There used to be a similar topic in the old forum which I thought was really good. So many polls with different lists of bands are around these days and just wanted to make a topic which will encompass almost all bands. The idea is to list out the following:

1. Top three Black Metal bands

2. Top three Black Metal albums

3. Top three Black Metal songs

4. Top three Black Metal vocalists

5. Top three Black Metal guitarists

6. Top three Black Metal bands in terms of lyrics

7. Top three Black Metal drummers

If possible explain your choices and try to be original with your list. If someone else's list is pretty much what your's would be you may state that without actually spamming. I've kept it down to top three for a reason and that's to ensure that people don't go overboard with their posts. Hence please ensure that you follow the guidelines of the topic. Having said that, get posting all

Edit: changed the bassist section into Lyrics

1. Top three Black Metal bands

- Enslaved - I love their evolution and the fact they always were slightly out of step with the movement... I respect their blazing their own trail.

- Bathory - undeniable impact on the movement, cd's remain relevant and still hold up now.

- Darkthrone - Frankly, I like them as much for their last three albums as I do their first three bm releases. They've kept the fire burning.

(Of note - I also considered discography of extreme importance... just one strong release or two was not enough to trump a decades worth of work. Ulver is my favorite band to stem from black metal, but only had 2 bM releases - three if you count Kveldssagner.. Emperor and Immortal were knocking on the door.

2. Top three Black Metal albums

Ulver - "Bergtatt" - my favorite metal album ever. I love the evolution and mutation of the disc from a nice afternoon's leisurely walk through the woods into the raging chaos of a storm at night. Clean vocals sounds great, the shrieks fantastic... that thunderbolt in "Graablick Blev Hun Vaer" always catches me by surprise. I'm pleasantly surprised to see the album rated as high as it is.

Wolves in the Throne Room - "Diadem of 12 Stars" - I love the atmosphere of this album. The female voice is a nice touch to carry the Mother Earth theme while counterpointing the shrieked vocals. I find this in my player a lot.

Enslaved - "Monumension" - the most confusing of anything they've done. At times it's part black metal, at times you'd swear you were listening to a Pink Floyd album. This one took a while to grow on me... but has edged out "Mardraum", "Blodhemn" and "Below the Lights" as my favorite Enslaved album... and any one of the four would probably take this spot on any given day.

(Honorable mentions- Bathory "The Return" and "Blood, Fire, Death", Ulver's "Nattens Madrigal", Darkthrone "The Cult is Alive", Windir "Arntor", the aforementioned Enslaved albums, and Immortal's "Sons of Northern Darkness")

3. Top three Black Metal songs

Ulver - "Hymn I: The Wolf and Fear" off "Nattens Madrigal" - ripping fast, great intensity, (intentionally) piss poor production, nice acoustic break, and one simple riff I've always loved - the rhythm guitar's spacious riff that allows the melodic guitar line room to breath... around the 2:30 mark. Not sure why it stands out as much as it does, but it does.

Emperor - "Al Svatr/Ye Enctrancemperium" two songs married into one. I love the quiet way it opens, leading to the majestic trumpets before "Al Svatr" folds completely and gives into the chaos of "Ye Entrancemperium" - amusing note that my favorite Emperor riff was actually composed by Euronymous (that crushing opening riff of YE)... I also love the way the intensity of the song wanes and strengthens... and the keyboard bit that kicks in around the 4:40 mark.

Darkthrone - "Transylvanian Hunger" - I really love Zephyrous' guitar line. It's so sorrowful and is completely hummable. Good song which that riff catapults into "pantheon of all time favorites" status.

4. Top three Black Metal vocalists

Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg - Ulver, Arcturus, Borknagar, etc ... vicious shrieks, chanting, clean... can do it all, does it all well, and has ridiculous vision as an artist.

