Well firstly this album I acutally paid for myself (by working my ass off and stealing cash when I could!) in order to get signed to another label. In the end I was happy with it considering all the shit I went through to get it done (living in poverty, putting up with an arrogant, arsehole, money hungry, shit session drummer, travelling 1400km round trip to the recording studio several times, dealing with Nesci!). It was to be my first and last full length album coz I was so disillusioned with the whole music industry bullshit, but I guess I learnt from it and made an even better follow-up album! (i.e. "The Last Moment" to be released Feb '05).
01. Silence :
My first fully acoustic song. Even though it's a short one, to me it's probably one of the most powerful songs on the CD. The lyrics are actually from a personal letter I once wrote for someone...they are meaningless to me now though.
02. Through The Eyes Of Regret:
A song about all the regrets I have in life, and at the time, I had many! You won't hear it, but this song was heavily influenced by DiSEMBOWELMENT, particularly the 1st heavy riff. This song originally was on the 1999 "Out of the depths of sorrow" demo (unreleased).
03. Oration of Indifference:
This one also featured on the "Out of the depths of sorrow" demo. I was never sure if I was totally happy with this one, but I remember James really liked it, so it was recorded. The chant lyrics at the start mean alot to me, and reflect my view on life.
04. Thoughts :
A real old song that was meant to be on the 1st CD, but James wasn't really into it, so it wasn't recorded. I wrote it when I was mentally stuck in a deep chasm, and I think the first riff accurately reflects that period. The lyrics for the first part go:
"Surrounded by sadness,
I see no bright light
Percieving no colour
Only black and white
I embrace this delusion
Where night falls each day
The rapture of my madness
When will I pass away?"
05. Etiolation:
Originally featured as an intro the debut CD "Odyssey into Darkness" (CANDLE020MCD), but with some spoken word added. I originally wanted it this way, but James wasn't into it on the 1st CD. This time round, I got my way! You'll never notice, but the riff is actually the heavy "A Rare Moment" lead in reverse!! The reverse vocals are:
"I have no desire to see the light
Forever dwell in darkness
The many truths are the same to me
Cleanse my mind from their harness"
06. A Rare Moment:
Originally written for distorted guitar! The main verse riff was written by James, chorus and heavy part by me. The strings at the end were written by James for bass guitar, but I re-did them for strings and timpani. I'm really embarressed about how that string part turned out actually, coz my sessions we're just learning the song when Tony Nesci (engineer) told us he was finished for the day and refused to record any more. Therefore the end part strings were done in about 15 minutes, with really no practice, and therefore quite sloppy, but that was that and there was nothing I could do about it, unless pay more money for another day, which was out of the question, 'coz I was broke! The lyrics were written by my grand-mother way back in the 40's or 50's or something, and I adapted them to fit and added a chorus. The song was actually played at her funeral 2 years later.
07. Pain And Elation :
Just a poem I wrote in one of my down periods when I was a youngster. Means alot to me.
08. Depleted :
One of my pesonal favourites... This song was partly inspired by the atmosphere created by the song "Norvegr" on Enslaved's self titled album - (I reckon "Norvegr" was one of the finest songs ever written!) I'm particularly proud of how the "duel" between the violin and cello turned out. I love it!
09. For Eternity :
A song I wrote many many years ago, forgot about, then re-discovered it. Extremely simple, but when using Dee's voice, it was very effective! I wanted this to feature so I could show some people that maybe I could write for movie sountracks.
