All of the nominees for death metal were bullshit Septicflesh isn't evena fucking death metal band and they won. Krisiun was one of the worst albums of the year for death metal definently had no place in the nominations. Recueil Morbide another band that ISNT death metal. The Monolith Deathcult also NOT death metal.

You consider Krisiun one of the worst death metal albums of the year, that is your opinion. Loads of people (also people that play death metal) consider it one of the best. So, tastes differ.

And please oh mighty one, all knowing death metal expert, enlighten us as to what Septicflesh, Recueil Morbide, The Monolith Deathcult are since you THINK they aren't death metal. And you know what death metal is and we don't, apparently. Why do you THINK they aren't death metal? Just cause you don't like them?

Speaking of Krisiun's album, it's one of the DM nominees that actually enjoyed at least a little being not too much into DM.

septic flesh is like symphonic black metal or atleast far more black metal oriented then death metal to the point where i wouldnt consider it death metal let alone the best death metal album of the year in order to qualify for that you should have to play straight up death metal because there is enough of those kind of bands that you dont need to include bands that are only kinda of a bit death metal influenced. Recueil Morbide i was just in a bad mood because they were included in it and other bands werent like you said haha but they are very hardcore influenced so again kinda sorry for going off. but come on The Monolith Deathcult they're another band id consider more along the lines of industrial metal and blackend death at best. once again there's enough good DEATH METAL bands that have albums out that you could have included without getting shit that's barely death metal influenced that was all i was trying to say. i have nothing against any of the bands chosen for there music i just think that if youre going to have a death metal poll it should be for death metal and yes i understand you probably wanted to include shit thats all over the place so people who lke that kind of death metal so people can choose according to there taste but most of the people on here who haven't heard anything that heavy. so if youre going to have a poll like that can you atleast makea seperate poll like you have enough other subgenres that you go into atleast have another for death metal. thank you.

I'm overall pleased with the results, especially for Amon Amarth.
My brother recommended I listen to Virgin Black, and they won an award, so I'll go do that now :]

better yet skip them and listen to every other artist in the Doom Metal category first.

Damn, you, old man. I wanted to quote her and suggest the exact same thing you suggested.

But of course you ARE right here. Skip Virgin Black and check out the OTHER nominees in the doom category instead.

Haha.
Yeah, I've listened to them once before, didn't really enjoy it, but then my brother mentioned them again the other day and I though, eh why not?
Still haven't done it yet though, heh.

uhm, after sombre romantic nothing by virgin black is really interesting. they are just skilled and they know how to build a good record, but there is very little talent in what they did lately.

Yes, sadly that seems to happen a lot.

Alright, well here's the breakdown of it all then. Let someone who knows what death metal is make the death metal poll. Just as I wouldn't want to be the one responsable for making the poll for gothic metal or doom metal because I don't know enough about. I also haven't heard enough albums from it to make an informed decision about what the top of that genre is. I didn't vote in any of the polls unless I heard every single album that was in it. However, I know most people on here just go from poll to poll voting for the most familiar name they know. Thus by having bands that are true to the genre instead of bands that are placed where they don't belong, we have people just going and voting for something such as Septicflesh as the best death metal album because that's the name they know. I guess there's still no way of stopping people from voting on things of which they do not know. Atleast by having bands of the proper genre in the proper poll fans of the genre won't be disapointed by seeing a black metal band win the best death metal album. So please next time consider looking into finding someone to put in charge of each genres poll who is generally concieved on here is an expert in that genre. Thanks.

How much validity do some people draw from these awards!
Even if users frantically download all 10 nominations for all 13 or so categories, that still leaves a heap of other albums that weren't considered too. Obviously bands like Metallica and Amon will win their categories by default.
How many people are that metal-educated, have the free time and the expanse of taste to obtain all 100+ albums nominated? And listen to them more than once or get a feel for what is 'better' than another?
Absurd!
I know I certainly haven't heard so many of these albums.
I wouldn't get too bothered people, it is, after all, a popularity contest.

Another quote by me.

You don't have to vote in every category, you know. I, for one, and with me many Staffers, voted in only three or four categories. Why? Because those were the only categories in which we felt expertized enough to cast a vote. I could have voted in the Power metal category, or the Atmospheric/Symphonic category. But what would my vote mean? I don't know most of those bands, and even if I would know them all, I'd probably not enjoy them. I'm not going to listen to those bands, so I'm not eligible to vote.

Quote me all you like Yes, and i'm in agreement with you too. I only voted in about four categories myself. However there would be plenty of people who felt the need to vote in categories they don't really like or about bands they don't really listen to. That's why I wouldn't vote in thrash...
Helstar is so far removed from the rest of those bands. I'm guessing it is the staffers choice due to the anti-flower sentiment, and hey.. that's democracy. In MS staff at least.
In my opinion the things that make US power less ballsy are the need to do the whole macho, bravado, anti-Christian, etc. stuff. They rely on gimmicks closer to thrash while borrowing a few key elements of power. Like look at Helstars myspace... they're trying to do the whole Jack Daniels/junkie look.

