Spent a few hours now on Darkest Dungeon. etc

Hahaha and I just opened this thread to post something about Darkest Dungeon... seems like it's quite unbalanced from what you say. As I am not interested at all in trying "early access" games, I'll patiently wait until they balance it up. I really have high hopes for it too.

In other news, Ultima Underworld 2's official sequel is getting a kickstarter as I write this... *cries*

Had a nostalgic saturday remembering how awesome Mega Man x4 is. Damn I used to be good in that game, I lost the touch.

Also remembering how uplifting this little theme is.

Currently doing a nostalgia run of Neverwinter Nights + expansions... Great stuff.

The last really great game I played was The Witcher 3. Bought Fallout 4 when it was released but I think that will be the last time I ever give money to Bethesda. Uninspired world filled with plastic, lifeless characters as usual.

Funnily enough, I don't think I ever finished any of the three campaigns, and yet NWN is one of my most-played games ever (maybe -the- most played, though League of Legends may have overtaken it) thanks to the amazing multiplayer possibilities. It isn't until now, with the upcoming release of Shards Online, that a viable competitor for privately-hosted custom persistent worlds (for role-playing) is being made. (Incidentally, I am writing lore for a server some of my NWN-buddies are making for Shards.)

I didn't make much of any of the NWN series campaigns except Mask of the Betrayer. That stuff is better than Baldur's Gate - or would be if you could actually build and control a party.

Yeah the campaigns are pretty light on the role-playing but great fun to run through imo. I also spent a lot of time on the NWN persistent worlds back in the days, I think the one I spent most of my time on was called "Land of Destiny" or something like that.

Well, NWN2 and Mask of the Betrayer was made by Obsidian and not Bioware, which explains why the story is actually gripping instead of just an excuse to kill stuff. Keep in mind Obsidian were the same guys who made Planescape: Torment... The 2nd NWN2 expansion, Storm of Zehir, brought back the Icewind Dale-style of pre-game party building and was great fun as well.

I probably like NWN2 better than the original but nostalgia can sometimes be hard to beat

XCOM 2.

Buggy as fuck. Honestly some of the worst performance I've experienced in a game for a while and have had to turn down all settings a notch as a result. It's not exactly a technically amazing game either, although it's not exactly bad looking.

Modded away the constant countdown turn timer on 80% of the missions, so now I can play it like an XCOM game. It was a tad too difficult at first before I realised that upgrading weapons and armour affects all characters' default gear. After that, and realising the importance of making contacts, the game got a little easier. On the whole I'm much preferring XCOM: Enemy Within / Unknown. Just has more charm to it, and things feel like they work a lot better, particularly the aiming angles. The RND aspect seems a little better in XCOM 2 though. It's fine though.

I once almost played through the NWN2 OC, but I lost all saves due to computer failure, never managed to ever bring myself to play it again. I found the campaign intriguing (even the OC, it might be generic, but I have a feeling that it was pretty much intended as a parody of fantasy fiction, and it works pretty well like that), but the usual real-time with pause combat along with the most terrible camera control I have ever seen, with some gamebreaking bugs made me really despise the gameplay.

I never played the first NWN game, but I hear Hordes of the Underdark might be worth checking out?

Hordes of the Underdark is a nice dungeon crawler. And NWN camera control is much better than NWN2. It depends on what you play (a wizard with a lot of metamagic prepared may be too much), but since you only control a single character you don't really need to use pause once you organise your quickslots efficiently.

I just love the character building in both games. It has a lot of room for creativity and clever concepts, although it takes a little research if you're not familiar with 3/3.5E D&D. Not that it really matters in single-player.

My favorite character was/is a cleric/monk (24/6) priest of Oghma, a quarterstaff-wielding, unarmored geek. It used to work a lot better until my PW capped Monk AC bonus from Wis modifier to monk levels (so only 6 free AC instead of, like, 12) and removed the bonus attacks-per-round from Divine Power (a spell that vanilla gives bonus BASE Attack Bonus but was changed to give a magical bonus), but I got some of the oomph back when they made Quarterstaff work with Monk's higher attack-per-round progression. It wasn't a great build (would have been much stronger with kamas and Dex-base) but I wanted to play a Friar Tuck -type of character and made it work. (Yeah, I've played it a bit. >_>)

I feel the same thing for Fallout 4. I bought into the hype and I actually enjoyed Fallout 3 but for some reason I just don't as invested in this latest Fallout game. It just feels more like a choir trying to play through it.

Currently I'm playing Final Fantasy 10. I essentially got to the end of the game years ago but never saw the ending or beat the final boss.

Firewatch. Absolutely loved it tbh. It sort of gave me the same feels as I got with Kentucky Route Zero, and ended up playing it in one session. Not really for anyone expecting deep gameplay, as it's a glorified walking simulator, but the writing and voice acting are absolutely second to none. The ending probably wasn't what I'd hoped but it wrapped things up more or less, unlike what others would have people believe. Great visuals too.

