Unanimated's debut album In The Forest Of The Dreaming Dead set the tone for their follow-up masterpiece, Ancient God Of Evil. Both albums contain melody, raw production, and excellent musicianship. That being said, Ancient God Of Evil surpasses anything the band have released with its catchy riffs and impaling guitar solos, not to mention a few other elements that were perfected since their debut.

It's a good album but not a classic yet. I can hear their intention - Play it safe !

Being not a fan of raw production, but a huge fan of the melodeath genre I consider this as one of the most historic and important albums. The highlights are:
01. Life Demise
02. Eye Of The Greyhound
03. Oceans Of Time
05. Mireille
07. Ruins

But if you ask me:

01. Life Demise
02. Oceans Of Time
03. the rest of this f*&%ing masterpiece

For those who think Dark Tranquillity and In Flames invented Melodeath and for those praising Dissection as the first band ever playing melodic Black/Death: Unanimated, formed in 1988, is the real, higly influencial, most overlooked, genre-defining shit and this is their magnum opus.

This easily tops everything (!) IF and DT ever wrote. Period.

How is it even possible that I have not been aware of these guys just until a couple of days ago when you mentioned them to me?!
Very good early melodeath indeed. Can hear a lot of Dissection in this one.
That is what I love about this music.
I am counting some 25 years in Metal as of now.
And every other day or so I discover something mind-blowing that I have completely overlooked -- or successfully ignored -- over all the years.

Very true this.
I have given this album probably about 12-15 spins in recent days.
Here are my ratings:
Life demise 8.9
Oceans of time 8.9
Mireille 8.5
Eye of the greyhound 8.4
Die alone 8.4
Dead calm 8.3
Ruins 8.3
The depths of a black sea 8.2
Dying emotions domain 8.2

Overall I have an 8.4 for this album.
That suffices to enter my all-time top 222 at a solid rank.
I am stunned to discover such a great album only now, after having blatantly ignored it for so many years.

At par with Storm of the Light's Bane

I even favor this over Dissection's magnum opus.

BTW, good news for fans of Unanimated: their new album is finished and will be released later this year.
Finally!

Finding albums like these are rare and hence I tend to overappreciate them a little so that more people get to know about it

I'm not sure about rare but more so scarce. I get the feeling however as confidence coming from re-experience, especially when such uplifting effect happens upon revisiting a relic can be to a great result in hindsight.

Just revisited this album, and enjoy it now more than ever! It's so melodic and yet so evil sounding too, just as good as Nocturnal Silence imo, I forgot just how strong those riffs are, incredible stuff really

Why is this album so overlooked? This is an absolutely excellent melodic black/death metal combination! The guitar-work is so magical!

The catchy riffs in fact remind me a lot of Edge Of Sanity, which maybe isn't just a coincidence because the one and only Dan Swanö engineered this masterpiece!

This instantly has become one of my favorite black metal albums! These damn riffs are soooo goood!
My favorite tracks here are: "Eye of the Greyhound", "Oceans of Time", "Mirelle", "Ruins", and "Die Alone"(but, really, all of the songs are sweet!)

I can see this growing on me a lot in the next couple of months. I was mostly intrigued due to many comparisons to Dissection and other melodeath/black bands. Plus, I respect Starvynth*'s opinion and tastes. So I had to buy it when I saw that gorgeous yet simple artwork on vinyl at a metal festival. I think the vocals are the thing that sound like Dissection the most. Equally violent and raspy. At some moments I'd say it's even better. On the riff department I would still preffer the blacker sound of Dissection but this is god-tier riffing without a doubt. And oh boy the solos are fucking stellar. I don't know what else to say about them. Soaring solos.

The short songs also make this album sound extremely tight with no filler at all. One thing where Unanimated is definitely superior would be the drumming. The blastbeats are there as one would expect but there is plenty of varied playing going on here. The keyboards are subtle but help a lot in bringing the riffs to the next level.

This and the previous are certified hood classics in melodeath. This one in particular is like a darker more somber Edge of Sanity.