And now for my rant on the awards:

[angry ranting and bitching and emo whining mode on]

Now where to start...
The Best Alternative Metal Album
Meshuggah's ObZen is an ObZolete release, generic technical wankery we have heard 324497655 times before - and better. ObZen is a perfect cure for insomnia. Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King second... Cryptopsy's Unspoken King second place.... the unspoken monarchy where everybody rebelled against in the beginning of 2008 to a level far greater then the French Revolution. So why did this ended second place?! is there really no justice in this world?! I didn't find Cryptopsy past releases of brutal death metal that great but it's gold compared to the Unspoken King.

The Best Atmospheric/Symphonic Metal Album
Since when is Haggard is this big? my god they have grown. And please don't tell me there most blandest effort till date "Tales Of Ithiria" was there breaktrough... people these days seem to like bland albums....

Gothic Metal
Any of those albums on the list is way better then Poorly Done Cliche Eternal from Moonspell. The landslide of votes for Moonspell is depressing. I can already hear the cries and tears of joy from those Portuguese dickwads who bitched and moaned about my review. I expect a reply soon which would probably look like this "ha! Night Eternal has won you cynical biased Dutch asshole! and you're crappy review couldn't change a thing, we will defend what is ours and don you ever forget it!!" Which I will reply smiling "yeah, keep on defending Moonspell, because it's the only band you can defend since it's you're country's only big band and that why you kept humping it in the voting. Besides you guys will defend everything of Moonspell no matter how crap, this is proven by the best video category. Where you morons voted
Scorpion Flower as the best clip even tough it's god damn horrible, everyone with a bit of brain can see that.

Heavy Metal
Nobody is probably going to take me serious on this, since I really hate Metallica and I fire my hate cannons each time when a Metallica news/review/topic is in sight. No to mention I don't like Heavy metal, but this..... really hurts. I really feel for all you heavy metal fans, how a very mediocre and a lame fart in the face album could even enter awards... It's a blasphemy to Metal. The massive amount of votes for Metallica also creep me out, some one please start using the banhammer and cleanse Metalstorm of Metallica fanboy filth.

The Biggest Surprise
I knew it I knew it I knew it I knew it! My crystal ball was correct! I knew the Metallicatards would go like "ZOMG!!11 Metallica is going back to there roots!!11 tha next isa probably going 2 be just az goood as Master of pupetz!" when they heard the slightly trashy Death Magnetic. But Metallicatards don't run on logic or else they would have noticed that Metallica did it once again pure for the money, Death Magnetic has that semi trashcore gay groove feel to it that's popular these days. If emocore is going to be the next fad Metallica will play it mark my words, Metallica are just that low. Death Magnetic is what at least you can expect after such atrocious album as St.Wanker, were you guys really that sick to think that Metallica was going to make an album worse then St.Wanker?

Metalcore
I hate metalcore but still my heart goes out to those metalcore fans who voted for Protest The Hero... just to see it fall behind Bullet For My Valentine..

last not least: Opeth fanboys, yeah we know Opeth is god and you would probably sell you're own mom if it means getting money for the next Opeth album or Opeth concert. But is it really neccersary to hump them all the way to the top in ever god damn f*cking category?!

[angry ranting and bitching and emo whining mode off]

I would like to apologize to any one who I have consulted with that rant. I just had to get that off my back. Also a double apologize to Bloodtears and Slaytallica for being one of the few portuguese who are unbiased. I would like to thank dismaleuphony for the many new great releases I have discovered in the symphonic section and an aplause to Bittercold for the best drama section which was very well written. And A good job to Lucas and the other staffer who tried to make the awards as unbiased as possible by spreading links of other great bands trough the rest of the site. Unfortunally the results are just:

I actually agree on everything you just said there.

My less diplomatic side agrees with these two points 100%, though you put it stronger than I would, and I'm pretty sure everyone already knows my two cents on the matter. Straight forward heavy metal is probably my personal favourite genre, and the moment I saw Metallica nominated in that category the child in me died a little bit more, because I then knew my vote was useless. Noticing Judas Priest came in second place is just like salt in the wound.

You don't like heavy metal? You do realize that in the end, all metal IS heavy metal....duh...

I don't fucking care if you want to put heavy metal into some stupid subgenre but in the end all metal you listen to is heavy metal...and how can you dislike heavy metal and be on this website anyway? It makes no sense to me...

Seriously....WHAT is everyone's problem with Metallica and hating them and their legions of fans this much anyway....

I see plenty of people here who also don't like it. Sure I like the casual Iron Maiden songs and I like some King Diamond and Saxon now and then but I never listen to it on a constant basis.

Well it comes a bit late, but I would like to thank the Metalstorm staff for another great awards event. I usually dont have enough time and patience to search for new good releases and bands, so having good releases listed up and provided with myspace link is very highly appreciated.

Still I am amazed that people are still surprised when popular bands (or bands with good fabase control) win. Hasent this always been like this? Well i voted in two categories (hadent heard enough in others) and I am happy that atleast someone agrees on Hexens release .
