A cover artwork (by Eliran Kantor) and a title that resemble to a modern version of Hieronymus Bosch. Yes, you guessed correctly, Sigh hail once again from the land of the rising sun, Japan, with another magnum opus in the vein of Hangman's Hymn, complexing the soundscape even more. It is not difficult to lose your destination whenever you incorporate many elements in your sound, yet these avant-gardists know every step they make and Scenes From Hell is another masterpiece that starts as a rock on "Prelude To The Oracle" and becomes rapidly an avalanche.

Avant-garde Black metal
Mar 12, 2010
It would be a surprise if this album wasn't weird. The Japanese band are back with yet another album of extremely strange, extreme metal. Quite avant-garde and in a few places slightly psychedelic, Sigh remain a band that are completely unique to metal. A fine addition to the band's repertoire.

The second half of the album is much better than the first. There's just too much saxophone in the first few songs for me.

Worst sigh album, as Baz said way too much saxophone usage, they try to be more avantgarde in this album but they fail at it. 7 at best.

Lots of saxophone and unusual instrumentation, but that isn't a negative. Great album.

Honestly, It's a pity that so many people are rating this so low because it's advante-garde. Personaly, i think the sax sounds more lime a horn (which is pretty weird when I think about it).

No...I would NOT really call this avant-garde, nor do they seem to try to be. The saxophones really supplement the music and they don't break any kind of barriers or experiment as much as other bands like Shining do. Yes, the saxophones really just enforce the melody and the vocals, which are splendid. It's an interesting step for Sigh, and I think it's a divisive strategy that will alienate some fans. For all it is, however, it's a decent record.

With this album Sigh built up on what they achieved with Hangman's Hymn. But this time Mirai decided to go all over the top with the epic sound. I guess, that over-usage of orchestration and wind instruments was off-putting for many listeners, but I still enjoy this album a lot. And, in my eyes, just for that arrangement of Chopin's Marche Funebre Scenes from Hell deserves a high score.

Completely agree and even though the brass and orchestral instrumentation are excessive here the metal parts and the overall nature of the songs are even darker and the orchestration sort of battle-cry/warfare oriented nature. This and Hangman's Hymn will probably remain my favourite of them.

Maybe I´m biased because I´m spanish, but I loved the trumpets and orchestration used here. They somehow remind me a lot of spanish traditional music. Mirai took those elements and make them fit perfectly on a black metal album that sounds dark, epic, beautiful and sometimes psychedelic. So so good.

I've always loved this album. It sounds like you took an old Looney Tunes matador cartoon and mixed it with black metal. Yes the mastering could be a bit better but overall it's one of my favorite Sigh albums.

Yo, thanks for bringing this to my attention! I'm listening to it right now and loving it! The only other Sigh albums I've listened to are Imaginary Sonicscape, Gallow's Gallery, and Shiki. I really liked those, but I feel like I need to be in the right mood to enjoy them. Anyway, I must be in the right mood now, because this is great. Symphonic avant-garde black metal. Who knew that Hell could sound this fun?

My friend, please check out their other releases, they're all worth your time.
Hangman's Hymn is their closest release to this one in terms of sound, only it doesn't have the bombastic brass instruments. It's still absolutely amazing though, and has some of the catchiest riffs and melodies in all of metal.
I would also like to say that Scenes From Hell is critically underrated and I'm glad you like it

Hell yeah! Been having it on repeat today. My favorite song is "The Red Funeral" - crazy good (and I'm pretty sure one melody appeared before on a song on Imaginary Sonicscape)
