When I heard this album I began to feel homicidial tendencies toward Hansi Kursh. Why? Because his influences on Shaffer have ruined the perfect heavy style of early Iced Earth. In fact, since the "Demons and Wizards" project between the two musicians (which I see more as a Blind Guardian album with Shaffer playing guitar?) the mastermind of Iced Earth has been attracted by Blind Guardian's choral-melodic style.

Concept album based on horror movies, "Horror Show" is a very particular album in Iced Earth discography. First, it's the last studio album recorded with singer Matt Barlow if you don't count the box-set "Dark Genesis". Then, it's probably the most experimental and hence criticized effort of the band.

I love this album! It's probably tied with Burnt Offerings as my fave Iced Earth album. The concept is very kewl, and what is also great about it, is each song musically completely fits with the character and lyrics. What is ironic, is that Jon himself doesnt regard this album, or Burnt Offerings highly, yet they are my two faves! I never get bored of Horror Show, every time I listen to it, it rocks my socks off!

As far as i heard i think this might be their best album. I'm not a fan of the band as i think they are overrated compared to their fame but they are good. I don't know all their songs but i like a few songs from each album and this album sounds the best. Dracula is enough...

I loved the lyrical themes of this album!

Dracula and Ghost of Freedom were the highlights for me and are actually 2 of my fave songs of all time. Dracula being a Powerful and Epic masterpiece of a song and Ghost of Freedom a classic and evoking ballad.
As great as these songs are, the rest of the album is not at the same standard. Theres another few good tracks and then the rest is forgettable.

Wolf and Damien are much better than those, and I love the chorus of Jack.

You can tell Iced Earth had a lot of fun doing this album, yet whilst any band creating an album based solely on horror fiction runs the risk of being over-dramatic or cheesy, such is not the case with Horror Show. On the contrary, this sees the band once again performing consistently and the songwriting is as solid as ever, but there are some songs which bring about the wow factor for me. These are "Dracula" and "The Phantom Opera Ghost", the latter of which featuring a brilliant guest performance which is basically perfect placement alongside some of the best riff work known to exist in an Iced Earth album.

Have always loved "Dracula" a lot, but never thought the band would be able to pull it off with the same power live. Then I watched this:

Matt's not my favorite Iced Earth singer, but I might have to reconsider, since apparently he is some kind of vocal God. He seriously puts most live vocalists to shame.

EDIT: This one is obviously even better, especially the sound quality, but since it's from an official DVD I'm not sure how "live" everything is.

EDIT²: Also revisited the live version with Stu from Live In Ancient Kourion. Matt's performance is just so much more powerful. His high notes also just sound way more pleasing to my ears. I like Stu in general, but for "Dracula" Matt is undefeated.

Damien is among my all-time top 5 IE songs.
The rest of the album I dont enjoy very much, not bad though.
Their first three albums are much better IMO.

Mostly lackluster songwriting, mostly boring songs with tier 2 or 3 riffs and the drumming sounds dull. Wolf is closest to being a killer song, but the double bass drums are overdone. I don't think any of the songs are best IE material, not favorite material to me. The Iron Maiden cover sounds good, better than the original IMO, but as a cover and instrumental it doesn't work as a big saving grace. Barlow sounds good on vocals, as usual, but other than that, I can't write any more positives here.

First 6 albums are really good. Iced Earth should be my favourite band, I also still have most of physical albums from them. But only 6 good albums and maybe Dystopia is just not enough to make it the best band. And they actually don't have even one masterpiece album which could be in top 200 here.
So I always freeze when someone asks me what my favourite band is. I could say Iron Maiden or Metallica, but it's actually the same as with Iced Earth, only first albums are masterpieces.
So probably something from melodic death metal, or Death themselves, these bands have the most consistent discographies.
EDIT: OMG, I was just reading The Glorious Burden comments and I totally forgot Alive in Athens. Then I consider Iced Earth my favourite band.

The album has it's strengths, the performance is brilliant and the production is also sharp. But most of the songs don't go all the way for me even if I enjoy them. Damian, The Phantom Opera Ghost and Dracula are my favourites.
