M'kay. I've successfully made this argument in the past, so we'll see how it goes here. Slayer - "Seasons In The Abyss" If you stop and think about it, this song is technically a power ballad.

Scorpions: Well, they are the metal band more recognised as regards ballads. Even my father sings "Still loving you". My choice is, however, "When the smoke is going down" from "Blackout". I have always love that song. I need also mentioning "In Trance". W.A.S.P. Sleeping in the fire from its debut. Fantastic. Skid Row: I could choose any of the 3 great ballads in "Slave to the Grind". They are "In a darkened room", "Quicksand Jesus" and "Wasted Time" Dokken: "Alone Again" from "Tooth and Nail". A great example of the classic heavy metal ballad structure. It is so perfect that you can believe it. Judas: "Before the Dawn", "Angel", "Beyond the realms of death" Metal Church: They have great ballads and quite melodic for a Thrash metal band: Gods of Wrath, In Mourning, but my favourite is "In Harm's Way" and to finish, "Remember Tomorrow" -Anathema for those that don't know which band it belongs to-

@ Yossarian: very fine choices. Mostly. Well here goes another round: Malteze - Rain (Count Your Blessings) This is one thrilling semi-ballad by an all but unknown 80s US metal band, possibly my favourite ballad from the genre. Singer Barbara Maltese delivers her vocals with both incredible feeling and a masculine punch. Add a thoughtful and focused arrangement and a tight performance and you end up with a real killer. Def Lepard - Hysteria (Hysteria) I'm not ashamed to admit that I like this. Love it, in fact. And the band is here, the album is here and song is here so don't tell me it ain't a metal ballad. This song is just as sugary as the more well known "Love Bites" but it thankfully lacks all the awful kitch. What really made me fall in love with the song is the four-note backing riff of the chorus. Lääz Rockit - Spared From The Fire (No Stranger To Danger) This lists candidate for a thrash metal ballad. Well okay, there is little chance at mistaking this for thrash, but it's nevertheless great. A finely executed early 80s semi-ballad, Michael Coons doesn't yell his ass off for once and the riffing displays Lääz Rockit's trademark catchiness. The song is the highlight when compared to the brash swagger of the remaining tracks. Death SS - Way To Power (Heavy Demons) Labelling this band isn't too easy but for what it's worth, most of the album could be called gloomy 80s metal. The main riff from "Way To Power" is used twice on the album and once you've heard it you know why. If you are more interested in a song that takes the riff into a heavier direction, try "Family Vault". Desolation Angels - While The Flame Still Burns (Feels Like Thunder) One of the many NWOBHM bands that you'd wish had more luck and recognition. Classy, clean strung verses are followed by a heavy, almost thrashy refrain with great leads that make a good ballad exceptional. Band belongs on metalstorm, just like Malteze.

I guess I'm fond of prog metal ballads (if there is such a thing) but a few hair bands in the '80s made some catchy/cheesy ballads too: Fates Warning - The Road Goes on Forever Opeth - Isolation Years Riverside - In Two Minds Slaughter - Fly to the Angels Winger - Headed for a Heartbreak Skid Row - I Remember You

I'm so surprised no-one mentioned Savatage's If I Go Away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWZmdjjDncw not quite as incredible as Fiddler On The Green(it would be a sin for Jon Schaffer or Blind Guardian never to play that in concert) but definitely emotional, i love how Jon Oliva can go from normal singing voice to almost black metal to Halford-style screaming. awesome. also, Scorpions are probably the rock/metal band with the best ballads. it's quantity and quality combined: Holiday, Still Loving You(the Wacken video is just epic), and of course Wind of Change.

Account deleted Written by DayFly on 14.05.2009 at 20:42 D'oh! I apologize for the delay in responding, Day Fly. I got distracted by life. Anyhoo, my thesis is that "Seasons In The Abyss" is technically a power ballad. It has the elements of a power ballad. - proportionally mellower introduction - clean channel guitar parts with note picking around the chords - quiet/loud/quiet format - gradual build up to the "rocking out" part - insanely catchy chorus - mainstream accessability The only difference is that there is no singing over the quiet/clean part and it's not a love song. Thus, one may ask, "Must vocals be sung on the quiet/clean part of the song, and must the subject matter deal exclusively with some facet of love to officially be a power ballad?" Granted, this is SLAYER we're talking about, so a SLAYER power ballad would sound nothing like a REO Speedwagon power ballad. Still, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck.... brother, it's a duck.