About 50 / 60 percent through GTA V too. Started it briefly last year but my graphics card wasn't as good as I would have liked it to be at the time. Probably the most technically accomplished game I've ever seen. The visual detail is mindboggling; not surprised it's the most expensive game ever made (by quite a ridiculous margin it seems, when you don't include marketing). It's pretty fun too, although I have to push through the perpetual cognitive dissonance of having to play as 3 unpleasant people (of varying degrees). Wasn't overly keen on the torture scene. Beats the frankly deficient GTA IV, hands down.

Have also put about 6 hours into Stardew Valley. Not exactly heavily into farming / social simulator type games but it's quite addictive stuff.

Might break into Life Is Strange too at some point. Firewatch has given me a taste for narrative-based games as of late.

I'm playing a bunch of games on and off, none of them really grabbing me.

Dying Light. Meh, mediocre. I've spent way too many hours grinding, but the game just gets more unsatisfying the more I progress - and yet it's strangely compelling. It could be a great game, but it isn't.

Company of Heroes. Pretty good! Not a fan of RTS in general, but I like the scope, variety and story focus of these missions, and there's not too much micro.

Shadowrun Returns. Straightforward and clearly not as good as Dragonfall, but I'm actually happy to play a quick and simple campaign with decent writing. Scope and complexity is something that has begun to annoy me about many great RPGs: I simply don't have time for 100 hours of Lords of Xulima, the five Geneforge games 30-50 hours each, the Gothic series or whatever else on my to-play list.

Fallout: New Vegas. Struggling to get into it. I can see the appeal and there is some good stuff, but the world is so empty, the combat so lame, the hiking so boring that it struggles to engage me. For some reason it gives me a headache, so I can't play long enough for it to really suck me in, so that's probably part of the reason. One of those frustrating games I know I'd probably really like if I could get past the obstacles.

I enjoyed that game, was a backer. Still have my "Doc Wagon" card.

A friend of mine apparently backed them at a higher level than i did... was doing a pc search for a clue in game and saw a list of names, including one i recognized. e'd him and he confirmed it was him.

Low tech game, but a lot of fun. And a lot less complicated than rolling two fistfuls of potentially exploding six sided dice and going through the whole hit process of the P&P game.

So, not as good as Arkham City, then?

Yeah I loved Arkham Asylum. Like a proper 3D Metroidvania that one. Couldn't get into Arkham City though due to the open worldness of it which I thought lacked much of the atmosphere and cool design of City, although I'm sure it's very good.

Arkham City improved on many aspects, adding cool moves and gadgets and shit, but I agree that Asylum was the better environment. Much of the City was just bland and irrelevant and in opening so many routes and freedom of choice, it did not really offer any meaningful choices and challenges (as far as map design goes). There is a place for free-roaming open areas, but most of the time they detract from the pacing. I find it hilarious that Arkham City was praised specifically for its great open world, as if that was an end in itself.

I've only played City, took a fair while to finish the story because I would play it for a few days, then not at all for weeks. Also I'd get stuck trying to figure out which of Batman's dozen or so toys is needed to get past something. Anyone else think it was just Escape From New York with Batman replacing Snake Plissken?

Halfway through Bayonetta. Top tier stuff and quite difficult. Combat is great. Tons of moves. Haven't tried out accessories but I've read they change up the gameplay quite a bit. Dodging is prioritized. Basically you can get through the game by button mashing but to get good scores you need to dish out some diverse combos. Bayonetta as a character is great. She's absurdly powerful and very sexy. Enemy designs are really creative too. Definitely the best spectacle fighter i've played. Should mention that the framerate is a bit iffy during cutscenes on the Ps3 version. Platinum Games shows us again why they're somewhere in the Top 3 best current game devs.

Bayonetta is amazing. The combat system was so fun yet so expansive and deep (I hated the rocket level though). I had the pleasure to play the Xbox 360 version thankfully. It's too bad Bayonetta 2 is on the Wii U; I would really love to play it but 3 or four games isn't enough for to go and buy the Wii U.

currently playing through KoToR at the moment. really enjoying but some reason it just crashes now and then. It's quite frustrating when you forgotten to save. I'm hoping to buy Dark Souls 3 as soon as I get payed but I think should cool it with the games until I have completed college.

Playing Gothic 1 now, it is a slow start and gameplay/control scheme is rather off-putting, but I've heard too many good things to give up (and also since I bought the trilogy and want to try the second one too).

Also, don't laugh, but I just played through Half-Life for the first time. I played it around the early 00s for the first time, but wasn't into it and didn't get very far. I finished it pretty quickly now, but it was a bit of a let-down after all the hype. The best game ever, really? Deux Ex, System Shock 2 and Thief were all better games, IMO, and that's only accounting for first-person games from the same era. Game was linear as fuck, no story reason to push on like you do - you only get where you're going by several convenient, unpredictable accidents (like falling from a pipe into the exact corridor you need to get to, although you had no reason to be in that pipe in the first place), and it wasn't really challenging. But it was a fun, captivating ride nonetheless. Good but not stellar.
