Black Moon Rising is a surprising turn after Falconer's previous album. Very much in the spirit of their self-titled debut effort, this release signals for galloping power metal over the folk preferences the band have shown us at varied stages over the course of their consistent career.

Excellent show case of Jimmy Hedlund's guitar work, some of the most melodic and creative solos out there, and I can say with absolute confidence here is his best work since Northwind. He's uploaded most of them to youtube by now, so head there if you aren't convinced yet.

Next time I hope they keep his guitars louder in the mix, they are frustratingly quiet for their beauty. The album is very riff heavy, with the riffs being louder in some cases than the vocals, and almost always louder than the solos. Song structures and the vocal melodies are not as catchy as previous albums, and I found myself skipping to each solo almost on every track, now forcing myself to go back and actually listen to them all the way through.

That being said, for Falconer fans the album is a must, and for guitar fans as well.

Guitar riffs and solos are great, they getting better and better. The whole album continues with the classic Falconer sound of the previous albums however, this one is missing some hits and the songs are too similar in structure and the vocals are not changing a lot. I can't remember a catchy song (and by catchy I don't mean a 3 chord sing along song) but a melody that really sticks in my head. I still rated it as an 8 because the album almost has no fillers.
