Along the Misty Route through to Ethos, and then to alternative metal greatness!

Misty Route is a Greek alternative metal trio formed in 2019. They consist of drummer Konstantinos Kaloudis (who replaced Kostas Bacopoulos in 2023), and founding members George Armando Konomi (bass) and Lefteris Saatsakis (guitars/vocals). The band name, "Misty Route", refers to their philosophy of life being a "misty" journey through the unknown rather than an actual destination. They released their full-length debut Without A Trace in 2021, establishing a diverse style influenced by a range of iconic bands, from Metallica and Deftones, to Tool and Opeth, combining genres including psychedelic and progressive rock, thrash and heavy metal, while blending dark ambient soundscapes with striking melodies. Now they return 5 years later hoping to progress that unique style to the next level with their sophomore effort Ethos

The title "Ethos" represents a person's values and behaviour, which coincides with the album's concept that explores human values and morale. The lyrics are relatable and thought-provoking, covering the problems we face with modern society; for example, "Dictator" explores the struggles of political leadership, whereas "Blind God” follows the concept of God through a child's perspective who cannot comprehend the violence and injustice in this world. "Freedom" then delves into human resilience against social vulnerability, whilst "Born With A Price Tag” describes a reality where material goods hold more value than humans. The cover art depicts a flame that symbolizes the strength and resilience of humanity in the face of our darkest times. In essence, the flame is carried deep within our souls refusing to go out, and is used as the last line of defence when struggles might arise, giving us the strength we need when there is no other hope left.

Musically, the album follows a similar dynamic route to the previous album. This involves heavy melodic and dark atmospheric sections that transition from complex progressive structures. The rhythm dynamically shifts from complex to headbangable grooves through powerful thundering bass and stylish drums. The guitar work varies impressively from dark melancholic strings and traditional heavy riffs with memorable hooks, to thrash-tinged solos. Lefteris Saatsakis pulls off a very impressive vocal performance, sounding like he's come straight out of the 90s grunge scene with his husky, assertive grunge-tinged singing that sounds very much in the vein of Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. The synths, although only only featured as a minor role, add more depth to the overall atmosphere where necessary. The compositions are tight and cohesive, and the production is mixed and polished to a very high standard, allowing each element to shine.

Ethos is not only heavier but has more emotional depth and maturity than that of the debut, as well as most of what you'll encounter in the modern alternative metal scene. This category covers a broad range of influences as it is, but Misty Route have gone the extra mile by introducing elements that very few, if any, band has done before, creating a style that's not only unique to them but could turn out to be groundbreaking for the genre. If you want to experience alternative metal in its darkest, most melodic, and most progressive form with real professionalism in songwriting, memorable hooks, top quality performances, and high-end production qualities, then look no further than the Greek trio Misty Route.

An honest review that you don't necessarily have to agree with.
