Melodic Death Metal, and especially the Gothenburg variety, has been relentless since Dark Tranquillity and In Flames impressed younger musicians all around the world with their mid-90s masterworks. The sound apparently impressed a lot in Spain and that brings us to the debut album of a Madrid band called Dawn of Tears. Actually, allow me to elaborate a bit. For those of you old enough to remember Finland’s Eternal Tears of Sorrow groundbreaking approach to bringing keyboards in a forceful manner into the style, Dawn of Tears are also doing that with huge success. I'm quite digging this one. There isn't really anything original about it, but it does a good job of blending quite a few genres in a cohesive and catchy way. The band is listed as melodic death metal which is definitely the base genre for the album but there's quite a bit of extreme power metal, neoclassical, folk, and symphonic elements smattered throughout. I actually like all of these genres but tend not to like cleans so this album's relative paucity of clean vocals suits me. It has a very Kalmah feel but I think it has more staying power for me than most Kalmah songs and is more consistent as an album than most of their output. My favorite tracks 1) Blaspheme Natured Messiah 7) Bleeding Away 9) Blood on Verona (MY FAVORITE TRACK BY FAR)
