Power metal - it's only very light on the prog and symphonic. "Century Black" was a very good song, the chorus is exactly what I want to hear in PM these days. Overall not bad.

After having listened a bit on youtube, not my thing.
Tell me I'm wrong, but I find it rather funny that these days US bands imitate European power and symphonic metal bands.

The synth blasting bit near the end of Truer Words Never Spoken is a bit crap, but otherwise I quite enjoy this, rather reminiscent of earlier Nightwish

I'd rather go listen to that instead.

I'd rather listen to this than early Nightwish

I'm starting to think only people that listened to late 90s, early 2000s Nightwish when those albums came out really appreciate those albums and understand their greatness and importance (yes, Therion did it before them, but these two bands more or less created a subgenre of metal).

I find personally that I have more respect and enjoyment in a band that perfects and refines a style than one that pioneers it. I'll always understand how groundbreaking Nightwish were, but I doubt I would've listened to them much even if I were alive when their debut came out, because I'm not satisfied with the songwriting, production, and at times the performance. To each their own, but I couldn't really see myself putting a band on an untouchable pedestal just because they were original.

Maybe you're right that I just wouldn't understand how it was when their debut came out, but I don't really see a problem with how I judge music. After all, I try to hold everything against a fair standard without any nostalgia-biases, but even then, it's all subjectivity. For example I enjoy the last two Nightwish releases.

That was a rant wasn't it...

You misunderstood and I need to express myself better, I did an edit in my post above.
What I meant was people that listened to the band back in the day (late 90s and early 2000s) appreciate those albums more and understand their importance. I could be wrong, but this is what I think.

My post was not a critique of how you (or anyone else) judges music, yes, it's all subjective. It's just me not understanding how later day Nightwish gets more love than the Tarja era albums. (On PA for example, the Nightwish ratings and reviews are in favour of the post Tarja albums.)

Ok thanks for clarifying I think I knew you weren't critiquing how I judge music, I'm just argumentative
