While we are preparing for the 2023 Metal Storm Awards, here is an early contender for the 2024 edition. The user Illusion's_Void suggested it in the shoutbox (thank you!), and rightly said that it sounds like a mix of Mgła and White Ward. Darkside is behind the drum kit, and he is killing it as usual. The Fall (live member of Mgła) is singing and playing all the other instruments.

Erik Wunder’s (Cobalt) new song of his solo project:

Oh thanks for sharing! Didn't know he had a solo project. Sounds very avant-garde! I don't think I've ever heard someone play dissonant saxophone before; it kinda works, I guess. Cool atmosphere, not sure I enjoy it entirely, but seems promising

This is the most obvious suggestion one can make. In case you don't know it, good luck finding your way out of this rabbit hole.

Oh god. There is a special place in Hell where they just play this forever.

Solid Black Metal , with a very nice ambient track at the end which reminds me of Interstellar

Really exquisite stuff! I'd love to include it in the Clandestine Cuts, but it came out a while ago in the beginning of the year, and it also has distribution from Psalmodist Records. Superb recommendation, though!

I know I often overestimate things, but this album is something else. Gothic noise rock? Amazeballs

a few monts too late, but I need to say this is such a tune. Heavily reminds me of Wailin Storms. Might be my AotY as of now. The bandname realy is apt for their sound. Thanks for the recommendation

Not sure I'll get round to reviewing it, but this is possibly the first predominantly grindcore release from this year to really grab my attention - it's got all the intense onslaughts of grindcore plus some hints from mathcore, but there's also some subtle lighter or quirkier textures woven in amidst the aggression that gives it an extra dimension from most grindcore I've found recently:

Off-the-rails avant-garde cacophonic juggernaut from members of Scald (UK) - slightly Voidhanger-esque black/death chaos in parts, but also has a grim industrial slant, and also some slower, more brooding death metal

Sweet, apparently "Magick metal" is a thing now. Id est, bands that play music similar to Black Magick SS, and there is a whole lot of acts on bandcamp.

This upcoming one in particular seems promising. The vocals remind me of Raventhrone which was another tongue in cheeck black metal band that was pretty fun yet disbanded too early:

Some other stuff:

'Magickal Stones' lel:

This one is also really good, it has that lofi Black Magick SS production:

Anyway, you get the idea... It's a genre now and I love it.

1. Razorback MX's "Eternal Abyss"

The new album yet to be added in the database, but what a powerful record.

2. Polish Thrash metal Exist's "Frog Bomb". It's a follow-up to the debut album "In The Void We Last" in 2021.

Most impressive album of the year so far, for me:

Cave Sermon - Divine Laughter

Came as a total surprise, still equally as incredible close to the end of the year.

For me as well.

It's still wrestling with some of the strongest contenders like Dvne, High on Fire, Thou, Inter Arma to name few here.

Alright I haven't posted anything in here this year but I found some absolutely wacky stuff that I needed to share

This band went from lofi depressive black metal to whatever the hell this is and I kinda dig it
Weird avant-garde blackgaze with some strange electronic and hyperpop influence
Feels both incredibly earnest and like a shitpost at the same time

Solid stuff, which is surprising despite being (apparently) a meme band.
It kinda reminds me of Xpelleir
