Extreme metal; for 8 years now. I know some of you have been listening to it alot longer than that, but I'm 24 so that's 1/3 of my life so far. I don't plan on stopping either!

I have been listening to 'traditional' metal since the 80s though, I grew up with it.

I started listening to Maiden in when 'Powerslave' came out in the early 80's. 'Glam metal' (Poison, Motley Crue) and G N'R in the late 80's progressing to Metallica, Megadeth and Pantera in the early 90's. Mid to late 90's saw my interests turn to Fear Factory and Machine Head.

25 years later and I still can't get enough metal. So many bands, so little time to enjoy.

Metal - close to 7 years. Extreme metal - close to 6 years. It's not much considering the fact that I'm 24. I've been very lost in my teen years ?

I've been listening to metal for 10 years. I started off with bands like Pantera and Metallica. Then I found Arch Enemy and fell in love with death metal.

I've been listening to it since the late 90's, but I also liked the nu bands which were popular around 2000 (Korn, Papa Roach...) and could not really be tagged as metal.
2002 (age 14) was the year I heared death and black metal for the first time. Since then 90% of the music I listen has been metal. All kinds of it.

I'm into metal since i'm six or seven, can't remember.
My father always listened to great progressive rock bands, such Emerson lake and palmer, pink floyd, king crimson, jethro tull, yes, rush, etc...
And my uncle was into van halen, kiss, bon jovi, guns n roses, queen, alan parsons project, led zeppelin, etc.
So i got a good ground.
I first got into Kiss, by the song "I love it loud", then i started to got into another bands, like iron maiden, black sabbath, deep purple, led zeppelin, van halen, and so on... Them moved to two distincted areas. extreme metal, with sepultura, sarcofago and obituary, and progressive rock and metal, wich such as rush, pink floyd, alan parsons, dream theater, symphoni x, savatage, and etc.
Well, since i'm 23 (About to go 24) years old, i can say i'm at least 16 or 17 years into metal.

I didn't really get into really big until the last two years, but that's due to my young age. I also never went through a nu-core phase; the first bands I got into were Metallica/Maiden/Megadeth, and I went from there into the thrash resurgence movement, into death metal death and black metal. Back when I was in middle school, I thought that classical music was the only style of music that dumbed down for mass consumption, until I started getting into underground metal. Of course now I realize plenty of other music not designed for commercial fame, but metal still reigns supreme over other music to my ears.

How old are you?
For the record, I'm 38.

By the way, I envy young people to discover metal now, with all the means we have to search for new albums. I think they can barely imagine the pain in the ass it was to be a metalhead in Canada, back in the 80s.
I don't regret anything and I know lots of young people would envy me for having been around in the 80s for other reasons. Still, I find you young ones lucky.

I'm only 16. Generally I don't tell my age on the internet, as plenty of older folks think that anybody young is automatically a moron, resulting in nobody taking anything I say seriously.

There's some pros to being a young metalhead. I don't have a job, so I can't make money to buy albums, but the internet has more then enough music until I get one. But the cons... I always worry that old school bands I like will break up or die before I see them. The death of Dio and Priest's farewell tour only reinforce that, not to mention Jeff Haneman's hand, which may prevent him from playing again. Luckily my parents let me see bands that come to my town for $20 bucks. But I don't think I'll ever see Priest... Furthermore, I think that metal is a dying genre, and by 2020 or so, most of the styles we listen to (thrash, death, black, power, trad, doom) will be dead, and be completely replaced by some nu-core nonsense, more-so then now.

I share this thought that metal is dying. Imo, it took the downward spiral around the millenia and it only got worse and worse. I have very negative feelings towards the current scene.
There's a lot of bands at the moment but most of them are only pale versions of better things that were done before. Also, I think it will be harder and harder to make enough money to be viable as a metal band. I think after the departure of the old bands, metal will die in the mainstrean spheres and will survive only in a more underground form. I think the scene will become much smaller and made almost exclusively of extreme metal bands.
If you want to have my opinion, I think traditional Heavy Metal will pretty much disappear entirely and Powermetal will die (in a sense, it is already dead, but this is another story).

However, I don't know about nu-metal and other modern crap replacing metal. I don't follow such genres at all, so it is hard for me to know about it.

But in other hand it also make me sad ....

It would make me sad if ìt wasn't for the fact that I'm almost exclusively into Black Metal nowadays and it is the genre less likely to be affected in a bad way, if events are to turn as we expect. It won't make a big difference for BM if the scene becomes smaller and more underground, as the genre is already underground to a certain extent and has never been a good money-maker (so bands won't quit for monetary reasons, most likely). It could even benefit from this situation.

I consider this less threatening than the over-commercialisation we sometimes saw in the last decade.

It is sad for those who are still deeply into traditional Heavy Metal, which is not my case. I still like to listen to a few old Heavy Metal songs from time to time but I stopped caring for new albums from old bands long ago because, imo, old bands release nothing but crap compared to their early material. I lost all interest in traditional Heavy Metal years ago. In the mid-90s, to tell the truth. Most bands were kinda dead at that time or so shitty it was pathetic, so I 'sailed to new horizons'. And I never jumped in the wagon when many bands made some kind of comeback. The page was already turned for me.

But, if I was still into traditional Heavy Metal, I would be very sad, since all the bands are old and will probably retire soon, and there is almost no new band to take the place.
As for Powermetal, sorry but I find the genre so shitty and such a joke since the millenia that I think it deserves to disappear. And, on this, I have no sympathy for Powermetal fans. They get what they deserve for encouraging bands to take a radio-friendly hard rock-ish direction. The good old melodic Speed Metal is already dead because of it.