Ihsahn - Emperor - like the demonic shrieking, his clean voice is good at times, weak at times. Is perhaps strengthened by the fact is vocals are slightly buried within the mix on "Anthems" and "Nightside" - so his vocals are PART of the Emperor storm, rather than IN FRONT OF AND ON TOP OFF the music like seeming most bands do it.

Satyr - Satyricon - Not a big fan of their music. It's ok. Some songs are good, some songs are great from a muscial standpoint but somehow just seem clinical... lacking emotional oomph. Satyr's voice, however, I really enjoy. I particularly love the way you can hear the scorn when he 'sings.'

5. Top three Black Metal guitarists

Valfar - Windir - I've always loved his constructions. The guitar lines almost sing...

Zephyroud - Darkthrone - was the guitarist for what are considered their classic albums. While I like new Darkthrone about equally with their landmark early BM offerings, I prefer Zepyrous guitarwork.

Abbath - Immortal - I love the space he put in to Immortal upon taking over guitar duties. It allows his riffs to sound absolutely epic.

6. Top three Black Metal bassists

Hugh "Skoll" Steven James Mingay - Ulver - They actually have audible bass on their DM works. Barely, but it's there. And it's not just aping the guitar lines, either. I love how some of his loose playing seems to hold some of their tracks together at times... lots of space in between notes set against their buzzing guitar attack works nicely.

Vrangsinn - Carpathian Forest - just for being over 300 pounds and dancing around the stage in skimpy costumes.

Seriously, this is black metal - i don't even think most bands actually HAVE bassists...

7. Top three Black Metal drummers

Hellhammer - Mayhem, Arcturus, et all - wide range of work. Might not be the absolute fastest guy behind the kit, but he is very skilled. I love his work/sound in "Grand Declaration of War" - about the highpoint of that album.

Horgh - Immortal - love his work, compliments Abbath's riffs well.

Per Husebø (Dirge Rep) - Enslaved - drummed "Blodhemn" through "Below the Lights" - my favorite Enslaved albums... his work is a good part of why.

^^^ lol you really messed up that quote

I decided to include old Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate since they were part of the first wave of black metal. I prefer that style, but I guess they really aren't considered pure black metal nowadays. Celtic Frost used to be a black-ish thrash band and I guess Mercyful Fate is a black-ish heavy metal band.

1. Top Three Black Metal Bands (subject to occasional change):
Immortal - Abbath's voice isn't the greatest, their lyrics are atrocious, but every time I listen to their music I feel something really special, that only a select few bands can do.
Enslaved - I love everything about this band, especially the way they evolved from furious Black Metal into a more Progressive band, without a weak step along the way.
Drudkh - Atmosphere is the name of the game, and IMO no-one does it better than these Ukrainians.

2. Top Three Black Metal Albums (subject to occasional change):
Enslaved - Frost - This has it all, from atmosphere to ferocity. The riffing is unmatched, and the general feeling evoked from this album puts it at the very top of my list.
Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia - Melodic, yet harsh enough. Good vocals, brilliant soloing, and the best atmospheric interludes of any band.
Darkthrone - Panzerfaust - This is what would happen if the great Celtic Frost played proper Black Metal. I love the classic raw feel of 'En Vind Av Sorg' and 'Hans Siste Vinter', while 'Quintessence' has the funniest lyrics in Black Metal!

3. Top Three Black Metal Songs (subject to occasional change):
Windir - Svartesmeden Og Lundamyrstrollet
Nokturnal Mortum - Kolyada
Emperor - Ye Entrancemperium

4. Top Three Black Metal Vocalists:
Krystoffer 'Garm' Rygg - He is one of the most versatile vocalists I've ever heard. He does everything, from shrieks to rasps to spoken word stuff to deep chanting to powerscreams. (Ulver, ex-Arcturus, ex-Borknagar, amongst others)
Thomas 'Quorthon' Forsberg - Versatile, and the one who first introduced the style now known as Black Metal growls. Even though it was so long ago, his still sound better than most! (Bathory)
Per Ingve 'Dead' Ohlin - I don't know how he did it, perhaps inhaling the fumes of the dead raven were helpful, because his vocals actually sound vomit-inducing and bile-soaked. (Mayhem)

