Halen
Autumn
Evergrey
Iron maiden
Kiss
The Legions Of Hetheria
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Tool
Elis
Midnattsol
AC/DC
Steve Vai

I've only bothered with old Sepultura and I can understand In Flames. Well, I don't see how Bodom have done anything 'nu-ish'. Metalcore and industrial even are better bets. As for Sepultura, I wouldn't say their thrashy stuff is overrated. The Roots album influenced a lot of later thrash acts. And if you're saying they're not 'fashioncore' then why mention it in the first place only to admit they're not later?

But I don't see why you should be discussing their recorded efforts on a thread that is about live acts, unless you're comparing how they fare live to their studio releases or something similar, which you certainly were not.

Just to steer this post back on topic ~ Aeon are a great live band. Loud as hell! Probably the loudest band I've witnessed live (if not then loudest after Megadeth but I can't recall which was louder).

Form what i've seen:
Kreator - I really dislike thrash metal, but this band slays live ! Their live sound is more than amazing. They have convinced me on this year's Metalcamp!

Hypocrisy - Seen them twice now. Well i guess many of you won't agree with me about them being the best live band, it's true they always play too many slow songs, but still them make the show! And Peter's screams are even better live, he is the best screamer i've ever heard!

@Soulreaper: I agree with you about Hypocrisy!
I've saw them playing live only once, but that was the best time of my life! This was the best band I've seen live... the atmosphere they created with their songs, and people around me were like... just great, what can I say!
Apocalyptica kick ass too, as the same as Wintersun...
