There used to be a similar topic in the old forum which I thought was really good. So many polls with different lists of bands are around these days and just wanted to make a topic which will encompass almost all bands. The idea is to list out the following:

1. Top three Black Metal bands

2. Top three Black Metal albums

3. Top three Black Metal songs

4. Top three Black Metal vocalists

5. Top three Black Metal guitarists

6. Top three Black Metal bands in terms of lyrics

7. Top three Black Metal drummers

If possible explain your choices and try to be original with your list. If someone else's list is pretty much what your's would be you may state that without actually spamming. I've kept it down to top three for a reason and that's to ensure that people don't go overboard with their posts. Hence please ensure that you follow the guidelines of the topic. Having said that, get posting all

Yeah I know what you mean. Live in Leipzig was just amazing and so was Deathcrush.. Mayhem's older stuff was just unbeatable.. Currently I'm trying to get all their bootlegs and stuff as well, just to have everything they have done.. Got Live in Leitz a few weeks back..

Can you tell me what you think of it? How's the production, atmosphere..?

Can you maybe also comment on their 'Last Breath' bootleg? (I think that is what it's called..)

A question, how strict do we have to be when writing the list? Just Black Metal? Or can we put bands like Hellhammer on the list, which played something like Black/Death Thrash Metal? And are Symphonic/Melodic forms of Black Metal allowed too?
I'm always afraid of writing in these Black Metal topics, the fans usually gets crazy if I mention a band not "blackish" enough (I remember when I mentioned Gorgoroth, which I sure consider to be Black, in the Black Metal topic and I got quoted by like a billion persons with different opinions).

Well Live in Leitz has terrible production lol but the atmosphere is ok. I dont have an original version (my supplier says its a bit difficult to find apparently) and the version I have needs a bit of volume to hear it properly. Hellhammers drumming is amazing in it(something about this guys drumming when he plays live) and its the same lineup as in Live in Leipzig. If you liked Live in Leipzig, its good to get it although Live in Leipzig was a better album live in terms of production and how clearly you can hear some stuff ..

I haven't heard of the Last Breath bootleg though..

The bootlegs that I have are:
1. Dawn of the Black Hearts
2. Tribute to the Black Emperors
3. From the Darkest Past
4. In Memorium
5. Carnage

Live albums:
1. Live in Leipzig
2. Live in Leitz
3. MediolanuM Capta Est (the M capital is like that on the cover)

Demo's
1. Pure Fucking Armageddon
2. Voice of a Tortured Skull... Euronymous on vocals on these

Compilations
1. Out from the Dark
2. Ancient Skin/Necrolust
3. European Legions

Albums all except Ordo Ad Chao.. Still there are lots of unofficial bootlegs from Mayhem and a few more official releases that I need to get.. Damn I like listing my albums..

If you're looking for quality production in a live album by Mayhem, check out MediolanuM Capta Est. It includes tracks from the underrated Wolf's Lair Abyss and Deathcrush with Maniac on vocals and a guest appearance by Attila.. I obviously prefer their older stuff though..

Symphonic and Melodic forms of Black Metal are accepted although if you mention bands like Cradle of Filth or something dont be surprised if people start insulting you.. Gorgoroth is definitely Black Metal regardless of what anyone says specially because of their older stuff. Newer albums have been disappointing which is why most fans say stuff..

Personally I quite like Hellhammer and I have lots of respect for early Black Thrash. Death Thrash will not be considered Black Metal though.. Many bands cite Hellhammer as influences in Black Metal so they can be accepted in this thread although the more Black Metal it is the more relevant to the thread it is.. So ensure that if you're mentioning them make sure that there is Black Metal involved rather than Death Metal or pure Thrash Metal if u follow..

Deleted my old list, new one:

Top three Black Metal bands:
1. Dissection
I think I just have to. What Jon Nödtveidt did with the two first albums is just amazing. Those classics will always be favourites of mine.
2. Shining
Not just because of the music but I believe that this band writes the best lyrics out there.
3. Cradle of Filth
Bash me all you want, but old BM Cradle released some awesome albums which was atmospheric as hell.

Top three Black Metal albums
1. Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
I don't think there will ever be a BM album as good as this one. It has everything you ask for. Awesome vocals, great music, catchy and memorable.
2. Watain - Sworn to the Dark
A modern classic which reminds me a lot of my first choice.
3. Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
This is the way majestic BM should sound like, everything worked out perfectly here.

Top three Black Metal songs:
1. Nokturnal Mortum - Perun's Celestial Silver
Awesome work! Catchy, dark, epic and so beautiful. I've listened to it so much, my sister can hum the main riff.
2. Burzum - Det som en gang var
One of the most atmospheric songs ever and the solo is just perfect.
3. Gorgoroth - Gorgoroth
Norwegian Black Metal in a nut shell. Perfection all the way through.

Top three Black Metal vocalists
1. Ihsahn
He has it all. The growls are awesome and his clean vocals are beautiful. The Mikael Åkerfeldt of Black Metal.
2. Jon Nödtveidt
Perfect growls for the genre.
3. Dani Filth
Dani's voice was so unique and those vocals are hard to beat even to this day.

Top three Black Metal guitarists
1. Tom Gabriel Warrior
What he did in Celtic Frost is still just so heavy it almost blows my mind.
2. Jon Nödtveidt
Crushing riffs and awesome technique.
3. Varg Vikernes
Can create atmosphere out of the most simple riffs.

Top three Black Metal bands in terms of lyrics
1. Shining
Those lyrics are just the best ever. Very deep and almost poetic.
2. Lifelover
Probably just because it's in Swedish which makes it feel much more... true for me. But they do have some clever and some funny lyrics.
3. Dimmu Borgir
The ones in Norwegian.

Top three Black Metal drummers
1. Frost

2. Hellhammer

I don't listen too much to black metal, i guess if you were to be a little loose on the classifications these would be the bands i listen to:
-immortal
-secrets of the moon
-venom
-mercyful fate
-summoning(a bit)

i personally do not count MF and Venom as black metal, MF is more like "satanized" nwobhm and Venom would be in my mind thrash metal. calling them black metal would be like calling Ac/Dc heavy metal, just because they helped define the sound(only barely for MF and Venom though) and attitude of one genre doesn't mean they should be classified within that.

anyway, top 3 songs from the remaining 2 bands.. hmm..
1. Against the Tide(In the Arctic World) by Immortal
2. Blashyrkh Mighty Ravendark also by Immortal
3. Lucifer Speaks by Secrets of the Moon

all great melodic black metal, i don't really have a love for the trvv evil stuff out there like Marduk or Darkthrone or whatever, they just sound too harsh for me.

Gordon Freeman
I don't really feel qualified to pick three black metal bands out of so many but I do have some ideas on what the three best albums may be.

Ulver: Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne til Ulven i Manden

I think this album is oft overlooked in this type of discussion as Ulver went in a completely different direction after its release. But I feel it is one of the most intense and inspired black metal album of the late 90's.

Burzum: Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

Four words describe the excellence of this landmark Det. Som. Engang. Var.

Immortal: Pure Holocaust

A monumental slab of cold, cold black metal and possibly the best to come out of the early Norwegian scene.

A couple of also-mentions; Darkthrone: Transilvanian Hunger, Countess: Heilig Vuur, and Absu: Tara
