Be it Movies, books, comics, games, music or whatever else you're into: Can Hype destroy it? A recent example for me would be True Blood. I hated it when I saw it due to the massive amounts of hype surrounding it. I watched it again the other day though, and adored it. I think it's the constant mention of its name just got to me, and every one saying how good it was, didnt really allow me to form my own opinion. Then again, some films I know theres a massive amount of hype surrounding and I still adore it, like Dark Knight, Kick Ass, etc. So what is your opinion on this topic?

I listen to and watch what I want and decide for myself what I think of it. I could care less if people think I'm cool (or not cool) because the music I like is more extreme or underground or the movies I like are less mainstream - or just the opposite; if people think I'm cool for listening to all the popular songs on the radio and only enjoying movies like Twilight.

I know for a fact a lot of people allow the majority vote to rule their own opinion. To be honest I enjoy when I find myself sitting outside the circle. But I don't go out of my way to do it, nor do I pretend to.

Excellent topic by the way.

Hype kinda wrecked Super Mario 64 for me, I was expecting an epic sprawling adventure rather than, well, what it is. Still a great game though. Zelda: Ocarina of Time fulfilled that epic adventure hype though, that along with FF7 were the most hyped games ever for me and they both met and exceeded expectations. Hype doesn't have much of an influence on me anymore as I'm not as young I guess. Bar perhaps the Mass Effect games.

I think I enjoyed Ocarina of Time because it was so hyped, and it still managed to shatter my expectations.

I never expect anything to live up to the hype, which results in some pleasant surprises every now and then. FFVII, Ocarina Of Time (minus that stupid water temple), Donnie Darko, The Fellowship Of The Ring, Baldur's Gate II, The Human Equation, OK Computer, The Seventh Seal by Ingrid Burgerman, The Foundation Trilogy are some examples of works of art that have surpassed the hype IMO. I am not really disappointed when something doesn't live up the hype (The Dark Knight, Avatar, The Dark Knight, Avatar and The Dark Knight), because it gives me a chance to criticize things and piss off all of my friends.

Only things I hype myself usually end up a disappointment.

The Seventh Seal is excellent, although it's pretty old so I wouldn't really say it's hyped up. If something has been around for a while and is still held in high regard that's because it has genuine quality.

A lot of the things that are surrounded by hype these days will be looked back upon in 10 or 20 years and looked down upon for the pure cack that they are. Game of Thrones gets talked up a lot, with people saying ridiculous things like "As good as Tolkein" and "Best fantasy ever". Really? Nope, I'm sorry, but it's nowhere near that good.

We're constantly being told this film or that film is going to be great, when I don't think I've been to the cinema to see a film in the last ten years that actually moved me or made me feel something, like a great film should. In fact it seems that in the last decade, hype surrounding things has increased, and continues to increase, to the point where nothing will ever be able to live up to it's own hype.

Meh. i mostly disregard hype aside from "it's good" or "it's bad" - doesn't much matter to me if smoeone calls it the best show/game ever... i store it as "good" and wait to see/decide for myself.

Yeah I rarely think hype can destroy something for me. If something gets hyped and then turns out to be bad, it's probably bad because it's bad, not because it was hyped. That being said I do pay attention to hype, well a lot of it anyways (an example of hype I would disregard is the Twilight films).

My friend and I had a bad habit of seriously hyping films up to each other. He hated Shaun of the Dead because for about three weeks I consistently told him it was the best movie ever. And he did the same thing for me with The Illusionist.

Hype is irelevant for me, I don't really pay attention to it, whats more relevant is who says what.
For instance If one of my trustworthy friends says a movie is good, it likely is. However if a fairly random acquaintance praises a movie it usually sucks.
I suppose this also has to do with the friend knowing my taste, and hence not recommending me twilight etc.
Most people watch shitty movies, play shitty games, and listen to shitty music.
This might make me sound like an elitist misanthropic bastard, and I couldn't give a larger shit.
