I wonder how many people know Venus by Banarama is a cover or how many people know Tainted Love by Soft Cell is a cover. I am willing to bet that''s even more people than those not know I Love Rock ''n'' Roll was orignnally by The Arrows.

Okay so I kind've copped from the first listen that there was something different about this song to the rest of the album, but I didn't know it was a Tank cover. Might have to look into Tank now, cause this song fuckin' rocks!

"Broad Sword' by Turisas. I was thinking, wow, nice ballad, sounds so different that their other songs, then I read it's a Jethro Tull cover
Also, "The Wild Rover" is my favourite Týr song, and I didn't know for a long time that it's a traditional irish song.

I'm going to go with...

Katatonia - Nightmares By the Sea (Jeff Buckley)
Muse - Feeling Good (Anthony Newley) (bear in mind that my musical knowledge was very young when I found this out/I listened to Muse a lot)
In Vain - Wayphearing Stranger (traditional; also a misspelling)
Rammstein - Das Modell (Depeche Mode)
Mad Max - Fox On the Run (Sweet)

Let's leave it at that for now.

Oh wait, Stripped is the Depeche Mode cover. Sorry, I'm dumb and clearly can't deduce that the German song would be by the German band.

Just discovered that the song "X" by Spite Extreme Wing is a cover of one song of The Beatles

What can I do? Not exactly a Beatles follower. Also the song title beiing X doesn't leave that much trace.

Same thing for me, hadn't heard the original before this song so had no idea (it did sound a little off compared to the rest ). Great album anyway.

Another good one is Celtic Frost's Mexican Radio:

I dislike when bands simply copy the song they are covering without no significant changes (happens a lot when metal bands cover another metal band) but when they do something completely different it's really cool to compare both !

So is Layla the one good riff actually by Clapton, or did he steal that one too?

Be Easy on him, he probably has no clue of a band called Cream or The Yardbirds

I know he was the guitarist for Cream and The Yardbirds (as well as Derek and the Dominos and solo work), never really cared for either of them but I reconize their influence, but he is still the most overrated guitarist ever. The point I was making is that when ever someone says someone is technically more talented than him his fans go on about how is a better composer who plays with so much soul, but half of his well known songs are covers anyway, which is even more ironic because even though he is a racist bastard half of those songs were written by black people.

Anyway, to stay on topic, I didn't know Judas Priest's Diamonds and Rust was a cover at first.

I feel like your logic is somewhat flawed when it comes to your judgment of Clapton as pretty much every reason you give for thinking he's bad seems based on personal bias.

Over half of his well known songs are covers? Of his top 15 most-listened songs on last.fm, only 5 are covers (Knockin' on Heaven's Door, I Shot the Sheriff, Change the World, After Midnight, and Cocaine as previously mentioned). Not to mention the fact that folk music and covers kind of go hand-in-hand, especially when you're paying homage to someone you consider to be a significant influence on your musical career.

And of course he isn't the most technical guitarist in the world - I think most of his real fans would readily admit that (myself included). What Clapton lacks in terms of technicality, he more than makes up for in delivery, as you pointed out (even though you tried to make this seem like a con). He's far more renowned for his evocative playing style rather than his technical prowess.

And sure, he made some ill-advised comments about foreigners back in the '70s while drunk on stage... Do you really think everyone else from that time was as open-minded as we expect celebrities to be these days? Even if he is a full-blown racist, that has nothing to do with his standing as a legendary guitarist.

Sorry for the long off-topic response. Just thought I'd give my two cents since we clearly have much different views on this subject. I was going to respond to this and transfer it to the Eric Clapton thread but it seems nobody has made one yet. If you'd like to discuss this further it would at least be a good excuse to create a thread dedicated to one of rock's most iconic guitarists.
