The more I use social media sites ? Slashdot, Reddit, Facebook, MySpace, Digg and even newspapers with comments ? is that they do not encourage engagement.

In other words, they let us side-step the question of "is this a good idea?" on any item, and instead comment simply on what we think of it. We're not predicting cause and effect; we're judging parts of reality as to whether they fit our personal preference.

The problem with social media

While the above article brings up a good point, it misses the bigger point: social media is about wish fulfillment, and what people want to think about themselves, not things as they are.

If you want to think of yourself as enlightened and kind, vote down any aspects of reality that mean bad news for anyone, anywhere -- even if by doing so, you're endorsing a lie.

Then again, I wouldn't expect truthfulness from the intertard.

I feel like the more I study actual sciences, the more I learn to hate social media. I feel like we've gone so much backwards in social and cultural evolution since the social media companies took over. Not only are people generally very ignorant, but now we have the tools to efficiently spread all the old stereotypes and all kind of stupid shit, and people just eat it all up. All kinds of nut cases and plain losers have all the time in the world to tinker with this stuff, so if you ever feel like whole social media is full of unhinged people, then maybe it is.

Take this popular "self improvement" scene for example. While there may be few professional coaches and such, many of the so called "gurus" are just some random pundits talking like they know something important, when it's mostly just some losers glorifying and justifying their own insecurities and failures. Like there's this stupid push for selibacy, like you shouldn't date, have sex or watch any adult content. From a moral stand point I can understand it, and maybe you can save some money and time that way, but living like a monk simply won't make you an alpha tiger. Human interactions and modest sexuality are a very healthy and normal thing, not a disease.
