Opeth's debut album Orchid released in 1995 is a keeper. It isn't mentioned much by Opeth fans but it is certainly a lost treasure. New fans will stray from the album as more reviewers simply write the album off as being 'brutal' and 'sloppy' or 'solid death metal' as what I have read. The thing is that Orchid is just as diverse as Blackwater Park or their latest release, Ghost Reveries. Presented in Orchid is what will become of Opeth on a grand scale: brutal, melodic, acoustic, alternative, emotional and heartfelt by placing melodic death metal alongside acoustic and clean electric guitar rock. I was LOLing at your initial post because to me it reads as if you are claiming that each and every of their albums, including those after Heritage, is better than the debut. And I am pretty sure that many people would disagree with this claim.

At times brilliant, other times meandering. And a little bloated, considering the content. First time I listened to this since my early 20s and my opinion of it is exactly the same. I suppose some things stay the same regardless of the passage of time.

Same opinion, same rating... 1995 has been such a great year for metal and whenever I listen to Orchid, it just makes me appreciate Slaughter Of The Soul, Solar Lovers, The Gallery, Storm Of The Light's Bane, Wolfheart, Amok and The Angel And The Dark River a little bit more each time.

In mist she was standing is outstanding on this one. Under the weeping moon and Forest of october have their moments but over all a little too long and boring album imo.
