The first tracks of this album are worthwhile enough; people say this might be Morbid Angel's weaker album, the vocalist became powerless (cool thing because that fact marked David Vincent's return) the music is a little uninspired and the songwriting wasn't as tight as it used to be?but those two first songs are way intense and more powerful than any song in the entire "Steve Tucker" roster.

Unquestionably one of death metals pioneers, Morbid Angel have once again returned to prominence with a new album, and to show all why their highly regarded influential reputation precedes them before anyone else on the scene. Keeping in line with Morbid Angel's alphabetical album titles, the three piece act's latest [and eighth studio album to date] goes under the name of ?Heretic?.

It would be a nice and complete enough album if it didnt have those 6!!!! interludes-instrumentals etc... stricken arise, enshrined by grace and within thy enemy are the best songs imo..

I can see what happened here with these guys. I'm a strong fan of theirs and I could never get into this album until not too long ago. I can hear it as a guitarist that grew listening to Morbid Angel, starting to play just as Formulas came out, that Trey has lost a great deal of creativity in song writing. I've been watching interviews with them, post-Vincent. He acts like it was because David Vincent wasn't writing lyrics that he likes, but what really happened is that Vincent married Gen from the Genitortures and played bass and toured with her band. It's really that simple. Vincent's more social, and he isn't.

It's my guess Vincent teamed back up with them when he heard this album, because compared to every other album, this one is complete and utter garbage.

Track 14 is nothing more than the solo at the end of Invocation of the Continual off of Formulas without any backing music. If you were a big fan in the late 90s, they had a special edition CD you could get with JUST Trey's guitar solos without any backing instruments. Enshrined is a good song, but nothing else really catches my ear at all.

This was my first Morbid album... At the time I was a bit disappointed with this band, but when I listened to Altars...

The first two songs totally own, but then the album loses steam from there.

And I'm not sure what the few songs at the end are all about. In fact, I'd say that the second half of this album is a bunch of "meh", especially with all of those weird interlude/instrumental tracks that many times seem totally out of place. Not only that, but why so many in a row? Tracks 11-14 are all kind of garbage tracks.

The only thing that makes me want to give it anything higher than 6 is the fact that, again, those first two tracks are great, and a good portion of the album isn't bad.

Decent songs, but those filler interludes kill it.

It has some great stuff. Praise the Strength is very cool, I find the Instrumentals quite good as well, pretty great dark ambient. This album is a 7 or 6 taking into account the last dumb instrumentals from track 13 onward... But I just ignore them, they are last, so they don't get in the way

As far as Death Metal goes, this is an ok album. I dont really appreciate the number of instrumental tracks, althought from what I understood, there is some hidden meaning behind those. Besides that, it's okay overall. As far as a Morbid Angel album goes, it's a bit underwhelming considering not even the first 4 albums but the fact that this came after Gateways. Was expecting them to coast of off the inertia of a great album but i guess that never was something MA did before.

This reminds me more of a bad version of Immolation than the Morbid Angel I knew prior to this album. They just went all out heavy and dissonant on this but the result sounds a bit too messy for my liking.
