Well, I've been looking in the forum, but I couldn't find a topic like this one. Now that I finally got my 100 posts, I can create it . (Hope it wont be locked or deleted though).

I'd like to know when you guys have started to like metal. I think it reveals many things about people's personality, as in my opinion, Metal is not a kind of music you can listen to "by chance". I think there is a kind of... evolution, which eventually makes you listen to this music.

Personally, I started being into Metal only 3 years ago, in 2003, (which is kinda late,) thanks to Rammstein, I was about 14, but even then, I was more into Industrial and Rock. Even if I've been raised with a big brother who used to listen to classic Metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Metallica for instance, I've never thought I would regard myself as a "metalhead" one day.

I guess I wasn't mature enough to understand what Metal could really mean. But we all grow up. I've never really had a "happy" life, and I found in Metal things that helped me much. There were feelings I couldn't name, and Metal enabled me to understand more things about my own life and about people in general.
I think I wouldn't have started listening to this kind of music if I wasn't forced to leave the place I had been living in for years, for the second time. That special event, when I had to move and leave everything behind, made me start listening to Metal. And now i know i cant live without it.

Its your turn now , I'd like to know how and when you started listening to Metal. It might be really interesting I think, and I'm sure there is a lot to say .

I grew up in the '90s with a step brother who is 7 years older than me. He introduced me to the world of metal, and my journey continued when I got my first guitar when I was 10.

Saw the video of Ich Will from Rammstein. Bought the Mutter and Sehnsucht albums some weeks later. Later I discovered Children Of Bodom and Nightwish, thanks to them my music taste changed. Think I was 14 -15 years old back then. I really don't know why metal became my favourite music. Probarly because of the agression, atmosphere and the strong feelings.

hm ... since i started to listen to "real" music back when i was 12 or 13, i've always listened to nearly all kinds of music.
and i still do ... otherwise it would be boring ... i don't understand this narrow-minded thinking of the most metalheads, sayin' black metal -or whatever- is the only kind of music for example
don't get me wrong please ... i hope you know what i mean

Good for you, same here! I stopped paying attention to MTV after the cable company ripped the channel off of our TV, and I questioned the genuinity (if that is even a word) of the stuff they were putting on that channel. So, I started finding other types of music that would suit my liking. Then, I found bands like Within Temptation and Cradle of Filth, and damn was I pleased.

I think I always had an inclination to metal, since i was a child, and i didn't know what metal was.
I was 12 years, and i listened to Evanescence. Ok, they're not metal, but they were different from italian singers (like Tiziano Ferro, Gigi D'alessio...Do you know them?), they played the most "extreme" music that i was able to listen to.
Then a friend, when i was 14 made me listen "Running up that hill", a remake by Within Temptation. This friend after a couple of day disappeard. So i thinked it was destiny. He was someone instructed to give me the start.
And i started to listen to easy bands like within temptation and avenged sevenfol (sigh)
And now i'm here.^^

I got into the real stuff when Listened to my brothers Slayer, and In Flames Cds. From there the sky was the limit and I got into Death, Black and more progressive things like Opeth.

Well I started to listen metal music when I was 13 (8 years ago). One day while I was listening to radio and waiting for a radio show on which they played half an hour of one band to tape it(mostly the music I listened then-some pop or smth like that) I heard-and taped some different music:3 songs which I really liked and which I listened like 1000 times in next few days.Later I met a guy who was listening to metal and he told me that it was Metallica and the songs were Master of Puppets,Of wolf and a Man and No Leaf Clover, and that he can give me more music like that if I would like to listen.I said why not and next day he gave me more Metallica stuff,Helloween's Master of the Rings and all albums of Iron Maiden, and I liked it a lot and thats how I started to listen metal.

I started with listening to Lou Bega, kinda happy music, then i started to listen to heavier and heavier music. Now I mostly listen to Death and Black Metal only. Hm all the bands before the first Black Metal song I've heard was from my brother, then some sent me Dark Funereal - Satanic Blood (Von Cover) and after that I gave up all the music I was listening to and started to listen to Black Metal only. Then I discovered Death Metal and Grindcore. I still love that song... Satanic Blood

I stumbled on it by finding my dads Ozzy album (think it was ozmosis) which I loved, when I was about 15. Didn't really listen to much because I knew nothing about music and I had no idea who the hell Ozzy was, I just had an album with a few pictures of him in it. Then at 17 I started talking to a few guys at school who told me more about Ozzys albums, and including Black Sabbath. They lent me a few albums, and later reccomended me more similar bands. And it started from there, I went through some nu-metal on the way (we all start from somewhere), but in the end I found that I loved thrash, along with quite a few other genres.

