While 2018's biggest surprise comeback does not have too many surprises within itself, Hekatomb still hits harder than most black metal releases.

Got also my download yesterday due to my pre-order but I will have to wait till this night to check it out. I'll treat myself to a marathon starting with Devilry cuz I wanna judge this properly for a review.

It's a good Marduk album but not so much on Funeral Mist standards... I'm disappointed...

I'm a huge ROM 5:12 fan and consider it a "cousin" album to Funeral Mist since it's the Marduk album that sounds the most like Arioch's project... So maybe what you are saying isn't too bad for me haha.

One person. It's kind of silly to not listen to it due to that specially if you were interested. I actually haven't even heard it yet. I was just commenting on Koob's reply.

Have you actually heard Funeral Mist to begin with? Cuz people have to be kind of deaf if they never saw the similarities between Funeral Mist and ROM-era Marduk from the beginning. This is specially true if you compare the timeline in which Arioch aka Mortuus began singing for Marduk in 2004 with Plague Angel. You can clearly see Mortuus shaped Marduk to sound a bit like Funeral Mist. Sure, Funeral Mist's songwriting is much tighter, fresh, experimental and raw in its' production. but c'mon, the style has always been kind of similar.

With that said, I think you should check out Salvation if you haven't already although I'm getting the feeling this album would be more comaprable to Maranatha in terms of production.

You should still give it a try it's pretty damn good but just not on the level of the two previous ones (more straight forward black riffing hence the Marduk reference)

The Marduk comparison is quite accurate actually and not only to ROM 5:12. It does resemble ROM 5:12, which actually is my favorite Marduk album as well, but for example Naught But Death is basically The Blond Beast v2.
Then again, this resemblance is not necessarily a bad thing, the album is pretty good. I probably would have liked a bit more experimentation from Mortuus, but overall it is quite good.

Well after some time to think about it, I believe this is a very good album below the quality of Salvation or Devilry. I just wish the production wasn't as clean as it is.

Cockatrice is excellent.

This album is excellent. People argue that it sounds more like Marduk than Funeral Mist. Fine. This is the best album of Marduk by miles. It also shits all over Viktoria and Viktoria is not bad at all. This is ridiculously good stuff and bm aoty contender.

This honestly seemed like a pretty mediocre black metal album to me. If they'd been called Entombment Fog I wonder if people would have even cared about it had they heard it.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, the sharp, ferocious riffing and atmosphere is very good, but not sure I hear anything here that indicates to me why people were so excited by this announcement, so I should probably make sure to check out Salvation at some point

This album is a grower guys. It's one of the reasons it's taking me a bit long to write the review because I keep finding some extra bits I really really like. I still prefer the other two albums over it but the margin between them gets smaller by each spin.

Nowdays Salvation is considered a classic in modern Swedish black metal. On par with the best albums by Watain or Ondskapt. Strongly recommended and if you enjoyed this album I'm sure as hell you'll love Salvation. Do not diss Maranatha though! It's has quite its' own personality as well with very intriguing and unorthodox songwriting.

Its actually pitiful in my eyes that theres nowhere near the level of talk on those two albums compared to this as of now. Shame really, considering that maybe their age and status justified the lack of conversation however I'm unsure why they've had more treatment on this album when its less understandable.

Pack your bags every other Swedish BM band, this is over.
