Aversio Humanitatis translates from Latin to "loathing for humanity". Take an unforgiving dissonant journey with To Become The Endless Static and you'll understand exactly how that feels.

Aversio Humanitatis is a Spanish black metal band formed in 2010. Their style is a modern dissonant take on the genre, where they incorporate death and minor industrial elements through swirling dissonant compositions and oppressive cavernous walls of sound that create unforgiving hellish atmospheres, much in the vein of bands such as Svartidauði, Blut Aus Nord, and Deathspell Omega. Their lyrical themes are mostly centred around Nihilism, dystopian landscapes, and metropolitan and human decline. They released their raw and frantic full-length debut Abandonment Ritual in 2011 before unleashing the unrelenting overlooked gem that was Behold The Silent Dwellers almost a decade later in 2020. Six years later they return from the dark hellish depths with To Become The Endless Static.

Whereas the concept behind the Behold The Silent Dwellers covered dystopian ruins, To Become The Endless Static explores the deterioration of one's consciousness both physically and psychologically. Vocalist/bassist Alex Moreán described the album's concept as a painful process of losing a close role model, with lyrics based on the gradual physical and mental degradation of a person, capturing their memories and connections to what once formed their identity. It's a journey where the listener spirals down a disintegrating path of overarching "endless static" (hence the album title) towards nothingness.

To Become The Endless Static is a relatively short album at just under 35 minutes in length, but musically it's a massive sonic shift from their previous album. In no way have they pulled away from the velocity and oppressiveness of their previous offering; the opposite is in fact the case, as here they've upped the intensity. The sound is heavier, there's more atmospheric depth with added emotional despair, and structurally it's more brutal with more emphasis placed on angular death. This direction has resulted in masterfully tight and balanced compositions with no filler content through razor-sharp ferocious tremolos, high-pitched twisting leads, powerful intense drumming, deep theatrical gutturals and tortuous shrieks that bellow out in anguish, all swirling from within an unrelenting claustrophobic vortex of dissonance. It's densely layered and suffocatingly atmospheric, but many unyielding melodies are hidden within its formidable wall of sound. However, you can quite easily uncover these melodies due to the immaculate production and superb mixing by the band's very own multi-instrumentalist Simón Da Silva.

Aversio Humanitatis really made their mark on modern black metal in 2020 with Behold The Silent Dwellers, and this left those with a keen interest in dissonant black in anticipation for more. What they'd conjure up next could well define them as either a formidable force within the oversaturated scene, or simply another band that had the potential but failed to make an impact. What they have unleashed here on To Become The Endless Static is means that the former will almost certainly be the case. This is undoubtedly one of the highlights of dissonant black metal in 2026. The sea of dissonance and oppressive atmosphere has the potential to engulf you into a world of insufferable torment and despair, a world that's, however, not for the faint-hearted. This journey is as beautiful as it is unforgiving, but unweary listeners who value their sanity should certainly tread with caution.

An honest review that you don't necessarily have to agree with.