I'll try to think and remember. when I was younger and before go to school my father used to play Greek Rock in his car at the vacations. I loved it but never searched more. later at MTV with Hip Hop first and later Nu Metal bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit were my favourite so I started searching more in stores and actually buy them. I still have their cds original! after school I got into more extreme metal, starting with Arch Enemy and Cradle of Filth till rotten uber shit like Enbilulugugal for example...nowadays I'm tired of the metal and especially black metal scene, still listening offcourse but not all these crap that every kiddo can release. rarely I'm trying new bands, and mostly orthodox / religious black metal and industrial black metal.

My parents always listened to stuff like Metal Church, Piledriver, Judas Priest, Metallica, Savatage and other stuff like that so I always liked classic metal stuff. When I was in middle school I started liking radio metal/rock (Korn, Disturbed, Stone Sour and that kinda crap). Not long after that I picked up a complition CD someplace that had a Slayer song (Here Comes the Pain) and fell in love with it and set me on the path for what I listen to today.

For my 5th birthday, 5 years ago, my dad bought me Zeppelin's 4th album and Santana's greatest hits.
Then for my birthday he bought me Stevie Ray Vaughan: Live Alive.
Then he bought me Rush's A Farewell to Kings

I really caught on with the rush.
I bought like half their albums and all of zeppelins.
Then I listened to a lot of other classic rock.

My uncle bought me back in black and highway to hell. Somehow I linked AC/DC to black sabbath, with all the hellish themes and such.

I got a Black Sabbath Greatest Hits.
Then I got Machine Head by Deep Purple.
Then I got Blizzard of Ozz.
Than I got Master of Puppetts.

Master of Puppetts made me a big Metallica fan.
From Metallica I started going back into NWOBHM, since I mistook bands like Pantera and Slayer for Hair Metal (somehow)
Then a friend corrected me that no, Slayer is not hair. I bought some Slayer.
Than I bought pretty much all the 'Classic' metal albums. Some Megadeth, some Metallica, some Slayer, some Motorhead.
Pretty much anything that was a small 'hit' in the metal world.

That's where I am now.
Still kind of uneducated. Standing in shallow water in the metal world.

I have a band. If you're curious it's myspace.com/hangar18kicksass

Shameless self advertising.

Well, i started listening to Metal when i was about 7 years old (1986)... My neighbour's older brother was listening to The Number of the Beast album in his bedroom while we were playing in the living room... I'll never forget that moment when i heart the 1st chords of TNotB. i just left my friend playing alone, threw away my Optimus Prime and when i got in his brother's room and checked the album cover... that was the coolest thing a 7 years old could ever think of!! Since then, i never looked back. Almost 22 years of love for Metal.

I started out listening to only hard rock and nu metal, then after I heard Clayman by In Flames, I started progressively getting into heaveir stuff (this was about 2 years ago). I was never happy listening to hard rock and nu metal bc there was always something heavier and thats what I wanted.

I started listening to metal for about 3-4 years ago, when I was 12-13 years old. My dad used to play music like Black Sabbath, Queen, and rock to hard rock in general, before and after I was born. If he didn't do that, I wouldn't be listening to metal today, and that I'm pretty sure about.
The same thing with my older sister, she eventually started listening to all those kind of bands like Guns'N'Roses, Alice in Chains etc. because of my fathers interest in such music. Now shes together with a metalguy, and he kinda dragged me into metal, since he listen to it, and plays death metal.
And as most people as far I've seen, I also started out with bands like Slipknot, System of a Down, and later I kind of "evolved" into other genres and heavier stuff, and then discovered a lot of great bands.
My life wouldn't be the same without metal, and I'm very grateful that they got me into metal.

Coming from a household that listens to stuff like Cliff Richard, Julio Iglesias and italian/french romantic singers of the 60's, my chances of ending up in Metal weren't so good.

Still, when I was around 13/14, my ears landed on an album that had just recently hit the charts: Nirvana's "Nevermind". That was the necessary 'click' to turn me to some heavier sounds. From then I moved to stuff like Guns n' Roses, Aerosmith and the sorts... An then one day I stumbled upon Metallica's Black Album, and I never was the same again. At age 15 I made 600Kms to see them live on my own and then I knew where I belonged: in Metal. No matter what detours I might've made a few years later, I soon returned 'home'.
No point in searching elsewhere, Metal's what I want. And I keep finding new things within it everyday.

