Two years after the release date of their first demo in 2005, the Italian guys of Subliminal Fear finally released their first album "Uncoloured World Dying". If you use to listen to Gothenburg Death or even Metalcore I really think that you'll have to check this release which is maybe not the most innovative album of the year but which is solid nonetheless. Who know, maybe that Subliminal Fear will be able to conquer the saturated world of the trendy Gothenburg Death, they have the weapons to do it actually!
Definitely this first album is a good album. Even if the band has never released anything else than a little demo, it's obvious that the musical maturity of these young Italian dudes is really high. I even have to admit that this release doesn't suffer of any comparison with some masters of the genre like In Flames. Sure on one hand it's classic Gothenburg Death with all what you need to listen to while you're listening to it: catchy choruses, death vocals, hyper melodic riffs and strong lines of drums. But on the other hand even if it's all but original, this is a good release with nice songs like "Insane Archetype" or "Stare" and I'm sure that the people who were disappointed by the last In Flames will probably be a lot more inspired by "Uncoloured World Dying".
Though, if "Uncoloured World Dying" is a good promising album, its still suffers of little problems. First we have too many clean vocals (which even are a bit out of tune sometime?) which sound Metalcore and that's not so good. Also, the album is really cliché and doesn't have anything special on it. For sure it's well done and it's good songs in the genre but where is the originality here? I don't know? Really when I see the quality of this album I have the best hopes for Subliminal Fear because they're able to do something good with a really reheated recipe. If they're able to find a sound a bit more unique and add some personality in their future album, it should become a real hit. At least their first album is perfectly produced and feature good songs, it's just sad that it sounds like a ton of other releases of the genre?
"Uncoloured World Dying" is a good first try, not really original as you know but better than a ton of Gothenburg releases (including the last In Flames) that we've heard lately. If the band is able to confirm these words in the future I'm sure that we will see them on the roads across Europe but I hope that they will be able to add something new in their future writing or I'm afraid that we will forget them. Repetition is not so good as you know? Let's keep an eye on Subliminal Fear this band has a strong potential and don't forget to check their first album "Uncoloured World Dying" if you're looking for classic but good Gothenburg Death Metal.
