Today's play: "Moonspell or how to surprise with every album". Successor of the quite good Sin/Pecado, The Butterfly Effect is once again something very different from what you can expect from this surprizing Portuguese band. Evolution is the favorite word of Moonspell's compositors and here we are, in the heart of an experimental release.
The musicians have put emphasis on contrast between calm main melodies and violent choruses [with all the rage of the world in Ribeiro's voice]. And that would be OK provided it is used only on some tracks. Unfortunately, this contrast appears to be a recurrent schema in the entire album. As a result, the music loose all originality and it sounds like a binary composition. Even if the production is great, even if the sound is huge, the album progressively appears to be repetitive and more than that, boring.
Despite previous both excellent albums [Irreligious and Sin/Pecado], Monnspell's discography has always been something almost incoherent. While their debut album was a black metal work, they turn into a gothic/doom band, releasing albums all very different. Considered as the main advantage of the band by their leader [and singer] Fernando Ribeiro, it was nevertheless obvious that this succession of different musical works would one day cross the line. Unfortunately, The Butterfly Effect is that album. If you like Irreligious or Sin/Pecado, avoid this album or at least, expect something totally different. However, if you are keen on experimental doom music, this album was designed for you [I'm not into that kind of music hence the rating].

Quote: Good review man, this part summs up what this album is about. Althou I really liked the ''Can't Bee'' track, maybe because the constrasts aren't so evident.

Moonspell's weakest, but not deserving of a 5.5 Angelizer, Soulsick, Can't Bee are the best. I give it a 7.
