Here's the place to discuss the results, but keep in mind: these are the results of YOUR votes.

I am surprised that nobody asked this, but why was Korpiklaani not on the folk metal nominees?

Because re-releases don't count, they've been re-releasing the same album for 9 years now.

If this forum was Mortal Kombat... Your post would be a brutality!

It just not true. Korpiklaani has changed a lot with every album. I don't know what he's talking about..

Just added them. Of the 18 subgenre categories 12 were different from the ones chosen by the users. So those have a separate marking now. The other 6 (where somehow staff and users agreed ) Still have one marking but have the extra words (And Staff Pick) there

yeah, you cannot tell it's the same band from release to release they've journeyed so far from their humble origins.

You didn't add a staff pick for Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast.

By the way, I listened to Protest The Hero - Fortress, and I wonder whether Iconoclast is really better to have been chosen over it. I am gonna find out now.

I saw, I've also noticed you opened a suggestions thread already...let the shit-show begin. Though the thread will be empty because Opeth isn't releasing anything this year to the (best of my knowledge).

well, that and each post is going to be annihilated once the release info is incorporated into the first post. it should evolve into an absurdly long list of an opening post.

but i'm sure people will still find a way to nominate opeth for something in there anyways.

Ok, maybe I missed this and I'll probably feel really dumb once my question is answered, but on the awards page, if the album is written in green font, what does that mean?

I liked the Staff picks a lot more than the general public's. Enforcer and grand magus destroy metallica. Same with enslaved destroying opeth's latest release, although Opeth is still one of my favorite bands.

I still don't know why Toxic Holocaust OR equilibrium didn't win anything. Eluveitie???? C'MMMMOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNN.

Nah, better to ask for clarification then jump up and down screaming that the album you voted for won and everyone else is wrong, like, oh, certain other posters did, even AFTER it had been pointed out to them...

Toxic Holocaust didn't win because there were more good albums in some categories than awards to dole out. Leviathan, Isole, Forest of Stars, Nachtmystium, Gorath, Gama Bomb, and Skepticism all released some great albums - better, in my bitter opinion than many winners - and walked away empty ended. Oh well. At least on MS they got nominated and some publicity for their fantastic work.

Yes, but bands like Leviathan and Nachtmystium were recognized as top albums of the year from magazines like Terrorizer and Decibel. My point being, that many people voting on HERE probably only heard 1 or 2 albums from each catagory...thus the most popular or best selling albums were automatically winners.

Don't get me wrong I like the voting, but I put more trust in the staff because they probably hear more releases. The New Judas Priest wasn't as good as Grand Magus or Enforcer, and the staff saw that.

I did love A Forest of Stars by the way...I have been listening to it constantly. I voted for it as the best debut...but another good band won.

We've been through this and here is what Promonex said:
Written by Promonex on 01.03.2009 at 05:40

It IS just a popularity contest and the results are as predictable as always. The sense behind this all is that per nomination we lift unknown bands onto the same level as the well-known ones, so that people might consider giving the unknown ones a try before voting. Most people are too lazy to check some of the contestants and will just go for what they know, some others however will give plenty of bands a listen before placing their final judgement. Thus even if the results are crap, at least we do achieve what we want to achieve: introducing our more devoted readers to the cream of the crop. And giving some extra exposure to those bands which deserve it.

But this year the staff have come up with this great suggestion system. Now we have the list of arguably the best albums of the year in each category, so people can already start checking them out and be ready to objectively vote in more categories at MS Awards '09.

P.S. Actually I just can't stop being happy for this novelty. I wonder who has come with up.

I agree completely. It is my second favorite year-end list only to the almighty TERRORIZER. I am very pissed at Decibel for putting Torche the number 1 album of year.

Ok PLEASE help me out then...sometimes I am a little slower with recognition. I grew up in South Florida and remember seeing Tyranny of Shaw (members of Torche) play. Like the singer would bang on the drumset, they had like minimalist breakdowns, and worst of all there were like cocoa puffs all over the fucking floor and it was really slippery. But really, what elements from Torche should I look for? What makes it good? I want some convincing arguments...at least that get me to listen to the CD again.

Esoteric blew most albums last year out of the fucking water...good choice.

@Konrad... yeah, definitely looking forward to Microcosmos.

By the way, I can't believe that Iconoclast (by the way, Marcel, the marking hasn't been added yet) won the Metalcore category (both according to the users' vote and the staff vote). Protest The Hero - Fortress was so much better; it's just brilliant. It is a modern classic I'd say although their masterpiece is yet to come.

Tyranny of Shaw doesn't really matter, but I want to know what elements I should look out for when I listen to this album again. Also, I REALLY enjoyed the new withered album. I saw this was classified on metalstorm as "stoner" but I would have never thought that. I really don't know anything about this Genre.

I don't regard Withered as stoner at all, I would call that sludge. Same applies for bands such as Minsk, Buried Inside, a lot of Neurosis, Mastodon.

The thought never crossed my mind, so I must admit, It's a good idea. Still, it's dubitably unfair, or at least it enhances unfairness. It seems that some members cast decisive votes in favor of their favorite bands or for albums they didn't even listen to, take Darkthrone's "Dark Thrones and Black Flags" for example, I was speechless when I saw this album topping the poll, It's a valuable one I confess but doesn't deserve to win the award.

Another thing, and this concerns mostly the staff(especially those who manage the awards). It seems like some of you guys (with all due respect) have some problems with categorization.

I think next year the staff should do a top 40. Who cares about what WE think. They obviously picked out the albums that we voted on for the most part. Why not just do a comprehensive list.
