Biography
Dark Covenant's second incarnation saw the light in the summer of 2009 by long time musical associates Yves "evillair" Allaire (Nordic Winter/Strigoï Mort/ Graven Dusk, Fjörd) and Christian "Woodenness" Verreault (Fjörd).
Yet the initial ideas of the music were sketched out back in 1993/early 94 under the name of Dawn of Sorrow. It was then that the two musicians initially put to paper and into recording, the first rough samples of their own version of classic Doom Metal inspired by such legends as Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Memento Mori, Sorcery, Mercy and of course Black Sabbath. But fate weaved a destiny other that the immediate realization of their musical project. It was only some 16 years later, after each followed his own musical path, that both artists reunited again under the proper forces of fate, and brought back to life their long time passion: Epic Doom Metal. In the fall of 2009, Christian's brother, Stephane "Somatologies" Verreault (Fjörd) joined the covenant on bass. Thus the band was re-named Dark Covenant, the pact was sealed.
Following the melodic path of classically inspired doom metal instead of the newest "death/funeral/minimalist" genre, Dark Covenant desired to build the foundation of their music upon ultra-heavy atmospheres laden with pounding percussions and bass lines. Yves' endless well of creativity resonates through his dirge-like hymns. Combining to perfection both melodic simplicity with technical prowess, yet thundering with powerful epic grandeur, he his able to conjure up from the depths of his soul the true essence of Traditional Doom-Metal. Keeping in balance contemporary originality and traditional legacy, for a result that is unique and familiar in the genre. Supporting Allaire's sound-wall of woe is Christian's thundering voice evoking from darkened realms unseen a sorrowful yet powerful accompaniment to the solemn manifestation.
The lyrical concept of Dark Covenant revolves around the classic doom metal themes of ancient mythologies, metaphysical and esoteric concepts, otherworldly realms, the dark periods of human history as well as anti-modernist views. Considering themselves more as artists rather than musicians, Dark Covenant takes very seriously every aspect of their music: from composition to song writing, recording and mastering to imagery and graphics. Everything must have its purpose and be in its proper place as all these comprise the soul of the entity that is Dark Covenant.
