I don't think this sounds like regular death metal, seeing as Demilich-ian death metal is practically is own sub-genre because of those atypical, angular riffs (Chthe'ilist, Cosmic Atrophy, Adramalech etc.) For this to be made in in 1993 is pretty avant-garde to me.
But yeah, when did this suddenly get the prog death tag?

Well, yea, its not as copied as much as Stockholm Death or Florida Death and it has its own distinct sound to it. I'm just saying that it sounds like regular death in that it doesn't seem either progressive or avant-garde.
Though, if you say that 'for 1993, its avant-garde' then A Blaze In The Northern Sky is avant-garde as well...for 1992.

Well I don't see why Gorguts get the avant-garde tag 5 years after this was made with Obscura. That just seems like a more abrasive version of this to me. Atonality within death metal is pretty avant-garde, and still is, and I can't think of any bands that did it before Demilich.

Bah, I think my memory was failing me. I'm getting too old. Just put this on again and I'm all like "God, I'm a moron".

I'm ashamed it took me this many years to find this album, outstanding, way ahead of it's time. I do recommend 20th Adversary of Emptiness which has all the tracks on this album but they sound remastered. Most, but not all, of the remasters I like better.

Some songs remind me of Atheist a lot (minus the vocals obviously), so I'd say yeah. The burpy growling chased me away so many times I couldn't get into this for sooo loong.

Nespithe aka "The Spine" (or "The Penis") kills. There's just no other death metal album like it, even the demo songs and some of the newer ones from anniversary re-release are awesome.

I love early death metal but this one has never really done it for me.
Those burpy vocals are just weird and ruin it for me every time I try to listen.

I agree - it's hard to immerse oneself... the riffs are kind of interestingly weird though

Terrible vocals. Thankfully they’re few and far between. Love the obviously jazz inspired riffing. Been a long time since I’ve listened to this.

Anyone who doesn't like these glorious ghastly vocals must prefer the boring dime-a-dozen Cookie Monster vocals of every other death metal band ever.
One of my favorite death metal albums ever, even if it's not the best one I've ever listened to. The disgusting, outlandish Lovecraftian sort of atmosphere is one yet to be matched by anything that came after.

Goddamn... A 3 is outlandish. I get the vocals & lyrics might not be your thing or most people's cup of tea, but woah. The music in there is insanely intricate, unique and jazzy. This hurts hahaha.

Yeah, you guys are totally right. My 4-years-younger self never gave this a real chance due to the burpy vocals. But, now, I've seen the light!
This is some exceptional death metal with great interweaving riffs and solos. There's groove, atmosphere, and complex prog stuff—a very neat mix. I'm even starting to like the unusual vocals.
Thanks again for the recommendation. Redemption arc accomplished!
