So I was thinking, what is the best Metal Record label out there? All of the above mentioned labels have reputations for being influential to the metal scene. For example Earache has sponsored numerous Grindcore and Death Metal Bands such as Carcass and Napalm Death, therefore they are kind of seen as a pioneering grind/death label. Relapse is the Label that Nasum comes from.

I guess what it really comes down to is the label that has your favorite bands on it. I used to be a huge Centery Media fan, because they had Shadows Fall, God Forbid, Arch Enemy, and alot of other good bands. But I realised that there is alot better out there as far as labels go. So, how bout you guys? (sorry if I missed any other important labels)

Oh and by the way, I hate Roadrunner, but they have some great bands signed to them, Like Megadeth, Dream Theater, 3 Inches of Blood, Opeth etc. So that's why they are up there.

Poll

Which of these is your prefered metal Record Label?

Nuclear Blast
43
Other
36
Metal Blade
12
Relapse
11
Spinefarm
9
Century Media
7
Road Runner
7
Earache
6

I voted for Nuclear Blast. It was a tough choice between them, Century Media and Spinefarm. But Nuclear Blast seems to have a good reputation for being good with the bands unlike alot of record companies who abuse the contract power.

Wait, are Finnish Spinefarm and Spikefarm the same thing, or 2 different labels???

One is a subdivision of the other, so it is more or less the same label.

Yeah. Inhuman Rampage is soooo over the top. I can't get through that whole album without getting bored. But oh well, they were pretty good live.

I personally think that their first two albums were better, and I do think that a little record label named roadrunner had something to do with it lol (even though their first two albums are pretty over the top as well.....)

Yeah, Roadrunner only signs the most marketable bands, the most accessible and easy to listen to. Your not going to find anything raw or experimental on that label. Not that Dragonforce was either of those before Roadrunner, but your right, with the new album the over the top shit got a bit out of hand, probably Roadrunner wanted more flash than substance so all the 14 year olds would go "oooo really fast gee-tars!" and buy the album. Which would also explain the newest Megadeth, yes I liked it, but at the same time most of the slightly progressive elements found in albums like Rust In Peace were removed, and given a very catchy sound, riffs that seems a bit overused but stay in your head.

I 'm surprised that Earache is so low on the list.
With bands as Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Terrorizer, Entombed, At the Gates, Cathedral, Bolt Thrower, Godflesh....do I need to go on? It' s just a personel taste though.

I voted other since the choice for me is between Drakkar and Norma Evangelium Diaboli. Another label with just about only quality releases on it was Deathlike Silence. Peaceville is also very nice though, as are Earache and Season Of Mist. Candlelight also isn't an absolute shit label.

I've also found that most stuff released through Nokturnal Transmissions has some quality, though this is quite an underground label.

Support more underground labels and bands instead of greedy Nuclear Blast and their greedy bands. And don't support Roadrunner with all their shitty bands they're promoting.

How do you decide which label you like more or less? Just for the bands that are signed to it? I guess there are some other reasons, like the labels' policies, but exactly are they?

I generally decide by the stuff they release. If a label released a bunch of awesome albums then it's good. Only other thing that I look for is if they promote underground bands, or if they do really stupid shit (like Earache when they dropped !T.O.O.H.!, forcing them to quit since they didn't get any money, or the label that ripped off Demilich).

But generally:
If a label releases crap it's crap. If it releases good stuff it's good. If it releases awesome stuff then it's just .

According to this reasoning Roadrunner is also Good since they released awesome stuff from 1982 - 1994 or thereabouts.

Unique Leader Records for the win, almost every band on the label blows my mind in half. They have sickest technical death metal and brutal death metal. My favorite bands from there current roster are Severed Savior, Hour of Penance, Beheaded, Deeds of Flesh, Inveracity, and Internal Suffering. They definently know how to pick there roster to because they used to have Spawn of Possession, Disavowed, Disgorge, Odious Mortem, and Psycroptic. The next bands to look out for on the label though are Vomit the Soul and Reciprocal those two bands next releases will fucking destroy.

Yes, but they released a bunch of crap since. Roadrunner was good. Doesn't mean Roadrunner IS good...

Yeah, after the Death Metal community caught a bunch of international crap then people started seeing them as "dangerous" and "evil". This also made them a business/investment risk, so roadrunner cut off all of their DM bands and signed on New ones. I do believe suffocation got their start on Roadrunner. Now....well now Roadrunner sucks.
