Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2010

Wacken Open Air 2009 was a huge disappointment for many metal fans. In 2008 the world's biggest heavy metal festival has booked Iron Maiden as headliners and has raised the bar a bit too high for its own good. In 2009, the 20th anniversary of this legendary festival, a lot of bands appeared which have played in the years before already, but no uber headliner a la Iron Maiden to justify the high ticket price. Many people blamed the W:O:A to rely on its name only as the 20th edition was sold out eight months prior to the festival. In 2010 however the Wacken Open Air proves all these critics wrong...

Iron Maiden are back again! And this time they aren't the uber headliners of 2008, but only primus inter pares ("first among equals"): thrash titans Slayer, glam metal monsters Mötley Crüe and the father of shock rock Alice Cooper are also confirmed as headliners for the 21st edition. And as always there are a few special performances: Grave Digger celebrate their 30th anniversary by performing the entire "Tunes of War" album, a show which will also feature some special guests, while Swedish gothic metal pioneers Tiamat will be performing their legendary "Wildhoney" album, 20 years after the band Treblinka mutated into the Tiamat we know today. But even if you don't care for either of these bands, Wacken once again offers a wide array of metal styles for almost everyone: black metal with Immortal and 1349, death metal with Cannibal Corpse and grindcore supergroup Lock Up, power metal with Kamelot and Stratovarius, heavy metal with U.D.O. and W.A.S.P., modern metal with Fear Factory and Soulfly, etc. etc. etc.. All in all a whopping 122 acts will perform on five stages over a period of four days.

Wacken Open Air takes plays in - surprise! - Wacken in Northern Germany, a small village with merely 2,000 inhabitants on 361 days of the year. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km northwest of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

Certainly not the cheapest, but probably the most fun way to get to and from Wacken has to be the Metal Train. The "railway to hell" equals one huge party of 850 metalheads in one train with 16 wagons, which includes two dedicated disco wagons. Check the website for the schedule and prices.

The festival is officially sold out since April. Most tour operators (e.g. Metal Train for Germany, Bock Tours for the Netherlands, Germany, Austria or Switzerland, Argon Events for the UK) still have tickets in stock though.

Another way to acquire your ticket would be the ticket exchange in the official forum which aims for eliminating the black marketing going on eBay and reducing the risk of acquiring fake tickets. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

I can't go to Wacken this year
My job is mental, I can't take the time off. First week of the month is when all the invoicing and reports happen, I have to be here.
SO - I have a 3 day ticket FREE to a good home. Seriously, I don't want any money for it. Giving it away is good karma. First in first served. PM me if you want it or email me meldoumbos@gmail.com

Please have loads of beers for me. I drank my share at Hellfest - spent 400euro on beer alone. Awesome.

Haven't really taken a look at the RO yet. The only clash I've noticed so far is Iron Maiden vs Gojira.

Iron Maiden | Gorira -> Gojira
Orphaned Land | Job For A Cowboy -> Orphaned Land
Endstille | Evile -> ...
Slayer | 1349 -> 1349
1349 | Ihsahn -> Ihsahn
Cannibal Corpse | Stratovarius -> Cannibal Corpse
Cannibal Corpse | Debauchery -> Cannibal Corpse
Solstafir | Edguy -> Solstafir
Candlemass | Immortal | Orden Ogan -> ...
<whichever I decide for in the previous slot> | Rotting Christ -> Rotting Christ
Tiamat | Fear Factory -> Tiamat

Most of them are just overlapping half an hour or so, in that case the band I decide for is the one I'll be seeing full time. 1349 and Ihsahn are annoying, and between Immortal and Candlemass I can't decide yet. If Candlemass still had Marcolin, I'd sure as hell see them. And Orden Ogan play at the same time, so it's a battle between three bands that all play into Rotting Christ's slot.
The other one's are obvious.

Okay so in the meet&greet slot there is one hour for BLIND GUARDIAN. i hope that means they'll also have a slot to play, it would be ridiculous just to have them there to sign autographs.

i would much appreciate Soulfly getting off the bill and BG entering

They could be the secret show. I realized that too. But just as with the Tobi Sammet slot in 2007, it could be just to promote a show in 2011 or their new CD. Doro is there to sign stuff almost every year too.

The indicator for the secret show are t-shirts of course. We found out about the secret show that was JBO that way. As did about 20k other people. It was really cool.

All I know is they're t3h m4573rz of sellout. And their capacity to euphemize is endless. They've been adding 'features' to the festival like shit in the last five years because they make money rain like cats the festival a better experience for the audience.

They could just as well be around for promotional purposes. Wacken is also used as a forum for press conferences as a lot of the worldwide metal press will be around. Last year Kamelot was there for the announcement of their tour and two years ago Enslaved had a pre-listening of "Vertebrae" (which btw was the best moment of the whole festival for me) with neither of the two bands actually performing.

shit, i guess you're right.. now i only hope some band cancels and BG will play instead of them since they're already there haha

still, it is pretty frustrating for me as a BG fan, because last year they were doing festivals and Hansi was also there to play a guest song with Rage but the most BG i've heard was a bunch of songs off their live album in one of the shops there (of course i didn't buy anything, i was just bored). i was fiddling through shirts while murmuring along to "Welcome To Dying", almost made my day

that reminds me, is it just me or is the merch at Wacken really fucking overpriced?(not just for my typically empty eastern european pocket ) the official shirts are 30-40 E (i would never have bought one of those, except a Running Wild shirt for nostalgia purposes but i didn't have enough cash to spend on stuff like that), and at the small shops it's almost the same, only stuff is slightly cheaper. the only thing i've actually bought there was a cool blue t-shirt with a demon's face on it that was just 2 euros because i was shirtless, cold, and too lazy to get back to my tent to get a shirt.

this year i intend to surpass my scavenging record of 20 euros from returned beer glasses hahha

People always say that. But even if they did, we're talking a few hundred tickets at most. There hasn't been a noticeable change of size of the crowd since 2007. Also many of those statements are marketing bluffs. They tell people it was almost sold out to get the last undecided ones to buy. I don't think it can get more crowded than last year.

rumors which Im talking about say that after you bought the tickets maybe you cant go to the stage which you love the most, because they sell a lot of tickets and maybe you cant watch your preferred one you know, or something like that. selling tickets more than capacity is what Im talking about.

And that's bullshit. Even though people have been complaining that they couldn't get into the wet stage, I've always managed to do so. Whatever band was playing. And since you don't seem to ever have been there. The stages are _huge_. There is absolutely no fucking way in hell you could miss you favorite band even if the whole festival was watching them.

see? they're trying to keep it intimate and trve

as for tickets, i've seen guys trying to sell them at the festival grounds, no doubt because of some friends not being able to go at the last minute, nothing other than that.

In 2008, when they badly miscut my wristband, I actually got a second ticket for 10? (and the festival hadn't started yet) to get a good wristband. There are people in the streets trying to sell tickets in the hundreds. Quite a way to spend the festival.

seriously, WTF.. last year i moved around the main street and the festival grounds quite a lot and the most i saw were 2 guys waving a ticket in the air.

also, do they even have security at the VIP area?(not that i'd want to get there desperately), i remember though it was the last day and i didn't even know what was behind the steps(only later i found out it was actually the VIP area), i presumed it was just a quick way to get to the village without having to go through all the campsite to the right of the stages, so i oh-so-innocently climbed the stairs, wandered around the area looking for an exit, and finally got on the little street behind the main stages. it was a fun walk up to the main street, where the guy at the barrier didn't see me because i snuck up behind a van.. epic times
