When it comes to metal if there is one thing I appreciate it's when a band manages to not only fit their music to an idea or a point of focus but make it a bloody enjoyable listen in doing so. Everything from the exceptionally well executed oceanic theme of In Mourning's latest release to the album's title, which matches not only this theme but lets you know exactly what kind of experience you're in for, and displays a clear sense of direction and understanding for where the band want to take their sound.

Upon first listen, "Isle Of Solace" is my favourite song so far, along with "Convergence" and "From A Tidal Sleep". I really like the album and it's much better than I expected initially.

I also don't follow the general idea that this album is more "progressive" in nature, longer songs doesn't mean they are more proggy. I think they follow the same vein and mixture they had on their other previous releases.

For me an album needs to pick up enough within the first three spins or so if it's gonna go anywhere.

Same. I'm still not sure what to think of this album as of right now.. Maybe it's just because I'm harder into the gore and porn-grind than usual lately but, hopefully In Mourning prevails to entertain soon.. Because I have hopes for these guys I wouldn't want to see die.

I wouldn't say it's more 'progressive' either, if anything I'd say its less so. Seems to follow more of a straightforward, despite track length, melodic death pattern to me, especially in tracks like 'A Vow To Conquer The Ocean'. That is in comparison with the other album I've heard from them, Monolith. There is still much of this album you can describe as progressive of course.

This one is solid..has some really good moments but its too long and some times repetitive, a good album after all but a disappointment coming from In Mourning, imo their worst yet...

When an album is as devided quality wise as In Mourning's latest it easily gets tricky to rate.

The first half of it is really solid, with a refined and mature sound to the songs that felt like a step in the right direction for the band. But then the album suddenly takes a turn for the worst as the issues that mainly plagued Monolith start to present themselves. The second half of it is too repetative and bland, almost amateurish, which is such a shame. Overall the duration is too long and I would not have minded if the last two songs had been left out entirely.

All in all, The Weight Of Oceans is a clear improvement over Monolith but at the same time not as consistently good as Shrouded Divine. If the album had been trimmed down a bit the rating would be higher but as it stands, while taking all the songs into account, a 7 seems fair to me.

Thanks for the substantial post. I listened to the new album only once and it seemed terribly boring to me and I will listen to it again soon. My question is what you consider to be "the issues that mainly plagued Monolith?"

My question is what you consider to be "the issues that mainly plagued Monolith?"

It was mainly the repetitiveness of a lot of the songs as well as the complete lack of memorability overall. It simply felt uninspired and this feeling arose once again for me while listening to parts of the latest album.

As always with music, it's all a matter of taste but I don't agree with the "uninspired" argument as it is a very subjective word and depends on how each of us feels the music. Monolith felt pretty touching to me, very passionate and the clean vocals were always catchy and memorable as far as I'm concerned. In Mourning's debut is my favorite so far but I think this third release is their first real flaw. Boring to death except two or three tracks, but that's my point of view of course...

This is really boring. It just feels like nothing happens, this one song had been playing for 3 minutes before I noticed it was still playing. Whenever I listen to this my mind just drifts off and tries to forget about the music playing.

Well, definitely a huge disappointment, I had expected so much more. As so many comments before mine: bland. Especially the second half. Still, face on it is a very good album, just not a very good album compared with their previous ones.

A Vow To Conquer The Ocean is awesome people look at this:
The day the sun forgot to shine, the stars carved something out of the sky
A wooden gift to a haunted heart, for a distorted mind the tide will turn
in mourning is awesome and maybe best in 2012....i know Monolith and Shrouded Divine netter than this but it's still awesome...

The album has some decent songwriting in parts with emotive lyrics, but the melodies and song structures are way too tedious for my taste, and I find some songs to be boring tbh. I don't mind melancholic build ups if I know it's going to lead to something special, but for me the songs don't really build up to much, which leaves the album mostly unmemorable for me. The previous two albums weren't that bad so I expected more from this tbh.
