When I started listening the debut of Periphery, I was soon dissociating from the experience, like my brain wanted to lock itself outside of the musical experience. I simply was not present anymore. How am I supposed to evaluate Periphery and formulate an opinion on their discography? The restless prog djent is not grounded to anything, and I feared I might need a painkiller for the headache soon.

What emotions does Periphery even want to convey, as I feel like they are keeping me at a pole's length of the possible emotions? They disguise the emotions in an ever-changing puzzle that goes too fast for my old ass to solve in time. I don't even understand the lyrics. And when the album duration exceeds 50 minutes, I feel like being fooled. They are smiling and laughing at me inside their djentcore glass dome, where no critic can hurt them. Besides, if it sounds complex does it mean it's "progressive"? Does the progressive mean "the future"? Or is it just garbage wrapped in fancy production?

Clearly I'm not the person who would listen to Periphery, but then again... who really is? I've listened to blackened death metal, avant-garde, progressive metal, and many others where progressiveness, complexity, strange song progression meet different vocal styles, yet they are able to convey emotions and sense of expression and art. Periphery is a Rubik's cube in a white-walled hygiene facility.

And there is no one around. I feel so alone with this album. And I can't remember much of it.

This review resonates with me so much! I am thankful I am not the only one that expects more substance than trickery
