Early this January, during the first days of 2012, Lethian Dreams returned with their second full-length, Season Of Raven Words. One could expect a bit of the same, already done before atmospheric melodic doom that blends anguished or grunting male vocals with ethereal relaxing female vocals that can be found on their debut album, but also on a hundred other releases.
Lethian Dreams this time put emphasis on the first half of their sound, the ethereal/atmospheric part, and embed a few slightly neoclassical elements more like feeling rather than part of a structure, leaving behind the "heavier" riffing and the male interpretation. On Season Of Raven Words Carline Van Roos takes over the whole vocal aspect. With her tranquil and surrounding aura she veils the soundscape and the rest of the instrumentation accompanies and completes her with emotional intensity. On one hand, the guitars possess a bittersweet sound and a lurking essence whenever they use distortion, they almost caress the vocals. On the other hand, the acoustic chords and harmonics evoke an even more gentle essence. One could notice at times a slightly shoegazing touch and/or a more goth-oriented approach. A few piano/keyboard passages add to the scenery even more without exaggerating. Just for the history, a kind of more enriched version of "White Gold" from the 2011 compilation, Just Passing By... & Unreleased Requiems, found its way in Season Of Raven Words.
If you're looking for atmospheric metal willing to tranquilize your senses with its fragile aura and hallucinating ambiance, then Lethian Dreams' latest effort could be a pleasant companion.
