Biography
The idea of forming In Peccatum had its source in the mind of Hélder Almeida, back in the year of 1997, who invited his longtime friends António Neves and André Gouveia to join his project. The band, who hail from Fajã de Baixo (Azores - Portugal) was then formed on January 1998 under the name Hades, but since another band existed with the same designation, they changed their name to Peccatum. The first line-up was António Neves on guitars and vocals, André Gouveia on bass and Hélder Almeida on the drums and in September 1998, they performed live for the first time at Coliseu Micaelense, on the occasion of the "Novas Ondas" musical contest. On the same year the band released their first demo tape, "In Beauty", (despite the bad sound quality and lack of musical identity), served the purpose of introducing the band to the national and regional underground. In 1999, Pedro Alvim (keyboards) was invited to join the band and his entrance helped on defining the band's own sound. These changes made the band change its name to In Peccatum and continued to promote the "In Beauty" demo tape, now under their new designation.
In the year 2000 they released their second demo tape "Just Like Tears", leaving behind the heavy/thrash influences present on the "In Beauty" demo and adopting a Gothic/doom sonority. In the same year they performed several live shows, including the memorable "Vila Fest" along with the Spanish act Dismal and "Morbid X Fest", with the heavyweights of the Azorean underground Morbid Death, Prophecy Of Death and God's Sin. In the following year they continued to promote and distribute the "Just Like Tears" demo tape and wrote new songs to feature in a new record. This was also the year that Pedro Alvim (keyboards) left the band.
2002 saw the release of "Antília", a concept EP which is lyrically and musically inspired on the Azorean myths of Sete Cidades. This record established In Peccatum as a reference on the Azorean metal underground. This EP was also distributed to radios, magazines and websites devoted to metal all over the world and obtained good reviews, with special reference to the German Walls Of Fire, where "Antilia" obtained the mark of 5 out of 5 stars for unsigned bands.
The following years were a bit hard for In Peccatum. Due to the private lives of some of the members, it was impossible for them to be 100% committed to the band; however, In Peccatum never stopped working or rehearsing, albeit less than expected. In 2005 they returned to the stage, performing on the first edition of the Roquefest - Azorean Heavy Metal Festival.
2006 marked a comeback year for the band. They performed live and with an unplugged set at a local radio show, played at the Festival de Ponta Delgada and Maratona de Rock. This was also the year that Bruno "Spell" Santos (ex-Sacred Tears) joined the band as the new keyboard player. In 2007, João Oliveira (Strapping Lucy) was introduced as the new In Peccatum drummer. The former drummer, Hélder Almeida, was also announced as the second guitarist of the band. With this line-up, the band have released another concept EP entitled "MDLXIII".
