06. Gave

Call me lazy, call me uncreative, but I am going to spare you the usual accumulation of cute little metaphors that are supposed to convey the brutal nature of the piece of music being reviewed. I'm not going to tell you to imagine how this or that feels, nor compare it to large objects entering the orifices you were or were not born with. I'll be just as straightforward as Permanence is.

This eighteen-minutes-long EP is the baby born from the combined efforts of Primitive Man/Clinging To The Trees Of A Forest Fire's frontman and guitarist E.L. McCarthy, as well as his bassist mate Zach Harlan, and finally newcomer Fiorentino on the drums. You can only expect something good to come out of this, and rightly so.

Vermin Womb delivers a rather distinct and extremely heavy mix of death, grind, and sludge. On top of that very corrosive combination come those inhuman guttural "vomity" vocals that mister McCarthy is already known for. Unfortunately for our ears, but fortunately for his career, Ethan knows when to shut up - and that's when the oppressing atmosphere finally sets in. No grandiloquent literary device needed other than that same adjective to describe the down-tuned guitar and bass: oppressing.

Don't let me bore you any further. Ignore that Facebook notification. The time you're taking to read any more words is time wasted if Vermin Womb's Permanence isn't playing in the background. Get it here, legally, and for free. Yes, sometimes good things happen to you.

Need to revisit this one, haven't played it in a while. But I did highly enjoy it when I did, it's a great, fun, violent release. And congrats on your front page spotlight, komrade!

On their bc page now, "looks" more like a grindcore album. I will give it a go regardless. Thanks for the review.

Thank you Che and Jay.

Jay, I didn't know you were into stuff like this. Like Che said, it's a short, fun and extreme release. Tell me what you think of it when you get around to listening to it.

[Party time]

I wouldn't want to divert the attention away from the album and towards myself, but I did execute a couple dance moves when I got the news.

Naturally I had to choose this for the first review. From a personal point of view, this is, so far, the best I've heard this year. If my new position can generate more views, then I'm happy .

Watch out for those painfully average albums that aren't bad or good. They're a bitch to write about. I like your approach so far though, quick, clean and direct, and your sentiment about not going overboard with metaphors is something that pleases me. This site becomes EssayStorm quite a fair bit in recent times.

Yeah, nothing is harder to describe than the mediocre and tolerable. Thank you, I could justify that by the limits of my English, but those adjectives could be applied to my personality as well. No need to travesty myself in order to convey an opinion. Moreover, if it fits what I am reviewing, it's all for the best. Which is the case here.

But I thought you liked creative reviews. Didn't you love the one Intro did for Kayo Dot? I have to say I was impressed with that one.

I have a suspicious most of the stuff you review will be balls-the-wall energetic stuff somehow so I doubt you'll have much trouble

Oh don't get me wrong, I do. That was a genuinely daring and creative review that did something different with the format, but I find most reviews I read tend to be verbose exercises in wannabe-poetry and often seem to be more about the review itself than about the music. A huge ton of my own reviews took that route so I feel like I can spot it when I see it. So yeah, I like reviews to be creative, be to the point or be especially good at knowing the music industry / genre etc, (like Jerry was for example) but I'm not a fan of those self-absorbed type of reviews =P

Spot on. It's not that I don't want to challenge myself either, of course, but it is what I like the most right now.

Oh then yes, we talked about that a couple of times before. I already knew you liked Jerry's reviews, which could get just as creative as they were packed with knowledge. Those were the ones I was referring to.
I did take arrogant tone/approach when I first started reviewing in French. I still feel embarrassed when I remember the pretentiousness and pedantry of which I made myself guilty. Weirdly, it bothers me much less in English. Although, I get frustrated if I have to get the dictionary three times per sentence, and a little belittled as well.

When are you going to start reviewing again?

Well your vocabulary is better than most native English speakers so I'd be surprised if you have much trouble. But even so, throwing lots of crazy words at something doesn't make it better really, as I learned. Just say what you want to say xD

As for me reviewing, probably not ever again. I don't ever get the urge to any more to be honest. I think unless someone paid me to do it which would be cool. Pretty unlikely though considering how many people out there want to be metal journos.

Aw, thanks, goes right to my heart and ego . I really thought that getting to talk with you about good reviews could revive that flame. Alas, we'll have to learn to live without them.

Heheh, if I thought I had something interesting to offer the review world I might consider it, but currently I don't think it's a great loss =P I'm quite happy with mini-reviews in lists at the moment I think.

I ship you two. Just saying.

That said, good review of a good EP. Definitely looking forward to a full-length by these guys, though if they kept it up Bolzer style that's fine with me.

Yesterday we discussed the possibility of marriage but we came to the conclusion it could only last four days to two months.

And yes. This really doesn't feel like a test-run EP, it's a coherent release adapted to its format. So if they choose to go on this way, I'm more than okay with it. But I'd be very curious to see how they pull off a full-length. I'm almost wondering if they're just too brutal for more than 30 minutes. Or maybe they'll adapt well to the long format and just blow my mind again.

Still longer than a Hollywood marriage.

Yeah, a band like Vermin Womb might not benefit from anything longer than 30 minutes, like most hardcore, but we'll see.