Three years ago, I saw Megadeth on an episode of Duck Dodgers. Until then, I didn't know music could be that awesome. After that I started getting into Metallica, Testament, Black Sabbath, Early Metal. I only got into newer Metal when my friend showed me Children Of Bodom, then introduced me to Metalocalypse. Ever since then nothing seems to be heavy enough.

This is my first post on this forum so...Hi everybody!

I listened to very little popular music till I was 14 years old. Nobody else in my house really likes any popular music style. However, I used to play a lot of video games and I noticed that I liked nice aggressive-sounding tracks from the ambient music for various games (Command and Conquer games, mostly.) However, I can also remember that when our neighbors played really loud electric guitar music of any kind, it sounded annoying and insane at the same time. (Which is how our neighbors were). Starting at 12 I listened to classical music, then at 13 and 14 I listened to all kinds of oddball music (more classical as well as folk music, bagpipes & military music, film soundtracks, etc).

When I was 14 I bought a computer game called Operation Flashpoint and really enjoyed it. The soundtrack for the game was done in part by a group called Seventh, who played a kind of loud, gothic alternative rock. That was the first loud electric guitar rock music I listened to. One of their songs scared the living crap out of me when I first heard it (specifically "Lifeless" for anyone who's played that game). It took me several attempts at listening before I could get through hearing that song all the way. Then I liked it as well as the other Flashpoint songs.

(I'm getting there, guys, I just like to write...lol). Just before I turned 15 I started listening to the radio, downloaded a couple interesting songs from Itunes. They were mostly rap cause that's what everybody else liked. Couple months later two older friends got me interested in Rammstein. I liked them partly for the sound and partly because I was very interested in the German language at that time. (Is it just me or have quite a few people here gotten started on Rammstein?) And it seems like from there I just started to listen to various bits of harder and harder rock music. The same friends also liked Disturbed (nu metal band), so I picked them up too.

Bout nine months ago, when I was 16 (has it been that long?), I started listening to the radio again after a bit of a break. I liked a bunch of rock tunes, including some from Metallica. I noticed from surfing the internet that some people (more of the actual "rock music" types) liked Metallica's later work, but the older Metallica fans thought it was a sellout and their earlier stuff was better. That, plus hearing a little grindcore and metalcore music, got me interested in underground, speedy, extreme metal. I got interested in it around September last year, and I'm 17 now. I only own a couple albums (Itunes again) and most of my exposure comes from Internet radio, so I guess I'm a little n00bish.

So...I guess that should answer the question! lol

I got started in Metal back in the 80's, when I was about 14. I was really into hard rock at the time, especially bands like Rush And Van Halen. Quiet Riot came out then, and I kind of dug that - it took what I was listening to and kicked up the aggression a notch.
Now in my neck of the woods, we had a radio station called 97X -WOXY, which broadcast out of Oxford, OH. This was one of the last truly independent radio stations in the U.S., and has always been known for playing alternative and punk. (It now broadcasts as a web-only station.)
Anyhow, 97X had a weekly show on Saturday nights for three hours called "Massive Metal for the Masses." I happened upon it one night while listening to the radio in my room, and I was hooked immediately. There was all of this great music that I had never heard because it got no airplay - bands like Accept, Celtic Frost, Sacred Reich, Metallica, Slayer - bands that were doing what they were doing because they liked it, not because they thought it would sell. What an epiphany!
Also be aware that I was not exactly popular in high school, so this music that was being made without concern for whether or not anyone liked it naturally appealed to me.

When I was about 5-6 my dad would play Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, ZZ Top, CCR, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and various other hard rock bands on vinyl or me to listen to until I was about 8. For many years I just listened to whatever, not really finding something I loved since my parents divorced and I lived with my mom and she listens to pop and 70s music. Yeah.

When I was about 12-13 after being tired of not finding what I was really looking for and listening to the same three albums over and over again, I bought Metallica's Black album. Then I bought Master of Puppets. Then Ride the Lightning. Then Kill 'Em All. Then I listened to ...And Justice For All. I was hooked. I started to look up all the bands I knew but never really listened to (Slayer, Megadeth, Shadows Fall, Dream Theater, etc).

Almost eight years and a dozen shows later I've only grown to discover more bands and that I have a fondness of Thrash and Gothenburg metal. But I will always remember my roots in hardrock music, Metallica, and most important of all, Black Sabbath.
