Deicide - Trivia
The audio at the beginning of Deicide's 2013 album "In The Minds Of Evil" is a line spoken by Michael Caine in the 2008 film "The Dark Knight". His line was "Some men just want to watch the world burn".
In the early 1990s, Deicide was on tour in Europe with Gorefest, a Dutch death metal band. In Stockholm, during Gorefest set, a bomb was discovered on-stage. It exploded in the club in which they were playing. The bomb was located to the rear of the stage, behind a heavy fire proof door. The explosion was big enough to deform the door and blow it off its hinges. Deicide managed to play three songs before the police decided to stop the concert and evacuate the club.
Deicide has been banned from playing in several venues (such as Valparaiso, Chile over a promotional poster featuring Jesus Christ with a bullet hole in his forehead) and with various festivals such as Hellfest, after several graves had been spray-painted with "When Satan Rules His World", which is a song from Deicide's 1995 album Once Upon the Cross. More recently, their music video for "Homage for Satan", which features blood-splattered zombies on a rampaging mission to capture a priest, was banned from UK music TV channel Scuzz.
During an interview with NME Magazine, Glen Benton shot and killed a squirrel with a pellet gun to prevent any further damage to his electrical system in the attic at the location the interview was held. Often taken out of context, this act garnered negative attention from critics and some animal rights activists.
Ostensibly in order to prove his genuine Satanic nature, Benton claimed in the early 1990s that he would commit suicide at the age of 33. However, he passed that age in 2000 and did not commit suicide. In 2006, he stated that these statements had been "asinine remarks" and that "only cowards and losers" choose to kill themselves.
In January 2007, drummer Steve Asheim was detained for police questioning in Austria after presenting money to a bank teller that was covered in red ink. Staff and police were suspicious of his appearance and suspected he had been involved in a recent bank robbery. After hours of questioning, it was discovered that a red pen had leaked in his pocket, staining the money. Innsbruck police were forced to release Asheim without charges.
Something not many people know about the group is that they're hated by many bands. While touring in Sweden during the 90's, the Swedish Black Circle (bands like Dissection, Abruptum and so on) sent threatening letters to the band, claiming that they will bomb one of their shows and kill them for making the ''poser'' music they do.
To show how much Glen despises Christianity, he has heated up a metallic cross and embeded it into his forehead. After a good 7 times embeding a hot-as-hell inverted cross, his skin has scared into the shape of the cross. He did it in the young days of Deicide out of boredom.
The band was originally called Amon and recorded two demos under this name, which were later released on CD as ''Amon: Feasting the Beast''. They changed the name to Deicide in 1990 shortly before the release of their debut full-length, at the insistence of their label Roadrunner Records because King Diamond had a song called "'Amon' Belongs to 'Them'", on his album "Conspiracy". |