5. Top Three Black Metal Guitarists:
A.O. 'Obsidian Claw' Gronbech - Flawless technique, nifty riffing, and a bloody quick pair of hands. (Keep Of Kalessin)
Vegard 'Ihsahn' Tveitan and Thomas 'Samoth' Haugen - Well, Ihsahn does all the work, and would be here alone if he didn't wear his guitar so damn high! Samoth is here for his coolness factor. (Emperor)
Olve 'Abbath' Eikemo - I've heard every Immortal song, but if I hadn't, then I'd still be able to pick out his guitarwork immediately, because it's unique. The tone, the epicness, the chord style... (Immortal, I)

6. Top Three Black Metal Bassists:
They have bass in Black Metal?
I can't really pick this category, seeing as bass is definitely not what I listen for when I'm listening to Black Metal.

7. Top Three Black Metal Drummers:
Jan Axel 'Hellhammer' Blomberg - In every band, his work is outstanding, and does exactly what's required. He's pinpoint accurate, complex, brutal, and superbly complements the music. (Mayhem, Arcturus, plus lots of other bands)
Kjetil 'Frost' Haraldstad - I haven't heard blastbeats faster than his, nor any more brutal, and when that's not what's needed, he can play slow too! (Satyricon, 1349, amongst others)
Gylve 'Fenriz' Nagell - Ok, he's not as good as lots of others, but he epitomises the Black Metal spirit! The coolest cat in Black Metal, by a long shot. (Darkthrone)

There's my opinion on all that.

Ok, I changed the bassists section to lyrics. Well I wanted to see what people would say in the bassist section, now I know. Those who have already posted can feel free to post the bands with the top 3 lyrics in a seperate post as going back to view will be difficult.

Top 3 bands in terms of lyrics:
a.Darkthrone
I think their recent lyrics have not been up to par compared to their older, colder and grimmer stuff. They were the founders of that whole style of lyrics as well and well if you really want to know how I feel about it look at my sig.

b.Ulver
These guys have really good lyrics at times and can be really amazing just to read through it a bit. I like the sentence structure and the story like form that the lyrics take. Its in Norwegian so its not really for everyone generally speaking..

c.Emperor
Everything about Emperor is complex and this transcends to their lyrics as well. They have a complex flow in their lyrics which even reaches throughout the album like in the case of Prometheus..

Top Three Black Metal Bands in terms of Lyrics:

Dissection - Jon Nödtveidt was quite mentally unstable IMO but he wrote some awesome lyrics. Some may find them cheesy, but some of the imagery is truly wondrous.
Borknagar - The lyrics are spread in terms of content, ranging from mythology to cosmic stuff, and despite the word-wankery in newer releases (though not to the same level as Arcturus), messages are veiled and left up to the listener to decide.
Summoning - I'm a die-hard Tolkien fan. Need I say any more?

Emperor and Burzum get honourable mentions too.

Top three in terms of lyrics for me are:-

1. Emperor - They have really amazing lyrics. Very complex and stuff. They talk about varying topics like the eclipse, old emperors and hordes and stuff. They have probably the best lyrics of the lot. I really never listen to emperor without reading the lyrics as well.

2. Bathory - Even though its comparatively simple, its very rhythemic and flowing compared to almost all other bands around. If you read it, its almost like poetry. No need the music even to enjoy reading their lyrics.

3. Satyricon - Most of their lyrics have been really amazing and unique. Even some of the albums that aren't that good have good lyrics. If only we know the lyrics to Dark Medival Times as well.

1. Top three Black Metal bands
-Bathory: although the band changed its style, it should not be forgotton. The band was always great.
-Immortal: very good music and lyrics.
-Dark Funeral: they're Norsecore only for those who haven't heard BM well, and those who consider thrashblack bands like venom, celtic frost etc. BM. Their 'satanic symphony' is indeed very unique and they have good music and aggression.

