Seventh Star was originally supposed to be a Tony Iommi solo album. Record company pressure forced Iommi to call it a Black Sabbath album, hence the official name of the band on this album being "Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi". The "featuring" part was dropped when they went on tour,
Black Sabbath has sold over 15 million records in the United States and over 70 million records worldwide.
Black Sabbath was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005, the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
The song "Fairies Wear Boots" was inspired from when Ozzy & Geezer were hassled by skinheads, thus an insult to the boot-wearing "fairy" skinheads.
There is a mysterious track on the album Sabotage which can be heard on US and UK vinyl versions of the album, at the end of 'The Writ'. The song lasts around 20 seconds, and it is a recording of Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward goofing around in the studio.
According to popular belief, the name for doom metal came from the song "Hand of Doom".
Black Sabbath formed in Aston, Birmingham, England in 1966 under the name Polka Tulk Blues Band (soon shortened to "Polka Tulk"), and later Earth, playing blues rock and hard rock.
In an industrial accident in Tony Iommi's youth caused him to lose the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his right hand - which, being left-handed, he used to fret the strings of a guitar. The irony here was that it was the last day he was going to work in the factory, as he was going to quit that day to concentrate entirely on his music.
Elton John is a huge fan of Black Sabbath, and once said it is the only hard rock group he likes.
Supposedly the band spotted a marquee or poster for the film "Black Sabbath" at a cinema near where they rehearsed and were amused by the fact that people would pay to be scared by a movie. So when they discovered another band was using the name "Earth", they decided to change their name to "Black Sabbath" because it fit their music.
Keyboarder Adam Wakeman is the son of the legendary former Yes (and former Black Sabbath) keyboarder Rick Wakeman.
