Nile have been going for a long time, and are one of the few death metal bands that have been so consistently brilliant with each release for this long. Each album in the catalogue has been subtly different, and number seven At The Gate Of Sethu is no different.

It sounds like they're just trying to hard to be and ultra brootal technical death metal band even though Karl is 48 and losing almost all of his musical capabilities (sorry Karl, you're not Wolfgang Teske). The overall sound is weak, especially the vocals.

Thankfully, Dying Fetus still manage.

Pretty enjoyable album for me. I actually can't remember the older Nile albums I listened to, it was such a long time ago but this one might make me go back a little.

Nile has somehow made a very interesting lyrical topic quite stale. What a shame.

This album has outstanding riffs, just cuz the vocals are decipherable doesn't mean it deserves a fuckin' 5. It still has the awesome background lows that accompany the main vocals nicely. This is an awesome album for sure. Yeah it ain't In Their Darkened Shrines brutal , but it shows great progression of talent within the band.

This album is much better than their last release, in my opinion.
It's like a cosmic blend of old-skool Nile with New-Skool Nile.
I fucking love it!

Probably the worst vocals i've heard in many years among with Mameli's on the latest Pestilence album. (of course, i mean that they are awfull in comparison with the amazing vocal work these 2 bands used to have on their previous albums)

Same, thanks Joe for reminding me about this.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. The whole thing sounds paper thin. Some songs are aimless and sound almost unfinished. The riffs are weak and unoriginal. It's not even technically interesting. Where is that groove and that atmosphere? Even the interludes sound like they're put there because they felt compelled to. The instrumental bonus tracks are actually much more satisfying in terms of production. They sound fuller than the rest of the album, and they're not ruined by the inconsistent and too prominent vocals.

I am extremely disappointed and thankful I didn't listen to this earlier. This album is a pale imitation of what they were before.

Hmm, I remember liking this enough to buy it when I saw it in the local record store. Wasn't exactly blown away by it but I don't think it's a significant departure from their back catalog.

I don't think it's a significant departure from their back catalog.

It sounded to me like a watered down version of their back catalog. It's not terrible, but from what I remember it just made me wanna listen to their better albums.

I'm confused. I liked the vocals here (even the guest one, like in "The Fiends Who Come To Steal The Magick Of The Deceased") and the Pestilence's new one (Actually, it is the only thing that I liked from that album).

Some masterfully crafted moments here and there - particularly on the first three tracks - but overall it's just passable Nile...which is still good.
