Good Mixes
Good Mixes
You know what, let's create the counterpart to the "Bad Mixes" list, just so people don't get the impression that I'm here solely to criticize everything. Good mixes happen too. No complain, you can focus on music rather than sound, you're even enjoying all the little prod details, simply amazed. You realise the previous album was indeed badly mixed and that it's not just your ears. Once again, I'm only adding my findings of 2025.

1.
Cyanide Grenade
- Cannibal Era
Very warm, very saturated, very thumpy. Not a lot of things to say, only that it's raw and tube-like and I like this.

2.
Eidola
- Mend
Obviously a very modern production, much so that it doesn't really ressemble metal (the way I concieve it), but everything is right, nice, clean, efficient. There's a variety of textures blending together, macro-dynamics in the songs. It's not too flat, loud while still capable of power bursts, consistent... which is impressive considering the variety of sounds to work with.

3.
Obscure Sphinx
- Emovere
The vocals are low in the back, putting all the instruments forefront, but that's not a problem, as it creates an atmosphere and makes everything massive. The subs are very well controlled, and it's a pleasure to hear the kick and toms. The bass is incredible growly. The guitars make a reverbed wall of sound, efficient and not fatiguing. Meanwhile the singer is just killing it.

Century
- Sign Of The Storm
This band really crafted their own sound, with a cloudy atmosphere and weirdly long reverbs on the vocals. The overall mix is fairly dynamic, the kick drum and toms are really perfect. Every element falls in place and contributes. It's nice to have an oldschool vibe while bringing something new.

5.
Pathogenic
- Crowned In Corpses
Normally I would say it's too loud and flat, but this one remains very cohesive and aggressive. I don't know how they achieve such a thing, but that's how a "modern" metal mix should sound like imo

6.
Sepulchral Curse
- Crimson Moon Evocations
Very clean wall of sound, living vast atmosphere, the reverbs are not muffling everything, the drums are modern and hit well.

7.
Destruction
- Birth Of Malice
Some complain it's too generic and industrialized. It is. But that's an example of a very good sound by industry standard. Everything is clean, clear, cutting through, it's somewhat loud but still dynamic, massive when it needs to be, each instrument gets a moment to shine and is perfectly tailored. Everything is made to please the ear. Which may not be the core purpose of a thrash record in fact, hence the criticism - I featured UDO on the bad mix list for its disappointing cover of Balls To The Walls, and as a counterpart we have a nice cover of Fast As The Shark here.

Vildhjarta
- Där Skogen Sjunger Under Evighetens Grana
Impressively massive and punchy, each kick snare is a real hit in the guts, and the guitar tone is beautiful. The numerous switches from loud to sparse or conversely are efficient and explosive. I'm even amazed when it goes louder than it already was, sometimes.

11.
Conflicto
- World Of Misery
what, this? well produced? it's obviously quite roomy, but frankly, I can picture myself being there during the recording, and it's nice. If you accept that this is the picture you will get of course, no otherwordly space, no cave, no fog, no heroes, no scifi... you're just in the room. It fits. It has texture, it has dynamics, it's helped by the sound engineer only when it needs too, you can appreciate all instruments, all the real sound of drums, despite some playing mistakes here and there. I like this better than any modern wall of noise.

12.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
- Phantom Island
They really nailed the 70s sound, it's dynamic, lively, warm, saturated yet clear, a real treat. Plus the whole lot of insruments of any kind, it's really excellent.
