Fear Factory interview (10/2012)

With: Burton C. Bell
Conducted by: Baz Anderson (in person)
Published: 28.10.2012

Band profile:

Fear Factory

About to kick off a co-headlining European tour with Devin Townsend, Fear Factory frontman Burton gives us a few words about the past, present and future of the band.

00:06 | How are you doing?
00:09 | Tour starting with Devin Townsend in two days, are you looking forward to that?
00:30 | You've just released The Industrialist, it's a different album with just you and Dino and programmed drums. Is this the future of Fear Factory?
01:30 | Are you interested in having permanent bass and drumming positions, or are they just going to be touring positions?
02:20 | Your last two albums have been pretty aggressive, do you think you'll experiment any more in the future?
02:57 | Fear Factory has always been ahead of its time, especially with the early stuff, what influenced you?
04:19 | So at what point did you think Fear Factory could be big?
04:44 | Did you think when you released Demanufacture that you'd be playing so many songs from that album so many years down the line?
05:09 | What was it like meeting and working with Gary Numan when you did "Cars"?
06:10 | How do you look back on the Digimortal album considering so many people look at it as nu metal and commercial?
07:26 | Was the original split in 2002 harder because you were at the height of your commercial success at the time?
07:47 | The Transgression album is a lot more experimental album and divided opinion. How do you look at that seven years down the line?
09:04 | Why don't you tend to play songs live from that album or the Archetype album?
09:27 | Have you thought about a new remix album with some new songs techno-ed up?
09:51 | Looking back over the history of the band, what's the one thing you would change?
10:30 | Which one is your favourite Fear Factory album?
11:21 | Being in an industrial metal band, have you heard the new Morbid Angel album?
11:48 | Last words.

A review of the show can be seen here!

Thanks to Burton and Mike.
Conducted, edited, recorded by Barry Anderson.

Pretty good interview, I liked his honesty regarding not playing songs from Transgression or Archetype...a nice insight into Burton's mind, and I must agree that Obsolete is one of the greats (only rivaled by Demanufacture within their own discography for sure). Nice one Baz!

Very interesting actually. Now I'm more curious to see them with Devin. Even though most of the people I'm going with want to dish the show after Devin.

If I'm paying, I want to see all the bands.

Good interview, I saw that question about Morbid Angel and was really hoping he had something to say about it. I also like how he was honest and threw Dino under the bus, "we don't play those songs cuz Dino doesn't want to".

Great interview, but that he had not heard the new Morbid Angel , maybe he was just to polite as a fellow musician to voice his opinion

Should have asked why they short changed us on the new album-they forgot a couple of proper songs at the end, instead of 10 minutes of noise. It's still bugging me!

Does anyone else think that Burton looks a bit like Philip Seymour Hoffman?
