20.06.2006 - 02:18 Written by X-FrEaK on 20.06.2006 at 02:04 If it weren't for Prince Henry, Vasco da Gama, Magellan, etc., it would have taken much longer to discover the 'New World', I admit. But who financed Columbus' expeditions and controlled the whole Iberian Peninsula for a couple of years? ![]() @K7: Well, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique speak Portuguese, hehe! And don't forget the only thing my Spanish ancestors mastered was mass murder and slavery. Our history isn't one to be proud of. Funny enough, we are probably the only European country that constantly admits the failure of colonialism. I mean: We are all aware that colonialism was wrong. From Bartolomé de las Casas in the 16th century until the South American liberators in the 19th century, there have always been critical voices towards Spanish imperialism - inside our very country. Today, we all know that it was a big fault that cost millions of lives and destroyed several societies... but take a look at the rest of Europe! The French recently passed a law supporting the heritage of French colonialism, the British still hold their Commonwealth, and so on.

@taktsekte: if there was ONE good colonizator country, it was Spain.. abused occured in South America, of course, but they were very human overall and the idea of the "evangelization" for over submission of the native people was very strong... South America is a kind of perfect mic between indian and european culture, and that's than to spaniards that didn't came with the mood of imposing.

While I agreee that colonisation was probably a bad thing , for the natives of the countries concerned anyway. I would also like to say that many countries of Africa were much better when they were colonies. Now that they are free to govern themselves many of them have decended into civil war and corruption. Take for example Zimbabwe - which used to be a British colony - since they have had indepence they have taken all the white farmers land away , given it to friends of the President - who have no idea of farming. Now the people are starving. Didn't Portugal colonise Sri Lanka as well?

China, USA, Spain, Portugal? And their huge partners. Well the world's population's 90 percent surely heard about these countries. But What about the smaller ones? Like Hungary for example. Cause that's where I live and believe me, people live here too. Even if you didn't know. Well of course maybe you heard about Attila the Nomad. Or Dracula, the vampire, from the legends. But that's all. We' re damned to fade into oblivion. Well I don't think anyone cares about us, but if you do, just ask me. I can tell you lot.

ahhhhh The Bahamas.....well, it's common for Europeans as well as Americans to fantiscise about paradise when the word "Bahamas" comes to mind. Wow, where to start? lol Well obviously the first inhabitants ov The Bahamas were tan / coloured tribal people. I say it's obvious because North / Central / South America, The Caribbean and The Atlantic are where all Tan people origionate from. Like how South America had the Pigmees, Like how Central America had The Aztecs, Like how North America had the Sioux.....The Bahamas had the Arawaks. I think we all know the story ov Christopher Colombus and how he discovered The New World. Colombus was not the first White / European to land in that part ov the world, it was actually Leif Erikson (who discovered New Foundland, Canada) , but he was the very first White Man to set foot in The Bahamas. The Arawaks viewed him as a God (since he looked so very different from them and was more advanced than they were). now i will copy and paste something i posted in a different topic .....a History ov White Bahamians (Myself) :July 4th, 1776. The Independence Day for America lol.....My fathers ov the past wanted to stay loyal to the Queen Ov England.....(Though at this time, my fathers were Americans as well) The Americans declared the Loyalists as "TRAITORS"......So they tarred us, feathered us, denied us ov rights to any property or land.......so we fled to Bermuda.....soon to then land in Eleuthera (Bahamas) afterwards then it spread.....Nowadays most loyalist decendants may be found in Abaco (Bahamas) which is miles north ov Nassau (where i live). In America many still uphold the beliefs ov their fathers (i.e. REDNECKS!) likewise.....In The Bahamas, White Bahamians uphold the beliefs ov their fathers before them (i.e. The "Conchy Joes"). The term, "Conchy Joe" was actually coined by White Americans who visited The Bahamas, that's what they used to call White Bahamians. Nowadays Americans don't even know what "Conchy Joe" means, cause it's mostly Black Bahamians who use that term these days. Yes, when The Bahamas gained Independence on July 10th, 1973 (even though it was strictly The Black Bahamians who wanted it!).....Abaco (the island with the largest Conchy Joe Percentile) nearly RIOTED because like their ancestors (the loyalists) they wanted to stay loyal to The Queen. ....Now for The Black Bahamians (who are the majority). Black Bahamians (and probably Black Americans too, i dunno) are direct descendants ov West African tribes (Ibo and Mandingo) and became slaves. The Loyalists were the ones who owned those slaves until it was abolished in The Bahamas in 1806. In the Bahamas, in terms ov the races...there are "whites", "blacks" and "coloureds"...ummm between Black and Whites, the ratio is 85% Black and 15% white (all the Bahama Islands combined), but the percentage ov coloured people, i dunno. Anyways, just like how White Bahamians are "Conchy Joes", Coloured (or mixed) Bahamians are called "Mango Skins" (Some ov those people are descendants ov The Arawaks and may be found in Long Island (Bahamas)) . But anyways back to the Blacks......the reason why there's such an overwhelming number ov them is because, the slave owners encouraged them to have sex and breed multiple babies and it just ended up that way.....The 'Blackest' Bahama Island is probably Andros (the biggest ov the Bahama islands which is miles west ov where i live and is the closest Bahama Island to Florida) . Ummmm wow lol this soudns horrible but, Whites and Coloureds have their nicknames ("Conchy Joe" and "Mango Skin") which are considered Positive......but Black Bahamians don't have a postive name! lol, the lower class 'gangster' ones are usually called "Junglists". yep, well that's the people ov my nation.

