Biography
Windmill is a young folk metal quartet from Gdańsk, Poland, established in the winter of 2016, active in its current lineup for a year and a half.
History, lore, music or any other aspect of folk culture has never been a strict path that we followed. We've never played traditional melodies, jigs, sang folk songs with lyrics dating back to centuries ago, nor played our folk instruments, them being the bouzouki, tin whistle and kantele, in the traditional style. Folklore has always been a kind of a loosely-woven net on which we laid upon, from which we got inspiration for the atmosphere of our songs, lyrical themes and more or less faithfully depicted archetypes, symbols and characters, not only from Slavic, but Indo-European folklore in general.
Our lyrics touch upon various subjects, we never focus on one specific topic or pattern. Because folk is not only the music, but a whole culture and lore we mention beasts, humans and gods alike. Our songs reference Slavs, Celts as well as universal messages, treating on the relationship between man and nature. There are no paths closed for us when it comes to lyric writing, we write about anything that piques our interests, is worth talking about or just fun. We secretly dream about a future concept album. We always have ideas, they sometimes arise during conversations, reading, in the sum of leaves, flames and air or even during parties, just before the dawn.
We aim to make everyone be able to find something unusual, personal, touching, something worth thinking about during the daily routine of life.
From the musical perspective, our debut album will be a result of three years of existence with the intention of playing pure folk metal, and pure folk metal it will represent, which doesn't mean it won't be able to suprise the listener with a trick up its sleeve, you'll have to find out yourselves.
One specific idea illuminates our future - to break folk metal stereotypes, as folk metal, just like alcohol, is a great base for mixing and experimenting, and that's exactly what we're gonna do.
We're friends within the band and outside of it, our minds work better together than seperate. We like making campfires and running around in the forests. Our interests and prospects our different, but we're all united under Windmill. Together we have 8 hands, and we use them all to their full potential to give you the best music. Energy and freedom in the form of fire revives us after any defeats to share the good message with all.