2. Top three Black Metal albums
Its difficult choice, But I'd name some:
Dark Funeral- The secrets of the black arts. This album does have raw elements, every songs are different from each other and the melody is catchy.
Immortal- Sons of Northern darkness. every songs here are unique and catchy.
Summoning : lugburz. If you haven't listened to this album you're missing something. This album is in the band's old style, and is raw (focussing on guitars) and fast. the sound is complex, and the melody is really very very catchy and good. I strongly recommend this album to all those who like BM. Like others, every songs in this album are different from each other.

3. Top three Black Metal songs
there are many indeed, but some are:
Immortal: Beyond the Northern sea waves. This song is a praise for nordland, but I like the music very much and the lyrics are also good.
Dark Funeral: Shadows Over Transylvania. The melody is very catchy, and the fantasy the lyrics bears is good
Summoning: Flight of Nagzul. Very catchy melody.... Difficult to describe in words, listen to it yourself.

4. Top three Black Metal vocalists
there are many... some are:
Burzum: varg Vikernes: he screams! there's lots of effort in his vocals.
Dark Funeral: Emperor Magus Caligula: he also somewhat screams... and sounds very BM.
Bathory: quorthon. He's the one to start the real BM... venom celtic frost, Helhammer etc are more thrashy.

5. Top three Black Metal guitarists
there are many.. some are
Immortal: demonaz. great skills, and he plays it very skillfully
Dark Funeral: Lord ahriman; his satanic symphonic guitars are indeed unique
Enthroned: D. Nornagest: he plays good solos and composes good songs.

6. Top three Black Metal bands in terms of lyrics
Immortal: Sons Of Northern darkness, see it yourself! The lyrics itslef can give a bette explanation
enthroned: towards the skullthrone of satan
ah.. can't remember!

7. Top three Black Metal drummers
Dark Funeral: matte modin (or something) he's fast ...and good.
Immortal: there were different drummers here, and most of them are good.
abigor: its a 2 man band.. whoever is the drummer..

Ah! this is it!
I have missed out many bands/songs/musicians/albums etc. really very sorry for it because I posted whatever I could remember... there are many great songs, album bands.. many might still be unknown (to me)...
What I want to say in the end is, these aren't the only ones.

Well one more good quasten, but no answers man no answers,
I love all lyrics about nature, mysticism, history, heros, forests, mountains, but well not satanims and all bands what i mention like ULver, Emperor, Immortal, Arcturus, Bishop of Hexen........ I can continue till ... are good lyrics, IMO lyrics say how origigal and talanted are musicians and also what thay try tu put into musoc, so Polish, German, Scandic, French, Slavic, Italian has diferent type of lyrics once I post it somewhere, i try find.
So I hawe no specifical fav lyrics but if thay are like poems I love read all if i like band i like lyrics

Ok I found it

Because IMO those regions what i mention there are lil diferenies in BM sound maybe not sound but lil in lyrics

German - its like Scandic but not so owerated and mor eundergraund nowdays its like begining of Scandic
French - Its melancholy in music, melanchlic BM
Polish - Lil mix between german and Scandic and Slavic
Slavic - BM whit slavic idiology
C and E Europian - More unknow and misantrphic lile mix whit nature and old lagends and french melancholism
Italian - Something who can warm you from inside and full of renesane melancholism

Scandic - Full whit paganism, fate and unknow and same time cold emotions

US - Cant explain

best bands:
1) BURZUM: What Varg did up to Filosofem is just blood-chilling, I don't think I have to explain this choice
2) DESTRÖYER 666: Black/Thrtash as its best... blissful, heavy, awesome vocals, blasphemous as fuck
3) VELVET CACOON: I fall in a dark trance everytime I listen to Genevieve... that album is a drug

BEST ALBUMS
1) VELVET CACOON - "Genevieve" a subtle, deep and stunning masterpiece
2) MARDUK - "Panzer Division Marduk" heaviest BM album EVER
3) MAYHEM - "Live In Leipzig" a black mass on stage

BEST SONGS:
1) Drudkh - "False Dawn" that fucking hypnotic neverending riffing
2) Weakling - "This Entire Fucking Battlefield" that entire fucking battlefield
3) Marduk - "Scorched Earth" I have no cunt, that song had ripped it.

