Unlike most people here, I can tolerate the shouts just fine; its the boy band worthy cleans that kill this album. Decent enough riffs, but those cleans... Gah, ear rape I remember back when I was first getting into metal and checking out the song "Dying in your arms", and thinking, "What the fuck, this is metal?" I do like the song rain though.

The only reason why most of you hate Trivium is because they aren't tr00 metal!1!!eleven or for another reason that has nothing to do with the quality of their music.
Its incredible how fucking close minded some "metalheads" are... Trivium could release the best metal album ever and a lot of "metalheads " would hate it simply because... Its Trivium.

This.
I remember being a n00b to metal, and listening to "Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr"
I still enjoy this from time to time.

I don't get it, if you hate Trivium so much, why post a review at all?
He posted the review, simply because he can. He's also a staff reviewer, so he gets sent review requests.

I guess the reviewer didn't listen to the album because he didn't mention any thing about it, he just give his opinion about trivium and that is wrong ...

Fucking hell man, its a decent album by a decent band. nothing revolutionary but its a solid set of tracks that you feel the need to hate simply because the band is popular. stop being such an elitist.

The reviewer hates the album, because it sucks. The fact that the album was released by a popular band is a coincidence.
Calling mainstream shit shit is not elitism. It is telling the truth. The only difference is who reads the review. When a reviewer slags off an obscure band, no Trivium lover will read it, hence they won't complain about the low rating.

id accept that if 90% of the album wasnt just slagging off the band rather than the music itself

Like it or not the band is the one that wrote the music. If the music is shit then it's not the music's fault

So here's my story: I was 16 when this album came out and I loved it to death, I listened the shit out of it, it was the greatest album of all times for me then. Then I started looking for similar bands, delved deeper into the metal scene, started listening to gotherburg melodeath (DT, ATG, older IF, Mors Principium Est) and extreme power (Cob, Kalmah etc.) then over the years I got through all the different genres from prog to grind. All of this caused me to retrospectively devaluate this album, I started thinking of it as shitty metalcore that most metalheads think of Trivium, their opinion started to influence my listening habits, and stopped listening to this band, because this was not true metal in my eyes anymore.
Then, something like, a year ago, I stumbled on them on Spotify, decided to give In Waves a listen. And in that moment I realized how much of an idiot I was for years. I missed out on so many incredible riffs and solos and choruses. Can't believe that Shogun has been out for 7 YEARS and in my ignorance, I missed it completely. So here I am listening to Ascendancy again, and it's fucking awesome.
The point I'm trying to get to: I know there's a lot of you out there like me, who love Trivium, but consider it a guilty pleasure to listen to, because "it's not metal enough" according to some "true metalheads".
Don't let others tell you what to listen to, because you might miss out on some truly awesome shit.

Your intro has absolutely zero to do with the substance of this album. Just more unhinged musical snobbery.

That's an apt intro and Trivium was no less than a Metallica-worshipping group delivered back-to-back poppy thrash hits.

Still no substance, just illogical ranting and baseless claims. I guess you do kind of hint at it in your user name. And instead of providing any substance you just double down on your snobbery, as if that's somehow supposed to be convincing. The funny thing about musical snobs is how they really are convinced that they are right about everything. Then you find out what they actually listen to and then proceed to belly laugh for a solid hour. Absolutely hilarious.

In Trivium case, you don't have to grind much. It's the single biggest band that plagarized Metallica and yet failed. It’s hysterical how the casual listener often confuses popularity with quality, but here in this case, Trivium have produced us a wonderful looking bags of pop hits with overly polished production and absolute formulaic songwriting(intro, verse, cacophony chorus, verse, breakdown, chorus)

Bingo. The review reeks of anecdotal snobbery with zero substance. Reminds me of a lot of the nonsense you see on Pitchfork.

May be, not aligning with your interests here, but for me this is the best analysis on Trivium one can ever have by one of our respected staff member.

Let me be clear: I totally understand that people don't like the record. I just don't agree with the reviewer's reasons as to why the album is "bad".
1. The reviewer claims that Trivium were just copying off of other artists. When this album came out, it sounded very fresh and different than a lot of other records at the time. I know a lot of close friends and metalheads who found it very novel and interesting. That's not the say it wasn't influenced by other bands, say Metallica, as an example.
2. The reviewer complains about monotony, but how many metal albums can you name that aren't in some ways monotonous? Monotonous doesn't necessarily imply bad. Opeth for example can play the same riff over and over but it actually works, and I think the catchy chorus on this album are memorable and something that brings you back.
3. The reviewer doubles down on claiming that Trivium sounds like ""Every other band" in the genre. Again, name one band at the time that sounded exactly like Trivium. There would have been some similarities maybe, but nothing identical.
4. The reviewer complains of using the same "Formula" to crank out every song. While the general structure of every song might be similar, every song is uniquely different with a different melody. Pulling Hard on the Strings of the Martyr is not identical to Ascendancy, they have a clear distinction.
5. The reviewer claims that people who enjoy this record have been "brainwashed by the media". Again, just flat out wrong. I know a lot of people, including myself, who happened to stumble on this record by chance, either through Myspace or some other sight without reading Kerrang or any other major metal media outlet. Our enjoyable of the album had nothing to do with what mainstream media was saying. In fact, to this day I have no clue what their opinion of this album would be, nor do I care.
This review is full of fallacies, snobbery, and lies. It's poorly written and it has little to no substance. You're totally allowed to dislike this album or Trivium, but at least provide a logical argument with valid reasons as to why you dislike the album.
