Enslaved. For me RUUN was the best progressive album ever. Damnation and Watershed lowered Opeth in my eyes...

These two are tied right now...kinda weird. Cool that I made this and after that, this tour took place! Gives some Americans the chance to literally compare them back to back.

Damn you old man! Enslaved were supposed to come here with Keep Of Kalessin, in which they'd put on a sweet show, they'd become one of my favourite bands, I'd become all-knowing about Enslaved and we'd all live happily ever after. But no, they cancelled, then like a week later they announced the tour with Opeth, and guess whose town they're not stopping in?

that sucks, but i will not shed any tears. the initial tour had them missing my entire state... now they're performing a scant 20 minute drive from my house.

Some follow up. i'm more of an Enslaved fan than an Opeth fan (i did discover both at roughly the same time, had no allegiance to either early on)... so that's out in advance.

just got back form seeing them play. both bands were good on stage. Opeth gets points for delving a bit further into their back catalog, playing tracks of "My Arms, Your Hearse" and "Still Life", and Mikael was funnier doing in-between song banter "when you say our band name, Opeth, you must say it in a deep voice... OPETH, but when you say my name, you can say it in a high voice, like a girl... Mikael."

Enslaved were amusing as well, in between songs, with Grutle mocking American beer - namely Bud LIght (which deserves mocking)... later during another break, Ivar (the big bear looking guitarist) mentioning we had some good beer after his tour of the Sierra Nevada brewery. (SN does rock.)

Enslaved, however, were the better live band. Again, both sounded good. really good. Opeth were fairly statuesque on stage, as was Ivar from Enslaved. Enslaved are a bit more active while playing - Grutle's fucking glare is amazing - it's like he's like at/through you. He makes gestures with his fretting hand during segments of songs which just involve "low E chugging."

Ice Dale, though, is the man. He and Grutle both interacted with the audience during songs, leaning out over the audience... but Ice even performed his solos with with guitar upright, outstretched, and sideways to him and the audience... really good stage presence. he's a fucking rock star.

They also took a collective bow after their 45 minutes (sad they didn't get more time to dip into their back catalog), shaking hands with those in the front row. additionally a signing session was held during the intermission where fans got to meet each of the band members.

between a more active stage presence, and the step of actually interacting directly with the fans after the fact, they get a definitive edge.

Opeth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even when enslaved Has creaated great albums and his music is as deep as Opeth's i still prefer the Swedish masters, bacause of their perfection in their songwriting

Enslaved !! never liked opeth !! and for sure enslaved combine with a good mix of viking progressive black and agressive metal !! what could be better than that

Opeth is far better than Enslaved in their song-writing.

Well, thanks for that, man...but uh, I'm pretty sure everyone realized that already. We know what genres they play, but that doesn't help us understand why you personally choose Opeth. Opeth for me.... is no real answer.

well just like them more I prefer their sound but yeah of course Enslaved is a cool band too

My message seems kinda mean when I read it myself, lol. When I wrote it, I actually meant it in a more fun way... and I would take Opeth over Enslaved any day, but they're both extraordinary bands.

I don't think any person in the world can be compared to the amazing vocal range of mikael akerfeldt.. and i don't think that damnation or watershed lowered opeth.. Those were just the proofs of their boundless talent. Enslaved is a great band but i would vote for Opeth

I've never really gotten into Opeth. I can't really say why. It isn't like their music is really bad or anything. Maybe I just expect them to live up to all the praise they get. They don't.

Enslaved on the other hand is one of my favorite bands in any genre. I love their early black metal releases and their last three or four albums have some of the greatest rock/metal tunes I've ever heard.

So, yeah. Enslaved gets my vote, easy.

Enslaved definitely, even though the last albums are pointless. Most of the time I try to listen to any Opeth album I eventually fall asleep. Literally.

Overall Enslaved but I still don't like the path they're going down so probably Opeth at this point.

They've got a more interesting back catalog and their 'new' style is great. Meanwhile, Opeth continue to impress me about as much as the newest breakthrough in toaster technology. Not to mention that their 'genius' songwriting style is beyond predictable.

I dont think it's a rightful comparison, opeth and enslaved are both progressive of their separate genres but enslaved keeps it more black metal than opeth keeps it death if forced to choose i'd say opeth for being more progressive

I've seen Enslaved live and love them dearly but they don't draw me into the music as well as Opeth does so my vote goes to Opeth.

They have a lot more song structure to their music. Opeth usually has one tone that leads up to one riff. Opeths music is complicated by yet in the end its pretty simple. Great band though, love the but enslaved takes the cake.

You really can't compare them though.
