I know there are more of us here than Marcel and I... (I'm looking at you Lord Regnier and BitterCOld)

I figured we could use a thread of our own to discuss those things that are a concern to us aging metalheads, like actually buying albums and reminiscing about the scenes we grew up on and other things of little interest to all these young whippersnappers that are overrunning this place.

So...how many of us can still pull off the long hair without a hat? I know I'm out.

The geriatric thread! haha. Just kidding.

I just have to say that I find it really cool that there's many people who've never lost interest in their music as all these years went by, and on the contrary, it still is a great part of their lives.

What a wonderful thread

I guess I qualify - I'm certainly old enough ...

But , in other ways I am still young - I haven't been listening to metal for all that long - 3 years or so.
I'm still learning and totally useless at deciding genres

Welcome to the club. I'm curious too as to how your interest in metal came about. As you can tell, most of us here grew up with it. Don't worry about genres; enjoy what you enjoy. Genres are only really useful as a sort of shorthand for describing the type of stuff you tend to like or dislike to other metalheads.

On the subject of children - yes I have three , although they don't really qualify as children any more as the youngest just turned 20 :p
Due to bad parenting none of them like metal

My oldest is my 15 year old daughter. I also have three sons 11, 9 and 7. All of them are metalheads, as is my wife. Took my oldest son to his first gig recently.

Didn't Sid Vicious and some punks invent the mosh pit?

That was slam dancing, not moshing. Technical difference

I was meaning in a generational sense, anyways.

I don't really know why metal suddenly seemed to appeal to me .
I suppose I heard a few tracks which roused my curiosity and it grew from there ..

Either that or I am having a second go at my teenage "rebellious" years
It seems to be the music which means most to me these days.

As I said I had a guy who showed me the way to the good bands , or the ones he thought were good anyway.
And , of course , this site has helped a lot .

I do like quite a selection of different styles , and I'm always open to listening to any band - however weird.

Well done with your children , hopefully they will stay metalheads .

Nice to see that an 'old farts' thread like this exists. Damn, only less than four years and I'll belong to the club (bringing a whole new generation of metalheads, as I started listening to metal when I was 16, in 1994...).

But, while waiting for admittance in this oh-so-select club I'll sit next to fire fire to listen to your stories of ages gone by, oh great old ones

Edit: come to think of it, I don't know if I'll belong one day as I still have long hairs and my hairline has only receded a bit, and it seems to be fine right now

Wow, do you ever sound like a bitter old guy sitting on his porch bitching about "kids these days..."

I knew it was only a matter of time before this thread went down that road, but I didn't expect it to be quite this quickly!

This is certainly why Marcel title has been 'Grumpy Old Man' for quite a long time ....

Hangovers don't seem to last longer, but the time it takes my ears to recover from a concert is taking longer, are earplugs worth it?

Marcel is a huge advocate of earplugs at gigs.

I'm usually ok, but you can bet your ass i'll have some next time i catch High on Fire... my right ear was ringing and useless for about two days after that gig.

I worked in a saw mill for thirteen years and played in a band for a couple...yeah earplugs are definitely worthwhile. They can actually make the music clearer by cutting down the extraneous noise.

To quote a favourite song:

"Sometimes my head hurts and sometimes my stomach hurts
And I guess that it won't be long before I'm sitting in a room
With a bunch of people whose necks and backs are aching
Whose sight and hearing's fading, who just can't seem to get it up...

I'm an adult now..."
-"I'm an Adult Now" - The Pursuit of Happiness

On the other hand, there's fellow Canadians Kick Axe's take:

"If it's too loud, you're too old"

All right, I'm off to listen to some cheesy Canadian hair metal...

Well, before this melodeath/Gothenburg debate blows out of proportions...

Old-timers ( ) and death metal purists ( re ) consider melodath to be, as the name implies, death metal with melodies. Check, say, Edge Of Sanity or older Amorphis.
The Gothenburg scene started playing melodeath according to this definition, best examples are At The Gates and old Dark Tranquillity (Skydancer, The Gallery). The scene gradually evolved, losing more and more of its death elements and growing somewhat closer to their heavy/thrash metal roots - but certainly not to the extend of extrem power like Children Of Bodom;
BUT, they were still labelled as melodeath, which infuriates said old timers and death purists, while the young kiddies ( again) are sure the actual Gothenburg scene are playing melodeath.

That's about it.

After a post like that Darkside Momo, I'm granting you honorary "Old Fart Metalstormer" status and giving you a pass to the clubhouse.

Ah ah thanks a lot!
I promise to come here with a walking stick and complain about how my body fails me (it does), and how the world is not what it used to be (it really isn't)