So what, according to you, each song in those languages can only talk about those things? It's almost like you're saying that the languages don't have words for other things, they can ONLY be about something specific. All languages can talk about everything, you realise.

I guarantee I'll forget about a million bands here. Ahh well...

1. Top three Black Metal bands
Darkthrone - Dirty as fuck, raw, evil black metal. No-one (that I can think of) does it better.
Keep of Kalessin - Newer material is dark, brutal and epic. Older material is fast, chilling, and literally the most unnerving music I've ever heard (ie. the end of "Nectarious Red/... Itch...")
Enslaved - Not much to say, other than I really, really like them.

2. Top three Black Metal albums
Keep of Kalessin's 'Armada' - as above. Some of the most exciting music I've heard for ages.
Satyricon's 'Dark Medieval Times' - the combination of raw, grinding passages with the acoustic interludes is perfect. It sounds exactly like its title.
Either Emperor's 'In the Nightside Eclipse' (uses keys extensively, but in a way that doesn't take away the music's grimness or overpower you with symphonic idiocy) or Bathory's 'Blood Fire Death' (it is fire, in the form of a black metal album).

3. Top three Black Metal songs
Keep of Kalessin's 'Armada' - fast, dark, EPIC.
Summoning's 'Our Foes Shall Fall' - not the most grim/dark song ever, but I'll be damned if it doesn't give me goosebumps every time I hear it.

4. Top three Black Metal vocalists
Nocturno Culto - grinding and evil, suits Darkthrone very well.
Quorthon - his voice full of fucking anguish, the sign of a man pouring every ounce of his being into singing/screaming.
Vintersorg - his grim vocals can stand up to anyone else's, and he has one of the most charismatic clean voices I've ever heard.

5. Top three Black Metal guitarists
Obsidian C (Keep of Kalessin) - I would die for his right hand...some of the fastest, cleanest picking I've ever heard.
Euronymous - wasn't technically amazing, but sure know how to play a black metal solo.
Quorthon - his solos are amazing.

6. Top three Black Metal bands in terms of lyrics
Summoning - awe-inspiring lyrics, truly awesome.
Borknagar - covers a lot of themes/whatever, always really sophisticated and appropriate.
Mayhem - I love how brutally in-your-face their lyrics are.

7. Top three Black Metal drummers
Frost - obvious.
Fenriz - DIY smashing around that complements the music's other elements awesomely.
Hellhammer (probably) - fast and technical and cool. If only he'd ease up on the fucking typewriter drum-trigger sound...

Top Three Black Metal bands Lyrics:

1) Emperor - Just some amazing and unique stuff, so different and so captivating, i love it, just to sit and read their lyrics is enjoyable

2) Darkthrone - Just truly really grim lyrics, just pure fucking Black Metal lyrics that are awesome, but moreso in the beginning of their career.

3) Burzum - Just really awesome lyrics, just suits the music really well, and fits really nice with everything.

Maniac from Mayhem (on the De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas) - Just awesome vocals, good growl, and the other vocal style is really cool and adds a new aspect to the music.

Attile did the vocals on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Honestly I thought Maniac was awesome on Deathcrush but his more recent work has been below par in my openion. Somehow Mayhem just doesn't seem to be suited to his kind of vocals.

Hold on , Attila is a good vocalist and he did vocals in DMDS but i think DEAD was the best vocals Mayhem ever get. Dead's vocals are trOO necro grim

I agree completely.. Dead was easily the most insane vocalist Mayhem ever had and he provided an entirely new dimension for Mayhem..