lupas WTF?! A lot of ppl know about Hungary. E.g. Hungary started to tair down trhe Iron Curtain, The Capital is a world city, Attilla the Hun was from a different tribe. Belive me, they had nothing to do with us, hungarians. All of it is just a case of ignorant european labeling of wondering tribes. Bram Stoker's Dracula lived here, in Transylvania, which is a Romanian territory today but Franz Liszt was a Hungarian, we invented high-tension electricity transit, and according to 2003's statistics, the hungarian people are the world's most sexually active [intercourse average 152 times a year]. Oh, there's a huge Hungarian diaspora today [mainly in the US and Romania]

I just told the man, that the character Dracula was depicted as living in Transylvania. So he has nothing to do with Hungary. I meant it as a correction. And I think I mentioned that it is Bram Stoker's Dracula, the basis of the Hollywood Dracula, thus being fictional. taka, chill, I meant no offence and nothing I said was untrue. Not by one word did I say, that Transylvania was Hungarian land.

Something like the Middle-East and the West Balkans plus some other places I dont recall. All of these places were/are waging war often in more recent times. Think I'll be back with more.

Oh and another very notable point (or 2) about my country is , unlike the oh so famous U.S. ....... you can't get prosecuted for using a Direct TV pirate card! There's fvcking signs in the road saying stuff like "DSS Card Programming Located down the road blah blah blah" haha. Well in Nassau that is, i've never heard ov Card Programmers from the other family islands. ALSO, To pump gas is no self-service, people actually do it for you, and the same goes with packing your groceries when you buy them, we call those people 'packing boys'.....Also our drinking age is 18 as opposed to 21. ahhh the benefits ov my country, yet i hate my town!

Well, my part to tell something about my country... Yesterday 28 October, was a national day, since we celebrated the famous "No" ("Oxi" in greek) to the talian fascists back in 1940... That was also the entrance of Greece in World War II... The Italians asked for a permission to march through our lands! They got the proper answer! There is also another national day, 25 March, were we celebrate the begining of the Revolution against Turkey's occupation, since the fall of Constantinople. That day, 25 March 1821, the first greek flag, after almost 300 years of slavery, was raised here in Peloponnese...

The Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance forcing the Finnish government into unwanted friendship towards Sovjet. Kekkonen the Finnish President for 26 years. Let's speak about my country again... Today, 17th Novermber is also a kind of a national day for students. Back in 1973, the Athens Polytechnic Student Uprising was the begining of the fall of the dectators and their goverment, the "Regime of the Colonels" Here's a part of Wikipedia and what happend then: "On November 14, 1973 students at the National Technical University of Athens (also known as "Athens Polytechnic" or Polytechneion) went on strike and started protesting against the military regime (Regime of the Colonels). There was no response, so the students barricaded themselves in and built a radio station (using materials from the laboratories) that repeatedly broadcast across Athens: "Here is Polytechneion! People of Greece, the Polytechneion is the flag bearer of our struggle and your struggle, our common struggle against τhe dictatorship and for democracy! On first hours of November 17 1973, Papadopoulos sent the army to crush the demonstration. An AMX 30 Tank (currently kept in an armored unit museum in Avlonas) crashed through the rail gate of the Athens Polytechnic after 03:00 am and under almost complete darkness caused by the forced shutdown of the city lights (by that time only the lights in the National Technical University yard were turned on, powered by the electricity generators of the laboratories of the electrical engineers). Evidence of the events taken place have been captured by a hidden Dutch journalist in film footage. The film is quite dark but clear enough to show that the tank crashed down the main steel entrance of the "Athens Polytechnic" along with students still climbed on it. Also in recordings of the free "Athens Polytechnic" radio transmitting at the time from the occupied premises, a young man's voice is heard asking desperately the soldiers (who he calls 'brothers in arms') surrounding the building complex, to refuse obey the military orders and not to fight 'brothers protesting'. The voice carries on to an emotional outbreak, reciting the lyrics of the Greek National anthem called Hymn to Freedom written by Dionysios Solomos, until the time the Tank enters the yard. By that time the radio ceased to transmit. According to a contested official investigation undertaken after the fall of the Junta, no students of the Athens Polytechnic were killed during the incident. However a few of them have been left severely injured by the tank for the rest of their lifes. Total recorded casualties amount to 24 civilians killed outside Athens Polytechnic campus. These include 19-year old Michael Mirogiannis, reportedly shot in cold blood by officer G. Dertilis, high-school student Diomedes Komnenos, and a five-year old boy caught in the crossifire in the suburb of Zografou. The records of the trials held following followed the collapse of the Junta (the name of the regime - pronounced Hunta), document the circumstances of the deaths of many civilians during the uprising, and it is possible that the official numbers are too modest. The matter however is highly political, so there is no real agreement on it to this date."
