Girls rock when they aren't used as gimmicks, like slutting it up in every band promo photo or music video. Women are sometimes used by record labels because they know "sex sells" and then you are left with the musical credibility of a pop princess. However, Anneke makes me weak in the knees...

Women can definitely rock! I have no issue with them using their sexuality in the confines of the band so long as they're comfortable with it and are doing it under their own volition. As for the male groupie question.....absolutely there are male groupie's!! How could there not? More women are moving into metal/rock all the time. Not only are they incredibly talented but they're gorgeous. Plus, just the fact that they're in metal/rock makes them hot anyway. I just want women to be seen for their talent first and foremost. That's my prerequisite.

I have to thank girls in metal/rock for bringing me into the scene. At the time I could not stand grunts/growls and was annoyed by the high-pitched vocals of power metal. But I was enthralled by the angelic voices of for example Tarja, Shannon or Simone, which made me listen to their melodic metal and appreciate the heavier kind of music. So, thank you Girls!

Listen to Madder Mortem's music. That's a woman with guts and a voice that's strong and rough.
I really don't like music like Nightwish, Sirenia, Within Temptation .. Need more attitude than that.

there are many women in awesome bands: acid king, electric wizard (the most beautiful woman i've ever seen), end of level boss, arch enemy, fireball ministry or the davolinas ... to mention some.

but this nightwish and within temptationthing has IMO nothing to do with "girls who rock", it's just some "gothic"-like girl who sing and ... dunno ... i can't cope with it.

And what about Gellhammer? They play good black metal.
Or Octavia Sperati, Astarte too.
Bands like them can actually kick the ass of many metal bands in which play only men.

the only reason i dont like them fronting a band is cause then the band is usually melodic metal which im not into but still thats cool.
its better when the girls play guitar or bass.

Girls can rock , but for the labels to sell melodic music they are not gonna put on the cover a guy that spits blood and is wearing a military uniform , the labels are making the difference , not the listeners.
Plus , Nightwish has 4 guys and 1 girl , that means that for one girl that doesn't rock there are 4 guys who don't rock.

I really couldn't care about this whole fuss over the lack of females as fans or musicians in metal.

Girls have fingers and yes they can rock look at Evanesence they are pretty freakin good and besides when girls rock, it sells because people like to see women doing those kinds of things

i totally agree! some female fronted bands are just rubbish, they aren't heavy enough and they are all melodic and shit like that. i crave the day when there is a band with a frontwoman who rocks as hard as any man!

Once they start drawing attention to it (a female member) it becomes a gimmick. (Nightwish and similar)

Other than that, I don't see why musical expression should be gender divisive.

It's when fans comment on the lead singers appearance more than the music itself it may as well be a boyband/girlgroup. And by their own fault or not a lot of female fronted metal bands seem to fall under this category to some extent.

There are obviously also cases where a female member has completely injected life into a band, and it's good becuse of their skilful (and not visual) contribution (Elisa C Martins work with Fairyland and Dark Moor spring to mind.)

Maybe I'm just biased cause I hate operatic vocals though :/ Male fans of stuff like Lacuna Coil will mention the singers appearance over the music pretty much every time from my experience. It gives a bad impression.

I'm a fan of female-fronted metal, but I tend to be extremely picky in regards to what I listen to. I don't care much for Lacuna Coil or Within Temptation for example, but love bands such as Nightwish, After Forever and Epica.

Also.. for those who want a heavier female-fronted band to listen to, try Australia's Antonamasia.

Some of their stuff is black metal, but I wouldn't call it good.

As for this thread, girls know to rock as well as boys. Just look at Angelina Gossow. I was actually considering a female vocalist to our band, but it's hard to find a person who has same kind of musical interests, so we kept up in one mate who is at least a decent guy. The only thing that bother's me in girls rocking is female drummers, I just hate to see that they could actually be better than me.

This is what happens when people get too carried away with the gimmicks. Angela isn't a good example of a girl rocking, because all she does is sing, and uses effects at that.

Lori Linstruth gives me hope for the future of women in metal, not just as the voices and pretty faces of bands, but actually part of a band where image is nothing, and talent is everything.

There is a mexican BM band that used to consist only on woman. I believe they now got some guy's playing bass and drum, but I'm not sure (who could tell the difference anyway;)...), but they are absolutely rocking. I know that there are better BM bands, but who cares, i'd rather watch rocking girls.

I love watching chicks specially rocking out. Sinergy is a female fronted band and they're one of my favorite bands. some of the notes they hit sound simply beautiful something a man cant do. at least in my opinion, I've never thought a man sounded beautiful. The only thing I don't like is when chicks get into the pit because I have to watch out not to hurt them, even though some of those chicks get fucking crazy and could probably fuck me up. I support females though they can do the same exact shit as males, and when I was in the Army 1SG told us its been Scientifically proven that women can tolerate more pain than a males.

AE and Angela, I like only AE whit male vocalist, after he left band are not so good and people attend to gigs becaus eof her not music
