1987, Johan Langquist had already left Candlemass and the band was searching for a new singer. A guy named Messiah Marcolin, impressed by Candlemass, called Leif Edling and while his stepmother was holding the phone he was playing on the guitar and at the same time singing Candlemass' songs. Edling enchanted by the voice of this mysterious guy with the even more mysterious name invited MArcolin to perform with them in order to check him. This is what the rumours say about how the nocturnal monk with the heavenly voice became part of Candlemass, the rest is history.

This album is yet another classic one from Candlemass. The music is more astounding, the atmosphere is more melancholic, and i don't think anyone could forget those powerful, haunting lines 'You are Bewi-i-tched'. 'Bewitched' introduced me to the band, so it is a good place to start.

I used to be completely sure that Messiah (or any Candlemass vocalist) can never be as good as Langquist. After hearing Messiah's huge performance on "Gallows End" I'm not that sure anymore, epic stuff.

This could have been on the same level of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus if they had not included the interludes and The Well Of Souls.

Great instrumentals but his vocal style isn't to my taste. The video for Bewitched makes Messiah even harder to take seriously

Should probably give this album another proper listening, but as far as I remember I always liked "The Well Of Souls" best here. It's actually the only song I ever come back to from this album.

What the fuck????
The Well Of Souls is one of the BEST songs with Messiah and of the band in general. The main riff is classic!

It has many great riffs. I especially like the one Nile used for Unas Slayer Of The Gods.

Hell yeah this is doom metal the way I like it! Messiah does a good job of continuing the epic vocal style of Johan Langquist and the riffs are foreboding as always!

Samarithan is one of the best songs ever written. The entire album is stacked with classics, but Samarithan is one of the few metal songs that I could say are outright beautiful, both conceptually and lyrically.

I also disagree with previous comment that interludes are needless, Candlemass was one of the few bands that could recapture the magic of the original track within metal context, both the Chopin track and Epistle No. 81 are monumental.

As top 1980s metal vocals go, Messiah is probably top 3 alongside Eric Adams of Manowar and Danzig for being able to add a whole new atmosphere to the music. All three brought a new, impossible-to-replicate dimension. I get that people like the debut but, for me, Messiah’s vocals are what catapult this into classic status. The two albums that followed were played to death in my house at the time, but the band never came close to repeating this power / doom majesty.

This album has seriously grown on me over time. So much so that I actually prefer it over the debut album.
